When everything feels strange and different

origin: Old English

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"You don't think hyung has another motive for sending us on this assignment as a unit, do you?" Jaemin asked.

"Not really... What makes you think that way?" Jeno questioned, unsure as to why Jaemin felt this way.

"I don't know. There...There was just something about him that made me feel like as if there was another reason behind him sending us there." Jaemin voiced out his thoughts.

"Thank god you feel that way too. I thought I was the only one." Renjun added on as he entered Jeno's bedroom.

"What took you so long?' Jeno grumbled as he snatched one of the three packets of potato chips that Renjun threw on Jeno's bed.

"Met Mark hyung on the way up here." The room became silent as Renjun took a seat on a chair near the bed .

"How is he? I heard he had a real bad injury from his previous assignment." Jeno inquired, trying to prevent the flame from dying out amongst them.

"Well, I mean he seems to be doing good physically, I guess?" It sounded more like a question as the words tumbled out of Renjun's mouth. He sounded really uncertain about himself too.

The silence in the room felt so sticky. It was as like spending a long day out under the scorching sun and the dry perspiration was had finally begun to stick to your body. You could not help but want to get rid of it  with a nice, cool shower.

In other words, it was uncomfortable.

It was not long before the scoffing of someone cleared the unpleasant lingering smell of sweat in the air and on the body

"Look at how pathetic we have become." Jaemin scoffed before he continued.

"We used to be inseparable and now we barely even acknowledge each other's existence! For goodness sake, we should have been the first ones to check up on Mark and yet, we hardly even knew until Renjun had accidentally eavesdropped on Haechan and Johnny's conversation the other day! Is this how bad our friendship has become? Is this how the brotherhood that we swore to live by is going to end? Forgive me for being dramatic a tad too much but, this is exactly how our lives are going to end up being if we all keep up this cold act of ours! "

His sudden outburst preaching nothing but the truth was definitely eye-opening yet unrealistic because all of them knew for a fact that being the bigger person was unquestionably not in their nature.

"You know, sometimes I wonder whether Jisung is right in his place..." Jaemin trailed off as he continued speaking.

"Jaemin... You know she had nothing to do with all of this. If anything, all of us are the ones to blame in this case. We could have all attempted to amend things but we never did. If we aren't on speaking terms, it's all because of the lack of our effort from our sides." Renjun clarified, standing up for the one name that had always lingered at the back of his mind.

"Technically, she did play a part in our fall out. Maybe time played its own aspect into this whole bewitching game but, if it weren't for her, things could potentially have been different."

"Jaemin..." Renjun warned him.

Whatever Jaemin was about to say, he knew neither Jeno nor he would be able to  bear the weight of it on their hearts because deep down,  as much as they hated to admit it, they probably would do the same.

"If we ever do meet her again, I know I won't be on her side."

"I have already packed the necessary files into this bag. Instructions have been given to the team at the base over there. They will be telling you more about this assignment once you reach there. If you need anything, you know who to contact." Taeyong reminded them in his office before they departed for their next mission.

"And please, for the love of good, make sure you guys don't bite each other's heads off." The underlying desperation in his voice was rather evident as the unit took in his request. His desperation sounded like as if he already knew the outcome of this unfinished assignment.

Then, why was he sending them?

"Well, you'll just have to wait till pigs can fly. After all, when has this job been anything but good?" Haechan remarked, winking at Taeyong.

His playful demeanour eased the mood significantly as even Taeyong's stiff shoulders seemed to have relaxed visibly.

Maybe, things could go right.

The boys made their way out of the room and headed towards the living room to get their bags before leaving for the private airport that they shared with a few other gangs.

"I am Hendery and I will be showing you around the base. If you have any questions or queries, you can ask me along the way. So, let's get started if we are going to make it on time for dinner."

The seven of them had landed and made their way to the new base in the new and foreign county.

Well, for most of them, it was a foreign country.

Mark, on the other hand, had lived here for quite a long time before moving to South Korea after things went downhill here. He was deeply grateful that Taeyong had taken him in that night and given him a home to live in.

That was one of the several reasons why he respected him so much.

To say that the journey here was uneventful would be an understatement.

The moment they had boarded the flight, Chenle had tripped over air and spilled his coffee on the back of Haechan's shirt. The sudden feeling of warm coffee seeping into his shirt and trickling down his back had caused Haechan to frantically jump up and bump into Jaemin who was right in front of him. Since Jaemin never was a very stable guy to begin with, it was only a while before the rest of them in front of him came falling down on each other like a Domino effect.

All the while, Jisung who had been right behind Chenle was completely fine, standing in one piece and definitely utterly surprised at the horror that had ensued right in front of his eyes.

Before he could help it, he burst out laughing at the mess of the boys in front of him. Tears streamed down his face as he nearly choked on air while bellowing his laughter. He just could not help it.

This used to happen so often before they fought that it felt oddly comforting to see that things had never really changed. That was how one contagious laughter resulted in six pigs grunting in pain and seven cackling souls.

After that, it was only minuscule period of time before the seven had begun pouring their hearts out on the private jet and almost patching up that once big hole in their hearts.

From then on, it felt like as if nothing had happened between them but alas!

Only as if nothing had happened.

"I'll let you guys freshen up now. Dinner will be set up in the dining hall in about twenty minutes. So, feel free to come down after that. You can meet the other members based here and maybe get to know some of them since you guys might be here for some time. At least, that's what Taeyong told me." Hendery made his way out of the living room as the guys made their way up towards the lift.

They had already been shown their room and their luggage had been taken up for them when they had arrived.

All the necessary rooms like the combat room, the gym, the safe room etc had all been shown to them in the tour.

"We'll see each other here in thirty minutes. Is that good with everyone?" Mark asked. Everyone just nodded their heads as they entered their rooms for the time being.

~~~~~~~~~~
After everyone was feeling more refreshed, they met up at the lobby area on the floor to go down to the dining room.
The dining room was pretty large, nearly the same size of the one back at home except it was empty. There were barely seven bodies there. Despite that, the ruckus created by them was so deafening that one would think that a war was taking place here. The hustle and bustle of the eight of them was enough for the seven of them to feel comfortable in this new unfamiliar environment.
"Guys, settle down already. Jesus, you all make so much noise." One responsible guys screamed over the remaining six voices, overpowering them. He grumbled a few more words before taking a seat too.
Though the smile on his face said otherwise.
"Aah. You guys are here already. Take a seat anywhere you would like." Hendery exclaimed as he spotted the seven of them standing unsurely at the entrance of the dining hall, standing up in the process too.
Once the seven of them had sat down comfortably, Hendery began to introduce the members on the table.
"That's Yangyang, Xiaojun, Noah, Jackson, Yohan and Jihoon." He directed the names to their respective faces in the process of doing so, allowing the guys to remember their both their names and faces.
Hendery then pointed out the members of 'Dream' to the six of them letting them greet each other formally as well.
"So, how old are you guys?" Jaemin started off by asking. The conversation then flew smoothly from there onwards as the fourteen men got to know each other better.
~~~~~~~~~~

Near the end of dinner, Hendery nearly jumped up from his seat, startling everyone in the process.

"Aish! I forgot to tell you guys that we have another member who is not here right now."

"Her assignment should have ended by yesterday but due to an unexpected situation, she will most probably be joining us by this week."

Upon hearing a female pronoun being used, some of the members of Dream began to cough while the other stopped eating.

"Oh, um...Did I say something wrong?" Confusion was written all over Hendery's face as was concern as he looked at the unit, baffled at their reactions.

"Oh no. Definitely not." Mark rushed to cover up the unexpected behaviour of the unit.

"It's just been we haven't met or worked with a female member till now." Jisung, who had been silent till now, spoke up, earning a few glares in his direction.

It certainly was not the truth but, it certainly was not a lie either.

"If you're worried about getting along with her, there's no reason for that. She's honestly pretty chill and her sense of humour is pretty remarkable but, don't tell her that. Her ego will fly out of the window.And, she's really loud." Jihoon, the one who had asked them to settle down previously and also the oldest as discovered through their introductions, reassured them as he smiled warmly at them.

"Mhmm... You guys will definitely get along with her really well." Noah added on as munched on his fried chicken.

At this, 'Dream' felt more comforted at the fact that this girl had a rather loud personality. It gave them the reassurance that it definitely was not whom they were expecting it to be.

Truth be told, they never knew whatever happened to her after she left them two years ago. Honestly, all of them were looking forward to meeting this last member. They just hoped that history would not repeat itself again and again.
