Day Four in Hawaii
•••••

Your last two days in Hawaii have been great. On your second day here you guys explored the cities and shops on the beach. You got a little bobble head luau dancer for Penelope, and Spencer got a book about Polynesian culture. You got yourself a beautiful shell necklace that you've been wearing ever since you bought it. After exploring you two went swimming again, except this time you didn't force him to get in the water with you. You mostly relaxed in the sand with him.

On the second day you two took a tour of the old volcanoes. You kept your distance from the active ones like Kilauea and Maunaloa, but you had a lot of fun taking pictures and learning more about the non active ones like Kohala and Hualalai. Spencer had a great time and now has a small bag filled with rocks from the volcanoes he plans to take home.

"Obviously we have extrusive igneous rocks in Virginia, but not like these." He said as he collected them. "If I were to add enough heat and pressure I could turn these rocks directly into magma. That's pretty incredible right?"

After asking him how he planned on doing that, he brushed off the question and continued to pick up the rocks. You smiled and took pictures of him, wanting to capture how happy he looked. Once you guys were done there you went out to lunch at a restaurant on the beach. The food was delicious.

You just woke up, and today you and Spencer plan on staying in. Tonight you guys are going to a real Luau and you can't wait.

"What are you most excited for about the Luau?" Asks Spencer. You guys are sitting on the patio drinking smoothies that he picked up for you.

"The hula and the food." You say. "And the fire twirling, that will be an interesting thing to see up close."

"I agree. You know in ancient times Luaus were held to celebrate victory in battle, a bountiful harvest, and significant life events." He says. He finished his book while you two were at the beach and hasn't been able to stop spitting out facts. You don't mind it though.

"That's interesting. What's the reason for the one we're going to?" You ask.

"It's the September Equinox." He says. "They're having a celebration to say goodbye to the summer and to welcome the upcoming colder months."

"It doesn't really get cold here though, does it?"

"No. The average high in September here can be up to ninety degrees with lows of seventy five." He says.

"You should be a weatherman." You say. "You would look really hot in a suit."

"I don't know about being on television though, that's a little too much pressure."

"You have to go on television at work sometimes, it won't be any different. Except you won't be saving peoples lives you'll just be that guy that people will see walking down the street and say 'Hey, isn't that the guy from tv?'"

He chuckles at your joke and takes a sip of his smoothie. You admire how good he looks right now. He's wearing a colorful button down floral shirt, but the first few buttons are loose to show his chest. The ends of his hair have gotten lighter in the sun and although he doesn't like to admit it his skin has gotten a little more tan.

"Do you know how handsome you are?" You ask. He looks up and smiles shyly. "I'm serious, you're so attractive it drives me crazy."

He smiles and looks down at his lap shyly. "Thank you." He says. "Have you ever heard of the word kalopsia?"

"No, but I'm intrigued to learn about it."

"It's an Ancient Greek word deriving from the words kalos that means good, beautiful, or lovely and ópsis which means viewing. The word is used to describe the delusion of seeing things as more beautiful than they really are."

You set your smoothie on the table and look at him confused.

"Some people think it's a weakness or danger, which can be true. I've seen it with my own eyes. When you love something so much it can make you do crazy things."

"Do you think I have kalopsia?" You ask.

"Yes. But not in the naive or weak sense, you still have caution and common sense but your kalopsia is primarily focused on things you're passionate about. Like serial killers, they're terrible people but you have your favorites."

"Well that's stretching it, I find the psychology interesting not the actual people."

He smiles. "You know what I mean. Not only that, but me. If I were to tell any random person the things I've done or been through they would think I'm a terrible person."

"But that's because they don't know you. My love for you isn't blind, I love you because you're the most amazing person I've ever known."

"Thank you. But all I'm doing is pointing out one of my favorite things about you, not trying to bring myself down." He says. You smile and take another sip of your smoothie.

"Thanks lover boy. But that doesn't mean I'm changing my mind about how attractive you are, seriously everything about you is perfect."

He smiles but you can tell he doesn't believe you. It makes you angry somehow, so you keep looking at him until you catch his attention.

"What?" He asks.

"You still don't believe me!" You say.

"It's not that I don't believe you, but I just don't get what's so..." He pauses and looks down to his lap and brushes his hands down his body. "so enticing. I look like a pipe cleaner with eyes." He says. He laughs and it makes you smile.

"Exhibit A, your smile. Your teeth are so white and perfect and every time you flash them I can't help but smile back." You say. He looks down and keeps a coy grin. "And your hair. Oh my god, I love your hair. It's so soft and curly and the color is mesmerizing."

He keeps looking down but takes little glances up at you and notices you admiring his facial features. For a second your eyes lock until he looks down again. "You have such deep eyes too. I could stare at your hazel irises all day. Your lips are full, but not too full which makes for amazing kisses. Your nose is slender and cute, and your cheekbones are contoured to perfection. And your jawline could cut diamonds."

He finally looks up at you again. "I get the picture, thank you for humoring me." He says smiling.

"Wait, I'm not done!" You say. He looks over and you continue to gaze at his features. "Your skin tone is this olive shade, but not a dark olive. It's enough so you're not pale though. And you're so tall. Your long legs drive me crazy." You say. You show a mischievous grin that makes him laugh. "But do you want to know one of my most favorite features of yours?"

He raises his eyebrows and looks at you curiously.

"Your hands." You say. You gaze at them as they sit on the table. "They're always so soft and warm. Your fingers are the perfect length too, so it's comfortable when they're wrapped in mine. And the way your veins show on the back of them is super hot. My favorite thing in the world is when you hold my hand and rub your thumb on the back of it."

He looks down at his hands and studies them for a second.

"Ok, now I'm done." You say. "That's my full critique on you, final rating is ten out of ten absolutely no flaws."

He smiles and looks back up at you. "Thank you, that means a lot."

"Of course lover boy. I love talking about you, it's one of my favorite conversation topics."

He laughs and checks his watch.

"Ok, it's 6:30 which means we should be leaving soon." He says. "Do you want to get changed?"

You're look down at your outfit. You're wearing a tighter day dress that falls below your knees. It's a reddish orange color with thin straps, and you're wearing a flower barrette to match. On your neck dangles the shell necklace you got at the little shop.

"No, I think I'll keep this on." You say.

"Good." He says. "I think you look gorgeous."

You smile and stand up with him. He grabs your empty smoothie cup and and throws them away in the trash can next to the table. You walk inside with him and wait in the kitchen while he changes his clothes. As you scroll through Instagram, Cecilia calls you.

"Hey!" You answer.

"Hey, what are you doing? Skydiving or something?" She asks. You laugh.

"No, me and Spencer are getting ready to go to a Luau." You say.

"Sounds fun, what else have you done today?"

"Nothing really, we've just been hanging out at the airbnb all day. I'm excited to get out of the house though." You say.

"That's good." She says. "I um- I'm actually calling because I need to ask Spencer something."

Hmm... that's strange. Since when does Cecilia ever need to ask Spencer anything?

"Ok..." You say. "Any particular reason you called me instead?"

"I tried to call him but he didn't pick up." She says. "The question is kind of important so I figured I'd call you."

"What's the question?" You ask. You're starting to get a little weirder out.

"Something for Emily." Is all she says.

"But wouldn't you call Penelope or JJ for something like that?" You ask.

"Penelope isn't picking up either, and I barely know JJ. So Spencer is the next best thing." She says. You're a little hesitant to believe her, but you let it go for now.

"Ok. He's changing right now but I'll give the phone to him when he's done."

"Great, thanks." She says. She's silent which isn't like her. Usually she'd be asking you about other parts of your trip, or she would start talking about some movie or tv show she watched. You want to start conversation but Spencer soon walks into the room. He's wearing a light blue button down tucked into a pair of beige slacks. A strange ensemble, but he makes it look good.

"Ok, here he is." You say. You walk over to Spencer and hand him the phone. He looks confused as he grabs it from you.

"Hello?" He says. Once he hears Cecilia's voice on the other end his expression changes completely. He quickly walks back into the bedroom leaving you in the kitchen again.

What is going on?

About five minutes later Spencer comes out of the bedroom with your phone in hand. He smiles at you.

"What was that about?" You ask.

"She had a question relating to Emily." He says. He's not making eye contact and he took a breath before talking.

He's lying right now.

You stare at him intensely until he looks back over to you. He swallows and his Adam's apple bobs in his throat.

"What?" He asks.

"That wasn't about Emily." You say. "Cecilia would have told me what she was going to ask if it was about her." You keep your eyes locked on Spencer's in efforts to intimidate him. He knows what you're doing and tries his hardest to keep his stance.

"Fine, she was asking about an early Christmas present." He says. This time he maintains eye contact and speaks genuinely. You try to look for other signs he might be lying but you don't see any. One of the perks of dating a profiler is that he teaches you some things, but not the full extent.

"She was calling about a Christmas present in September?" You ask. He nods confidently and you stare at him a little longer. Eventually you give up and start towards the door. Spencer walks behind you and you two head towards the Uber he ordered. You step in the back seat with him and look out the window.

Why would Cecilia need to talk to Spencer? It could be about a Christmas present, but that seems kind of off. The way Spencer walked into the other room was weird. But maybe that was because he didn't want you to hear anything about what she's getting you. He doesn't have a reason to lie, does he? You realize that there's nothing he would hide from you. You're just overthinking things.

"Hey, you ok?" He asks. He grabs your hand and gives it a small squeeze. You look over and gaze into his eyes. You smile and squeeze his hand back.

"Yeah, I'm good." You say. You look back out the window, but you soon feel Spencer's hand grab yours. He starts rubbing his thumb on the back of your palm, and you suddenly feel so much better.
