one week later - march 13, 2020

"alright, mrs. fairmont, i'm gonna send some nurses in to get you all drugged up before you go into surgery," i tell the elderly woman, a soft smile on my face.

"thank you, dr. dené," she tells me, a grin present on her lips.

i nod at her without another word. i turn on my heel and make my way out of the room.

i groan to myself as i see sylvia making quick steps toward me. "don't tell me its gsw girl again."

"no actually," she says with a laugh, shaking her head slightly. "its her brother - he's in with heart palpitations and chest pain."

"of course," i sigh deeply, shoving my hand through my dark hair roughly. "wheres he at?"

"ER room six," she says shortly with a nod, laying the chart in my hand before scurrying off to other patients and doctors.

"we meet again, miss o'connell," i say playfully as i walk into the small room. I put my stethoscope in my ears and press the other end to the man's chest, listening closely to his heartbeat.

"i told her it was just anxiety but she insisted i come in," finneas says softly with a roll of his eyes.

"it could be a serious problem, dumbass." billie flicks her older brother's forehead, an amused smile crossing her plump lips.

"i just think you enjoy coming to see dr. dené." finneas lets out a loud laugh, his eyes squeezing shut as billie slaps his arm. "ow! that hurt, billie."

"shut the fuck up, finneas - no one asked your opinion." she says angrily, her crystal eyes rolling before she slams herself back into the chair.

"alright, on that note," i start, giving billie a look. "i'm gonna send your primary care physician an email and tell them to look at prescribing you something for the anxiety - your heart sounds fine, but i'm gonna get an ultrasound team ready."

"thank you," finneas says with a smile, his eyes sparkling.

"any time - if the chest pains get any worse, come back in and we can do some more expensive stuff for you." i tap on his arm with his chart before looking over at billie. "and you, miss o'connell, better not make his life any harder - i don't want to see either of you in here for at least two weeks, unless absolutely necessary."

"yes, ma'am," billie says with a slight smirk.

with that, i make my way out of the small room. i stop at the nurses station and scribble things down on the boy's chart, my lip caught between my teeth. i hand the chart to one of the nurses before making my way to the on-call room.

"wait!" i hear a familiar voice call, and i turn around to see none other than billie.

"yes, miss o'connell?" i ask, a sigh leaving my lips as i cross my arms over my chest.

"you look really young to be so smart at this medical shit," she says, her tongue darting out to wet her lips. "how old are you, anyway?"

"i'm twenty-three," i look at the girl as i gnaw on my chapped bottom lip. "and you need to be getting home - its three in the morning and i'll bet you have things to do in the morning."

the girl is kind of getting on my nerves. she's too young to be in here all the time. it makes me wonder of she's just here to get drugs.

"you're right," she says and looks around the mostly empty hallway. "where are you going right now?"

"i'm on my way to take an hour nap?" i say in a question, shrugging my white coat off of my shoulders.

"cool, well-" she gets cut off by the loud ringing of her phone. "i have to take this."
