malignant fibrous histiocytoma*                                                                                                                               a malignant fibrous histiocytoma is a type of cancer that's most often found in soft tissue such as muscles and tendons. in very rare cases it starts in bones. when this happens, its most often in the leg bones. cancer cells start to take over and destroy the bone.

two weeks later - march 27, 2020                                                                                                                          day five

"alright, mr. sullivan, you're gonna be okay," i tell the older man, a slight smile on my face as i look at him. "right now, we're just running a few more tests and then we can get you out of here."

his greying hair falls into his face as he lets out a slight chuckle. "take all the time you need, gwendolyn; its not like i can get up and walk away." he says, motioning to his amputated legs.

i let out a soft laugh at his words and pat his shoulder, his cloudy brown eyes staring up at me as i do so. "depending on the test results, i can see you doing cartwheels in remission in the near future."

we exchange goodbyes and i make my way into the service elevator, shoving my hand through my dark hair in frustration.

i need a vacation.

when the elevator doors open, i'm met with busy bodies running around in the cafeteria with trays in their hands.

"gwen, you're finally on lunch!" an older RN says with a laugh, her smokers lungs wheezing as she does so. "its about damn time you get down here."

"i know it, mary," i say with a sigh, walking up to the counter beside her. i pay for my meal and sit down at a table, watching as she picks up her burger and practically devours it. "holt shit, dude, slow down - you're gonna choke."

"we're so busy in the ER, gwendolyn, i need to get back up there." she says as she brushes her long strawberry blonde hair out of her face. "besides, my patients are funny as hell."

i smile at her words and nod, mumbling a soft, "i understand that - my malignant fibrous histiocytoma* patient made a joke about getting up and walking out."

she lets out a loud cackle, her eyes squeezing shut as her head leans back just slightly. "its jerry sullivan, isn't it?"

i nod slightly and raise my eyebrows at her, stabbing a cherry tomato with the plastic fork and bringing it to my mouth.

"i was there when he was first diagnosed," she says, wiping her eyes of the tears caused by laughing so hard.

"don't laugh so hard, mary, you might make an aneurysm burst," i joke in a dull tone, shoving a bite of cabbage into my mouth.

"screw you," she says with a hum, scratching her nose with her middle finger. "i'm going for a smoke and then i'm gonna get back to my patients - i'll see you later."

i finish eating my chicken salad before throwing the garbage away and making my way back to my patients. on the way, i see sylvia speed walking toward me with a worried look painted across her face.

"whats up, sylv?" i ask her, my eyebrows furrowing as i look at the older woman.

"your favorite patient is here," she says breathlessly, her eyes wide as she looks down at the chart. "EMT's have her thumb on ice right now."

"what?"
