In November 1948 the Presley's moved to the town that would become synonymous with Elvis. Although they struggled financially, the shift to a larger conurbation brought relief from the hard times they suffered in Mississippi.

Elvis began performing at class functions in tupelo, a practice he continued at his new school in Memphis.

Elvis's shyness prevented him from making friends easily and made advances towards girls impossible. Performing to Elvis was a way to overcome those impediments.

Elvis was also more comfortable around women due to his close relationship with his mother. Music won the attention of the girls in his school and neighbourhood.

Although many of Elvis's fellow students regarded him odd, the girls he befriended found him very different from the other teenage boys. His listening skills and demeanor caused others to feel like he truly cared about their feelings and opinions.

Elvis seemed to possess an aching vulnerability, making him both intriguing and sympathetic - a living example of the archetypal character james dean portrayed in the film A rebel without a cause.
