'Elvis had an active fantasy life. Sometimes I think he wanted to present this image of the ultragood Elvis, and sometimes he wanted to present the image of the Badass Elvis.

Towards the end of '70, he started dressing like a gangster. He'd wear black shirts, and white ties, and he had a black suede suit, and his hair was longer than it had ever been in his life, with these big, bushy sideburns.

He looked like a cross between an Italian gangster and a supercop. Sometimes he even wore a wide-brimmed hat.
