AN Brace position, is all I'm going to say...

As I entered the roofless carriage, an overwhelming sense of dread filled me from head to toe. I looked beside me to Elinora, who gave me a reassuring smile as the cart bounded out of the palace gates and towards the masses of people that awaited us.

Less than two weeks ago, Elinora had enthusiastically informed me that a royal parade would be held in Cornwall to celebrate the implementation of the free-emigration policy, and that I should be beside her 'as her Consort.'

Really, once she said those words, I would have followed her to hell and back without complaint.

The people waved their hats and handkerchiefs at our passing carriage in a show of respect. Elinora's smile seemed genuine, as she waved back. I tried to plaster on a look of happiness, but the sense of impending doom coupled with the few banners displaying 'No Policy. No Prince.' made it all the more difficult.

A whistling sound rang through the air, and before my mind registered it as an incoming arrow, I had already pushed Elinora down in her seat and covered her body with mine.

The searing pain came a moment later. It must have begun at my shoulder but it spread like a fire burning through bushland. I vaguely heard Elinora yelling, and I wanted so desperately to soothe her but before my eyes could focus on those amber orbs, they blinked and the world went out.
