Damien

It wasn't before the clock struck 8 in the evening that a chill ran down my spine. I looked at the clock worriedly and pressed call on my phone.

Tristan's smiling face popped up as his contact photo. Please pick up baby, I chanted in my mind but all I got was the call operator informing me that his number was currently unavailable.

Again. For the twentieth time.

I hadn't had any contact with him since morning. I had tried calling him multiple times only to hear the same monotonous message of his number being unavailable. I had even tried his office cell but nobody had picked up.

I didn't think too much of it at first. It was very possible that he was in a meeting. But now I was slowly starting to freak out.

This wasn't like Tristan at all. Even if he had a meeting he would most definitely text me. He knew how worried I became if he was late.

I decided to call up his friend Marly. Thankfully I had her number. I had asked Tristan for it in case I needed to contact her if I couldn't get through to him.

Marly picked up immediately.

"Hello?"

" Hello Marly. This is Damien speaking. I am Tristan's friend and room mate."

"Oh hey Damien! I know who you are dude. What's up?"

I grimaced at the word 'dude'. I most certainly wasn't her dude. "I just wanted to know if Tristan is still at work. Or if you know why his cell was unavailable all day."

There was utter silence on her end. My heart started beating faster and faster till sweat covered my forehead and palms.

She spoke after a while in a tentative voice,"Tristan did not come to work today Damien. He is at home. Shouldn't you know that?"

My entire world came crashing down all at once. The phone clattered and fell to the floor as I sat down heavily on the couch. My head was spinning and nausea crept up my throat.

Tristan never went to his office. But he wasn't here either.

And that could only mean one terrible thing.

He was in danger.

I was currently sitting at the police station with Marly. She was trying to get me to calm down but in vain. All I could think about was the fact that Tristan was missing and I was almost sure that he had been abducted.

The police were of course hesitant to believe my claims about Alexander and his obsession. I could feel them tense the moment his name escaped my mouth. It was clear that they knew Alexander and who he was very well.

After almost half an hour of me screaming and pleading with them, they had decided to start investigating. But they were quick to inform me that they were going to start with an impartial view and not focus on just Alexander. After all it was highly probable that Tristan went away on his own.

My blood boiled at their words. They did not know Tristan. I did. He would never go away on his own like this. But it was useless to try and argue with an entire department of policemen who were very obviously nervous about involving Alexander.

I was thankful for Marly. She had been a source of strength and comfort since the moment we realised that something was amiss. She had been the one to call his parents to inform them. I simply couldn't do it.

As I sat in the stuffy room in the police station, I felt completely and utterly helpless. It was an alien feeling for me. I was so used to solving other people's problems and saving them. I had always been in control of every situation whether in the hospital or in my personal life.

But this time I felt lost. I had no idea where Tristan could be. After all, I was just a common citizen. I did not have the power and money that Alexander possessed. How was I supposed to fight an enemy this strong?
