3 AM

That was the time it was when we had stopped at the  gas station and while  pumped the case I offered to get the snacks. It was a quiet ride and peaceful, no forced conversation no uncomfortable silence. It had all felt natural. The bright eyes of the store made the snack isles look like heaven. I eagerly grabbed a bag of chips and a gummy worms along with 2 Coke's. The line was short and in less than a minute, I was in the front.

" Hey." I greeted.

The woman nodded in acknowledgment and began ringing it up. I handed her my American Express Black Card. My eyes wandered over to Jasper. His thick hair blowing with the breeze one and one hand tucked in his pocket as he pumped the gas. His green eyes widen when they landed on me surprised that I was staring.

He waved.

Damn it he's so cute.

" It's declined." The cashier said

" It's what?" My eyes nearly fell out of my head when she said those words.

" It's declined." She repeated blandly looking annoyed.

A light snicker could be heard from behind me, and a small line began to form.

" It can't be run it again." I demanded

She did it once again a loud obnoxious noise coming out of the machine.

" Declined." She said smacking on her gum. Embarrassment creeped over me, an impatient women stood behind me along with her teenage daughter who found the whole thing amusing.

" Fuck no." I cursed in disbelief. She slide the card back to me. " This is American Expression Black card Honey. It doesn't decline." With determination and frustration I slide the card back to her "Run it again"

She slide the card once more and off with that obvious sound. " Declined."

I really hate that word.

" You're machine is clearly broke. Where's your manger?"

"Look lady you're holding up the line." Said the man at the end of the line holding a bottle of beers.

" Oh can it! You and your beers can wait!" I shot back.

I was in disbelief. Utter fucking shock. This couldn't have been happening. Stuff like this didn't happen to me, but it was. I ran my hand through my hair in frustration and sighed in defeat.

" You could always just pay in cash you know." The women behind me said.

" Who the hell pays in cash anymore?" I pull out my wallet and found an old 20 dollar bill that I had probably used to blow my noes at one point of time.

" What's the total?"

" 12.50." The cashier said, her was voice monotone and her eyes held no life. Her costumer service sucks ass.

" 12.50!" I exclaimed " How the fuck is it 12.50?"

" Hurry up." The beer man complained.

" Oh fuck you." I shot back at him " Here." I handed her the bill with an unpleased expression on my face as I collected the recite in change.

" Thanks for shopping." She grumbled

I grab the bag and walked to the exits.

It was all clear now. He had cut me off. He was  planning on drying me out, cutting off my money sources so I would come back home. My annoyance wasn't something I could hide. Jasper clearly saw my agitation.

" Hey what's wrong?" He asked

Forcing a smile, I didn't want him to know how bothered I truly was.

"Nothing, they just didn't have sour gummy worms." I lie before getting into the car.

While Jasper pumps the gas I pull out my phone. It was less than 2 rings before he had picked up.

" Kinsley." His cold voice greeted.

" Dad."

It was silent he was waiting on me to speak just as I was waiting on him.

" Where are you?" He asked getting straight to the point.

I scoff.

" You know where I am. I'm sure you've tracked my phone by now. The question is not where I am it's where I'm  going."

" Come home Kinsley." He demanded coming straight to the point. " That Boy has nothing to offer you." He spat at the word boy as if it tasted like poverty and undervalue. With attempts to use it to belittle Jasper.

" I'm not looking for offers Dad. Not everything's a business deal you know." He didn't know. Because to him  thats what I was. A business deal and Jasper was getting in the way of it. In his mind dance was a hobby, Jasper was a phase and after High school my life was his. To him I was suppose to be grateful for the blueprint he had made for me. Grateful that my whole life had been planned out. It was unfortunate, all the fortunate I had couldn't repair all the damage that was done to me. All the money couldn't repair my family, it couldn't bring back my mother. But money, could hide secrets, couldn't undo what was done but money would make it seem like it never happen.

" You're my daughter Kinsley. I only want what's best for you."

I scoffed at his statement, looking over to see Jasper still pumping the gas.

" You're my Father, and I know you only want whats best for you." My voice was soft as I spoke, sadness creeping in as I thought of the broken Father- Daughter relationship we shared.

" Try again."  I blurted out.

" What-"

" Try to be a better Father." I added

" Kinsley I am-"

I cut him off once more, looking out the window at the dark sky. " Not with me. Where done. Where..." My voice trailed trying to find the right words.  " Where ruined Dad." The silence on the end was still, he didn't object. He couldn't. Where was the lie? I could hear his shallow breaths waiting to hear what more I had to say.

" Try to be a better Father to the son you don't even claim. Be better Father to the secret that killed my Mother."

He didn't get the last word.

Jasper smiled through the car window and I quickly hung up the phone not wanting him to see me in distress.

" Hey!" I greeted with a smile. A smile that Jasper genuinely brought out of me. He slide in the car in buckled his sit held.

" Hey."  He smiled "  You ready?"

" To meet your family?"  I shook my head " Not at all."

Jasper chuckled.

" You better get ready. My sisters can smell fear." And with that he started the car. I wasn't sure if he was joking, although he wore a charismatic. It did nothing to soothe the anxiety I felt or the butterflies in my stomach.

Oh God.
