Chapter Twelve

The next morning, I woke up to a message from Rachel telling me she had accepted my apology and acknowledged that she had made a mistake by making a big deal out of the situation. I was first relieved, but I soon realized Sharon hadn't replied. It was a message I had sent on the group chat that I set up a while back which involved just the three of us because I felt it was easier to communicate any message that applied to both of them.

"Why hasn't she replied to me yet? Has she chosen to disregard my message or is she still sleeping? Am I supposed to acknowledge Rachel's message and pretend like I didn't see her ignore my message? These were the concerns that were going through my head, and the more I thought about them, the more I became worried that our friendship was about to come to an end because  Sharon wasn't the kind to harbor grudges against people and will let you know when you offend her.

"Or maybe I should send a direct message to her but that would come across as being desperate. I mean she also owes me an apology for thinking I was being unfair to them by spending more time with Alex."

Thankfully, our class representative had stated that our today's class had been canceled on the department group chat yesterday evening. I won't have to deal with facing my friends about how I behaved with them yesterday. And I made the decision to give Sharon the entire day to respond to my message before assuming that she is purposefully ignoring me. By Monday, hopefully,  everything would be back to as it was.

I spent the entire day in my room, so it ended up being a long day. I had a  free day which would have been the ideal time to visit Sharon and Rachel's apartments, but I was unable to because of our strained relationship, which bothered me a lot. I had only gone downstairs to eat and would return to my room to study or take short breaks to watch an episode in the Korean series I was following.

Sister Vivian had left for work while Stephen had left for school. Aunty Joke had visited my room twice to check on me because she was concerned, and I had reassured her that everything was alright and that the only reason I was home was that my class for today had been canceled the day before. Also, Alex and I occasionally texted back and forth. I had decided to visit him the following day, which was Saturday if I could, because I couldn't bear to be miserable by myself.

It was 10 pm and I was relieved that the day was finally coming to an end. I was lying in bed on my bed texting Alex and was constantly checking if Sharon had texted back when I received a text from Sister Vivian's boyfriend.

"Hey Jane are you awake, I'd like to call you"

I quickly sat upright and replied surprised by his unusual message

"Yeah sure you can"

"Hello Jane," Andrew said as I picked up the call

"Hi Andrew, hope all is well"

"Yeah sure, all is well. How are you doing by the way"

"I'm very well thank you. And you?"

"I'm doing well too thank you. So I just want to make sure you are alone before I continue with this conversation" He said

"Yes, I'm alone" I replied hesitantly, unsure of where the conversation was going. "I was about to go to sleep when I got your text"

"Let me just keep an open mind," I thought to myself"

"Ohhh good. So, I called you about Vivian. I want to propose to her and I want to organize a nice surprise proposal for her. I suppose I'll need your assistance on that"

"Oh my God, yes, I'll be ready to help as much as I can" I replied, my face immediately lit up. I wanted to scream so bad because I was super excited but it was late at night and I knew it would be a bad idea to do that.

"Thank you so much, Jane, I appreciate"

"Anytime Andrew. You two are my favorite couple, it's no big deal. So, what do you have in mind, how do you want it to go?" I inquired

"Erhmm, Vivian and I have had conversations like this, and I know she'd like an indoor or a parlor proposal with just a few people she cares about"

"Okay, uhhm, I think, yes! I remember. Sister Vivian has an old friend who plans surprises like this. I can get her number from her phone and contact her. We can also select the people we would invite and pick a date too"

"That's perfect I like the idea of that. Please in anything you do, do not let her suspect anything. She's smart enough to know when something is off"

"Of course, I can do that"

"Okay, thank you so much, Jane. I appreciate your help. We'll have further discussion about it through WhatsApp text"

"Alright no problem"

"Have a good night's rest"

"And you too," I said cutting off the call while still grinning broadly.

Even though my day hadn't gone as I would hope and I had wished for it to end quickly, this phone call from my sister's boyfriend made up for the entire awful day.

The next day, I left my house to visit Alex after spending some time studying. While Sister Vivian went to an Owanbe event with Tomi and Aunty Joke had left that morning for her home in Ibadan to spend the weekend with her family, Stephen went to a friend's house that was throwing a birthday party.

Normally, weekends like this are my favorite because I get to spend time alone at home. However, today was different. Although I woke up feeling good about the conversation I had with Andrew last night, I was still a little disappointed that Sharon hadn't responded to my text as of yesterday.

I had called Alex before leaving the house and even though he was willing to visit me at my place, I had insisted on going over instead.

"So, I'm still not welcomed at your house?" Alex confronted me with this question the moment I stepped into his apartment

"Woahh not even a Hi babe or  I'm happy to see you or I missed you greeting"

"I see you are trying to avoid this conversation"

"I'm not trying to avoid the conversation and stop being cranky. It's annoying" I retorted already irritated.

"Okay, then answer my question. Why do you always give excuses each time I want to visit"

"It's not like that. This whole thing is new to me and I don't know how my siblings and Aunty Joke will react when I introduce you to them. I'm just trying to take my time you know?"

"You give off the impression that you are ashamed of me or worry that your family won't like me"

"No, no I promise they'll love you when they meet you" I clutched his hands trying to assure him.

"Okay, I trust you," he said with a smile. "I'm sorry I acted the way I did earlier" he added

"Yeah right," I quickly let go of his hands and went to sit on the bed pretending to be angry.

He proceeded to sit next to me, holding my hands and fondling my fingers.

"I'm sorry, you know what, just think of it as our first disagreement which won't be repeating itself in a long while," He teased

"Ohh, so you still believe we will argue more?" I asked folding my arms and attempting to look angry, but the smile that was already on my face persisted.

"People in relationships have normal disagreements. That is why I said in a long while" He answered leaning to kiss me

I gently pushed his face with my palm to avoid the kiss "I just felt it was insensitive of you to start an argument knowing I have a pending issue with my best friends"

"I'm sorry, it won't happen again" He apologized genuinely.

"I gave him a kiss and smiled" It's okay

"Ohh that reminds me, my sister's boyfriend is planning a surprise proposal for her" I added

"Wow, that's cool. I'm happy for them. So when is it then?" He asked

"We haven't picked a date yet, but maybe before or after our exams. You can come so that I can introduce you to her"

"I like that" He replied smiling.
