"Charlotte! Hey Charlotte!" Peter run down the corridor.

Charlotte finally turned around. "Oh, hi Peter."

"Um hey." He said, catching his breath.

"So what's up?" She asked him and she seemed mildly irritated.

"Well... I was thinking... Would you maybe like to..." He started saying. He felt his heart beating frantically in his chest. "Go out with me?"

"With you?" She asked quickly, a look of astonishment on her face. She quickly turned her surprised expression into a smile. "I'm sorry. I have to finish my application for the football internship thing."

"Oh." Was all Peter could say. After all, he hadn't given her a specific day or time... Was it an excuse because she didn't want to go out with him at all or did she think he meant today? "I'm sure you'll get in." He finally said.

"I'm not so sure. There are only 3 spots left after all. Did you apply?"

"Yes I did. Alex too. But why only 3 spots? I thought there were 4."

"There were." She said bitterly. "But they decided to give one to Olivia and she didn't even apply. I mean, can you believe that? Such favoritism."

"I didn't know that. I didn't even think she'd be interested. Alex will be glad."

"He will?" Charlotte asked eagerly.

"Um, yes." Peter said, realizing he shouldn't have said that. "He kinda... well he likes her."

"Oh he does?" She said and she sounded angry. "Well, what do you know? I personally don't see the appeal."

"I don't either." Peter was quick to say.

At that, Charlotte smiled at him. "Anyway, see you later Pete."

"Pete?" Peter muttered to himself. This had been a disaster. He turned around and walked back to the cafeteria where Alex was waiting for him.

"So, how did it go?" His best friend asked.

"It went great."

"Yeah? That's good." Alex said happily.

"Yeah it went great for you." Peter added.

"What do you mean?" Alex asked perplexed.

"It turns out, she likes you. But she turned me down very politely."

"Oh. I'm sorry man. I had no idea."

"And that's not all. Olivia is going to Rio."

"She is?" Alex asked excitedly. "But I thought they wouldn't decide who to take for another month."

"No they won't. For the other 3 spots at least. Apparently she got it and everyone else is waitlisted. Charlotte said she didn't even apply."

"She didn't? Well, it makes sense. She's the smartest one here."

"Of course you'd say that. You're in love with her."

"I'm not in love with her. I don't even know her well enough..."

"Whatever." Peter cut him. He was still bummed, about Charlotte and the internship.

"Did I tell you about Lydia's friend? That she wanted to introduce you to?" Alex said trying to cheer his friend up. Lydia was a poli-sci major Alex was casually seeing for the past month.

Peter sighed. Alex might have had a crush on Olivia but the fact that she wasn't interested didn't stop him from meeting girls and going out. He looked like an Abercrombie model after all. Why would Charlotte like Peter better when Alex was always there to be compared to and come up short?

It wasn't Alex's fault though, Peter knew that. "What friend?" He asked.

"Marissa, Marina? I don't remember the name. She goes here too. Do you want me to tell her to set it up?"

Peter thought about it for a second. "Sure." What did he have to lose?
