(y/n)'s POV

I started breathing heavily as my head felt like it was suddenly hit with a large pole. Memories of that night flooded my mind and brought tears to my eyes, but I held them in. I momentarily forgot about the person I'm with on a call. I can hear his faint voice asking if I was alright but I can't give a clear answer knowing that my voice will fail me and will surely shake upon speaking. I took deep breaths and rubbed my eyes to remove the tears brimming on them.

"I'm okay. I'll just call you later if I got time." Muttering it lowly, I raised my left hand to my temple and massaged it to ease the pain of a creeping headache.

"Alright, tell me if you need anything. I'll be there in a half flash of lightning." This brought a soft smile to my lips. He then after ended the call. I opened my phone to continue my investigation and to write them down.

A few moments later, I already finished the first three houses and was on my way to the fourth one when I heard rapid flapping of wings. My eyebrows creased in confusion and I started looking around for the source of the sound. I faced towards the sky only for a red and yellow figure to block my sight. It let out a high pitched caw and flew right in front of my face.

"Nix? What are you doing here?" I questioned the bird.

"Guarding up your clumsy ass." He scoffed and flew around me. Raising a brow at this, I shrugged it off and went on ahead.

"You're not getting out of my sight." He perched on my left shoulder and looked around.

"I know, I know. I just need to finish my job okay?" There's no response from him after that.

Reaching the fourth house, I slowly opened the wooden door and walked inside. Nothing odd and suspicious just like the rest of the houses I went in. After checking every room, I went out into the backyard and searched around.

"Hmm nothing here. Let's check the next one Nix." When I turned around to head to the last one, Nix suddenly flew off of my shoulder and when down to something and clawing on it.

"What are you doing?" I put my hands to my hips and tried to take a look at what he was doing from my current position. Since his backside was facing me and completely blocking the view, I heaved a sigh and went closer to him. I poked my head on the side of his figure and saw him clawing out at the soil.

"What? Do you need to take a dump or what?" I asked him but he still didn't respond. I went back, closed my eyes, and pinched the bridge of my nose in irritation.

"Seriously Nix, we shouldn't waste time. It's the last house, go take a dump after it so will you stop-..." Something hard suddenly hit the center of my forehead. Immediately rubbing the reddened surface, I peeked out one eye and met with Nix's bored ones while pointing something at my feet.

"What are you-?" I looked down and saw a blue shard, I think it's a shard, or maybe just a rock. I picked it up and turned it around and around to see every inch of it. Nix went back to my shoulder and tried to peck the stone but I quickly stopped him and move the strange thing away from him.

"It looks a lot suspicious since you know it's impossible for this shiny thing to be owned by these people especially when you see their home, besides they told me earlier that all of their stuff are made of woods and stones. This kinda looks like a stone but it isn't. That's a hint." I wrote it on my phone and pocketed the shiny object.

"Let's take a closer look later, let's finish the last house first." I went to the front of the house and noticed something different. When you look at it from afar, it looks the same as the others but when you take a closer look at it, there is a number of different features. Like how the planks look completely new and newly placed, how some colors are slightly lighter or darker than the rest which should all be identical, and how you can visibly see signs of past destruction.

I hummed in thought and went in. Like the outside, the interior is also different. Some furniture are wrongly placed and what looked to be signs of fire can be seen. It seems that this house was destroyed with fire and later on was fixed.

I checked every room and like I said before, they are also different. I took note of every new detail from every corner. Ending the tour inside, I made it out to the backyard. Thinking that it was just the same brown and littered soil, I was shocked to find that there was a large crater and a trail. Like something hit the ground and skidded to somewhere far off. Looking beyond the crater, plants are burned and small pieces of the blue shard that I found were visible everywhere.

"What the-..."

"Watch the language." I blankly stared at him. He rolled his eyes and flew to the center of the crater. Trotting around, he pecked some pieces with his beak and grabbed a few with his claws. I followed him to the crater and smudged my fingers to the soil, inspecting it when I pulled my hand closer to my face.

"This is weird, there's no report from the people in town about this. They should've told us." My eyes followed the trail and it led to the forest as the trees on the way of it are bent down or sideways and are scorched from the impact.

"Nix, I think we have to investigate further."
