6 Years Later

"Okay, Trina, it's time to go, you can't be late on your first day of school." June handed her a pink princess backpack and showed her the pack of crayons, the pencil case with 2 sharpened princess pencils, and her princess lunch bag.

"Oh, Garrett, I just can't believe it's time! I never thought this day would really come." She leaned into Garrett and held on for just a moment and then straightened and shook it off. "I'm okay, I'm okay, I promised myself I was not going to cry, I mean it's not like this is the first time in history a child got ready for school."

"You know, Junebug, Trina will love first grade. Her friend Shelly will be there, and it is just 6 hours until you will see her again. She will be just fine." He had such a soft voice and was so strong and comforting. And that smile...it could melt an Amazon warrior.

June let out a big sigh, "Oh, I know all that, I'm not worried, but, geesh, 6 hours, that's a long time for such a little person. I am so glad I had arranged to meet up with Connie, I just don't think I could stand this day all by myself. Thanks for saying you will pick her up later, we might be stuck in traffic, and I would hate for Trina to have to wait for me."

"Okay, Trina, come on, give daddy a hug and a kiss, and let's go get in the car."

Garrett swooped her up and lifted her high, and pretended to drop her, catching her at the last moment before she hit the ground. Trina let out a wonderful laugh, and then gave him a big peck on the cheek, and squeezed his neck.

"Daddy, make sure mommy doesn't worry about me, I will be fine, I can't wait to color and paint and learn to read and write."

"Well, honey, you know you might not learn everything today, it takes a long time to learn things, but I am sure you will have fun. And, yes, I will make sure mommy doesn't worry about you." He winked at her, she giggled, and ran to the car.

"Junie, she is just like you, so independent and ready to take on the world." Another wink, at her this time, and she almost giggled herself.

The Mirage Spa

Connie was an entrepreneur, she started her own women's gym with 10 members and it had grown into an empire, which allowed her to frequent the Spa three times a week, as well as any other luxury or recreational activities she liked. She had so many people working for her, that she only stopped in at the headquarters once or twice each week. She also stopped in at various gym locations to make an appearance. Even though she had people who took care of the maintenance at each location, she still liked to take a look at things herself. After all, it was her name on the sign.

While she had all sorts of time on her hands, it wasn't too often anymore that June and Connie were able to get together. They had been friends since college, where Connie Franklin was majoring in Business Management, and June Lincoln was majoring in Liberal Arts with hopes of being a teacher. Connie had actually introduced June to Garrett, as he was also on the fast track in Business Management. Connie and Garrett had dated a couple of times, decided it wasn't going to work, but stayed friends.

One night when June and Connie were hanging out at a local bar that was close to the university, Garrett approached them, and asked about Connie's friend. June and Garrett hit it off, and got married just after Garrett graduated. Garrett was offered a job right away, which meant moving away from the university, and June made the decision to end her college career and be a supportive housewife.

"Jeez, Junie, ten years! What are guys going to do for your anniversary?" Connie was laying on the massage table being worked on by the very capable Ramone, her regular masseuse.

"Well...I think we are going to do a cruise, like maybe to Alaska. I think Garrett has it all figured out and he is being super secretive about it, but I found a couple of brochures in the drawer in his desk."

"In his desk, huh?" Connie laughed. "I didn't think you were the sneaky type."

June felt her face redden and was glad that no one could see it, since all she could see was the highly polished floor below the massage table. "I was dusting his desk and his drawer was open enough to see a brochure inside."

"Uh, huh, sure," Connie was grinning, "hey, you don't have to explain yourself, I would have done the same thing."

"Maybe that's why you're still single." This was something they often teased each other about, June had always so badly wanted to be married, that she couldn't understand how Connie could be happy without having a man in her life.

"Hey, I choose to be single, don't you listen to her, Ramone, I enjoy my freedom, and not having to check in with someone all the time."

"I don't always have to check in, it's just nice that he thinks about me throughout the day, and he likes to be able to get a hold of me." June felt herself getting defensive. She couldn't understand how the light conversation had just pushed her off a little bit. "Anyway, you wouldn't believe how cute Trina was this morning getting ready for school. We did some last minute shopping for school supplies, and of course she wanted everything princess. Which is fitting, since she is our little princess and she knows it." She smiled, seeing Trina swinging with her dad as they were getting ready to leave.

"I bet. I hope you took some pictures, I can't wait to see her and hear about school."

"Are you kidding? I think I took about fifty pictures of her just coming down the stairs, getting her shoes on, holding her backpack. I guess it's a good thing it's a digital camera, I probably went a little overboard." But it couldn't be helped, she thought, that is the last time she will have her first day of first grade. She sighed as the knots were being worked out of her tense muscles.

2:20 PM

"Hi Buggie, I'm here and I am waiting in the infinite line of parents waiting for their kids to spill out at any moment." June was so happy to hear from him at the school, it just broke her heart a little that she was stuck on the freeway trying to get back home, and not waiting to see Trina bounding out of her classroom.

"Oh, thank goodness, will you stay on the phone until she gets in the car so I can talk to her?" She had a wonderful day at the spa, she felt great, her skin felt nice and tight, and her muscles relaxed, but thoughts of Trina at school flooded back to her as soon as she got in her car.

"Okay, I think I see her...yup, here she comes, looking about as happy as a frog in a fly factory." June grinned at the thought, and the picture of that happy frog.

"Dadddyy! I had the best day, Shelly was in a different class, but I got to play with her at recess. They have a huge slide and monkey bars and me and Shelly raced on the monkey bars, and I won, I always win." She was talking a mile a minute and smiling twice as wide.

"Okay, sweetie, slow down," he was smiling right back at her. "Your mom's on the phone and she wants you to tell her all about your day."

"Hi mom, we had recess, and they have a big slide and monkey bars and I won on the monkey bars, I always win when I race with Shelly."

"Oh Trina, that's great! What did you talk about in your class today?"

"Well, first my teacher, her name is Ms. Deedle something, it's hard to say, so she told us to call her Ms. D. She had us tell our names and write them on the board, that's the chalkboard, we all got to go in front of the class and write our names. It was a lot of names, because there are twenty six kids in our class, but not Shelly, she is in another class."

June couldn't stop smiling as she listened to her daughter ramble on about every detail of her day. She was so overjoyed with the excitement bubbling off of Trina, she couldn't wait to get home to gather her up and hear everything all over again.
