I stepped through the front door, struggling to hold all three of the grocery bags in one arm while I tried to remove my keys from the door. I opened my mouth to call out for Dustin, but quickly stopped myself as I realized that Eli might be sleeping. I shut the door quietly with my foot and shuffled to the kitchen to dump the grocery bags onto the counter. Then I made my way upstairs to Eli's bedroom. I moved quietly, afraid that if Eli was sleeping then my footsteps would wake him up and that was the last thing that I wanted. Eli was up all last night with a cough and I knew he needed as much sleep as he could get today. I stopped outside the door when I heard Dustin singing softly. I smiled, leaning against the doorframe and listened. Dustin's singing was interrupted by Eli's cough. Before I could walk into the room, I heard Dustin, "It's okay, buddy. You're okay." Eli coughed one more time before he settled down and Dustin started singing again. I stepped into the room to see Dustin in the rocking chair, cradling Eli in his arms. My husband smiled up at me and continued to rock back and forth. I smoothed Eli's hair away from his forehead as he coughed again.

"How's he doing?"

Dustin looked up at me, "He's okay. Got a little bit of sleep, but he has been coughing quite a bit." As he said it, Eli went into a longer coughing fit than the previous ones. Dustin lifted him up a little bit and rubbed his back. Eli stopped coughing, so Dustin resumed his rocking once again.

I smiled down at him, "I'm gonna go make dinner. Are you two gonna be okay?"

Dustin nodded, "Of course." I leaned down and kissed Dustin's cheek before smoothing back Eli's hair again. As I left the room, I heard Dustin singing again.
