Getting to tour with a famous singer? Amazing. Getting to tour with your favorite singer? Even better. With complete clarity I can remember the day that Kip Moore asked me to join him on tour as his banjo player. It had felt so surreal at the time, like I was dreaming. When I found out he was touring with Miranda Lambert and Brothers Osborne I was elated. Getting to spend a couple of months with my four favorite people in country music was a dream come true. We had a show that night and I had been exploring the venue with Kip, but he got pulled away for some press stuff, so I was alone. TJ had found me lounging in one of the seats in front of the stage. We had been hanging out a lot, playing music together and just talking. It was nice to have found a friend in him. Unfortunately it seemed to bother Kip for some reason. "Nel, do you wanna jam a little before sound check?"
I looked up at TJ, "Hell yeah." He grabbed my hand and pulled me up from the chair. I followed him backstage and grabbed my banjo before settling down next to TJ. We started playing, just goofing off for a while.
Time must have gotten away from us because suddenly Kip had walked up, "Hey, TJ, they're looking for you for sound check."
TJ nodded and stood, "Thanks, man." He turned to me, "See ya later, Nel."
I waved him off and turned my attention to Kip, "Hey."
"Hey."
"How was your press thing?"
He shoved his hands into his pockets and looked away from me, "Fine. Just fine."
I got to my feet, "Is there some kind of problem?"
His eyes met mine, "What would make you say that?" I turned away from him and placed my banjo back in it's case.
"You've just been acting kind of ridiculous lately. Especially where TJ is concerned." I pursed my lips and waited for his response. When he didn't say anything, I turned to face him. He was staring at me, looking like he was holding something back. I raised an eyebrow.
He sighed, "I don't have a problem with TJ."
I scoffed, "You have a problem with someone. So if it's not TJ then it must be me."
He scoffed back, "I don't have a problem!"
"Yes you do! So just tell me!"
He threw his hands up, "Maybe I'm jealous! Okay?"
I shook my head, "No. Being jealous means-"
Kip shook his head, "Oh, don't grammar police me right now."
"No! Being jealous means that you fear someone will take something that you have." I pointed a finger at him, "You don't have me, Kip!"
"Damn! Fine! I'm envious then."
I shook my head, "Envy means you want something that someone else has." Kip rolled his eyes. "TJ doesn't have me either." He stared at me and I continued, "Neither of you have me." It was silent between us for a minute. I could faintly hear the sound check that was happening up on stage.
Kip took a step closer to me, "And what would you say if I told you that I wanted you?"
I stood completely still, "I'd say you were crazy."
He moved closer, pressing his forehead against mine, "I must be insane then." Before I could even think of a response his lips were on mine.
