I took a deep breath before knocking softly on Chris's apartment door. I waited for a minute, my stomach twisting into a thousand knots as I did. Finally Chris opened the door. He grinned at me, but promptly frowned when he saw the expression on my face. He ushered me into his place, "Jo? Baby, what's wrong?" I stayed silent as I walked past him, into his apartment. I took a look around and remembered the first time I had ever come here. Chris had invited me over, so he could cook me dinner, but he ended up burning it. We ordered pizza and sat together, laughing, all night. It had been one of the best dates I'd ever had, but I couldn't think about that now. I wasn't here to reminisce and I wasn't here for another pizza date. I was here to say goodbye. I felt Chris's arms wrap around my waist and it took all I had to pull away. He frowned, "What's the matter with you?"

I shook my head, deciding to just jump right in, "This isn't working anymore. I think we should-"

Chris cut me off, shaking his head, "No. Don't say it." I sighed and shut my mouth. Chris continued to shake his head, "Just...just let me hold you." He moved closer, "We can fix this. Whatever it is, we can fix it. Please just tell me what the problem is." He hesitantly put his hands on my shoulders, "I promise we can fix it. I can fix it. Just tell me." Tears started to run down my cheeks and I pushed Chris's hands off my shoulders. He stood, staring at me.

My voice cracked, "It's just that...everything is just too hard. I feel like I never see you and our lives get in the way of each other. I can't do it anymore." I moved towards the door, but Chris's hand wrapping around my wrist stopped me.

"I know it's hard, but you don't quit just because it is. What we have is real." A sob passed my lips and I heard Chris take a shaky breath, "What we have is too good for goodbye. Jo, please don't leave." He pulled me gently so that I faced him, "Stay." I turned away from him, facing the door once again. I pulled my wrist gently from his grip, shaking my head, and took slow steps to the door. Chris sighed as I pulled open the front door. I hesitated before throwing the door shut and turning on my feet. I ran the short distance that had separated Chris and I and threw myself into his arms. He caught me easily and sank to his knees, holding me close to him. I sobbed into his shoulder and he squeezed me tighter. I pulled back and looked up at Chris, tears still pouring from my eyes. He gave me a watery smile and pressed his lips to mine.
