The sky was painted with different colors, it would truly be a beautiful site if it weren't for the destruction in the world.

The virus immediately wiped out two-fourths of the population in California with the numbers rising.

There was a group she was traveling with until the virus infected them all except for one other person besides her. She woke up to growls and groans outside of her door, which was locked with a chair in front of the wedged between the door handle and floor. She was smart and observant; she knew not to trust anything or anyone nor to get comfortable for too long, as it would be her downfall.

She could hear Coca yelling her name from the room two doors down from the one she was in. "Skye WE GOTTA GET OUTTA HERE OR ELSE WERE TRAPPED!" Coca yelled from the other room. Skye responded by yelling back " I KNOW WE HAVE TO WARD EM OFF WITH SOMETHING OR GET OUT THROUGH ONE OF THE WINDOWS!"

Skye made a mental note of where everything was in the house when the group was going through the house.

There was a sharp snap and Skye could feel the blood drain from her face from fear, she sharply turned from where it sounded and even from where she stood she could see the chair wasn't going to hold for much longer. She paused for a minute looking for anything in the room that she could push to the door. There in the corner of the room was a vanity, she rushed over and started pushing it to cover the door. Grunting when she hit her head on the wall when the vanity tipped toward her sweat dripping from her forehead from the weight.

She could hear Coca from the other room grunting from the thudding most likely hitting something and all of the sudden silence besides the growing groans from the zombies.

Then she could hear the slight sound of glass shattering and Coca yelled " Skye I GOT THE WINDOW I'LL LEAD THEM AWAY!". She could hear her yelling at the zombies "COME ON YOU DEAD BRAINLESS CREATURES!". Coca is smart Skye knew this but that didn't help the feeling of worry in her stomach go away.

So when she heard the growls and the stomping leave the house she grabbed her duffle bag full of supplies and pushed the vanity out of the way. She didn't know whether Coca would be able to come back around with the group chasing her.

They only had hunting knives and a machete they found in one of the houses the group raided. They needed more weapons and a spot to hunker down for a while as the weather was getting colder and they didn't have much clothes.

Skye could feel the cold breeze gnaw at her skin through the ripped black jeans that were being held up by a belt she found in the house they were staying in. The black wife beater doing nothing to help with the chilliness of the air even though she was wearing a flannel it did nothing to help keep warm.

That's when she could hear it.

She could hear dozens of groans and growls above the howling wind. She froze for a second before her mind went racing into possibilities. ' Did Coca outrun them?' 'Did she get away?'

She was snapped out of her thoughts when the herd grew closer in proximity than they were before. She had no time. Whether Coca was alive or not if she abandoned her or if she was... She couldn't stay there much longer.

So she ran.

She ran as fast as she could, the air whipping through her short dyed hair with her duffle bag hitting her side with a thump every time she moved.

She could feel the burn in her legs as she ran through the streets taking various turns to outrun the herd.

Skye knew the feeling all too well. She ran these streets all her life. Running from her problems.

But she knew she couldn't, she had a reason not to.

Because it'd be a waste if she lasted this long and ended up dying.

She also needed to know whether they were all okay and if they were safe. She didn't care about how long or how she was going to get to all of them but she knew she had to.

Squinting her eyes to see better in the dark with only the street lights illuminating the outline of the streets and everything that was in front of her.

There was some type of building she could see she was approaching but she didn't see it clearly until she was in front of the building. Panting and huffing from running so much almost falling to the ground when her knees buckled. Her hand that was scarred but somehow still soft grabbed the wall and hoisted herself up and tried prying the door open only to realize the door was locked.

She cursed her luck and started running around the building trying to find a way in while also being careful of her surroundings.

But like everyone she has blindspots and because of that she didn't see the zombie running at her from behind.

The zombie grabbed her and the bony fingers dug into her flannel with the overwhelming stench of rotting flesh reaching her nose making her gag.
She turned around and the zombie she saw made her almost want to throw up her canned food she ate earlier.

The zombie's face was melting like someone poured acid on its face with the skin an almost paper white color with lifeless dull gray eyes. The once blue hoodie was now a disgustingly dark navy blue one with red splotches all over it with holes and twigs in it. It was wearing shorts which exposed the red ring of teeth marks on the ankle.

She gasped and pulled her hunting knife out of its spot in her belt and stabbed the zombie in the head before running.

She found a small opening in the building and squeezed her body through and fell to the ground in a heaving mess. Skye could feel the sweat dripping down her body and onto the ground. The strain in her muscles was too much so she sat down on the cold cement and ran her hands through her hair wincing when she realized how matted her hair was and pulled her hand down.

' I'm just gonna sit for a few minutes.' Skye thought as her dark brown eyes drooped with exhaustion.
