Shruti requested Atharva in hushed voice, “I wanted to spend some time with you.” He smirked, “Teri neeyat toh theek hai na?” She glared at him and was about to hit him, when she realised about her surroundings and said, “Arey, how will I give you that surprise if we don’t meet up alone?” He nodded, “Chill.. I was anyways not going to let you go just like that. Let me seek our elders’ permission.”

To be continued….

Atharva and Shruti walked towards their parents, who were standing together. They were generally discussing about today’s function when Atharva interrupted saying, “If you don’t mind I would like to take Shruti for a drive right now. Will drop her home in sometime.” Both the set of parents gave their consent. However, Shruti was heavily decked up, so her mother suggested her to give her the jewellery, considering it to be risky roaming around at such a late hour like that. There was no one left at the venue except the Vermas, the Shahs, the Parmars and the Bhatts. So she didn’t hesitate, removed the jewellery in the room and handed it over to her mom.

The affianced couple left after promising not to be very late. Atharva was very chivalrous on that day, holding her hand till the time their car was brought in by the valet and taking care to see that she was comfortably settled. There was hardly any traffic at that hour in the night and within no time, they were on the highway.

There was a happy glow on their faces which was unmistakable. Shruti silently prayed to God not to let any hindrances come in their way. She realised that they were on the same route where Atharva had taken her when they had met for the second time. It seemed ages ago… they had come a long way since then. She had a broad smile on her face thinking about the new chapter unfolding in her life… something she hadn’t dreamed about 3 months back. She thanked God every single day for fulfilling all the dreams she had ever seen about how her beloved should be. The added bonus of having the parents consent made it all the more acceptable, which was one of the reasons she didn’t dare to think of having any relationship in all these years. She shook her head grinning at the thought how she used to pity herself for not being romantically involved with some dashing guy, always dreaming of having a whirlwind romance.

The Dreamgirl in her was satisfied with the thought that even though their’s was an arranged marriage, it fulfilled every criteria of a sensational romantic story…. Love at first sight, the turmoil caused due to the uncertainty about their relationship, his unflinching decision of not backing out and refusing to even consider anyone else, the heart wrenching pain that Shruti felt when matters went awry,  their second meet when he didn’t hesitate to show his admiration, his coming to Nashik just to convince her about his affection towards her, both their families giving mutual consent, that feeling of contentment, their first call after the families agreed to their relationship, she giving him the best surprise ever by coming to Mumbai, singing a song from him, their unforgettable Gud dhana, holding hands for the first time during Ring-a-ring-a-roses, she asking to hold hands during their drive, their first hug, their first magical kiss, shopping together for the engagement outfits, him taking her side when bua taunted her about not saying ‘aap’, the meet with his friends, their passionate kiss, he calling umpteenth number of times to check on her while traveling by train, the support that she gave him when under work pressure, and finally their D-Day…. Wooowwww!!! She couldn’t have asked for more.

She was so engrossed in thinking that she didn’t hear him at first. When he repeated her name again, she heard Atharva calling out, “Hello Dreamgirl. A chocolate for your thoughts?” And she realised that he was offering her a bar of dairy milk. She smiled at him, and made him have a bite while holding it in her hand before relishing it herself. He observed, “You are unusually quiet today.” She shook her head replying, “No… actually was thinking what a beautiful journey we have had so far. Thanks for everything Atharva. I couldn’t have asked for anything more.” He too was feeling all mushy inside and said lovingly, “I sincerely hope to keep you happy Shruti. I am not good with words, but hope you are able to feel the way I revere you. Don’t know how will I sustain without you for another 9 months.” They held hands, enjoying touching each other after so many days.

Shruti remembered about something and abruptly asked, “Do you think Minishbhai is romantically involved with someone?” Atharva was taken aback at the unexpected question and responded, “What made you ask that?” She shrugged and said, “Call it an instinct… today when the guests were coming on stage to congratulate us, remember the 2 girls who came up along with his gang?” Atharva mused and replied, “Aah yes… they are his friends Shruti… nothing more.” She tried to justify, “ Atharva… Minishbhai specifically introduced me only to them. For a fleeting second, I thought something was fishy.” He chuckled, “You have read too many love stories madam and it’s all gone into your head. Minish is a very straight forward guy and I doubt he is having an affair.” She didn’t budge and simply responded, “Will see.”

Atharva said, “I loved our ceremony today. Everything was picture perfect, hai na?” She beamed, “Oh yes! All thanks to you… I was taken by surprise to see everything was so well coordinated and provided a romantic backdrop. The cake was scrumptious too… loved the A n S on top.” He nodded, glad that she liked it.

They had general talk for a while when both unwillingly realised that it was getting very late. He was already driving towards the Parmars’ Residence, when he mentioned, “I am waiting for my surprise.” She looked at him diffidently, and said, “Atharva… I am an emotional person. When I was a teenager, I always wished to have love marriage like my parents had. Besides, mostly all cousins also had love marriage too. Was quite a dream girl even then. So when I went on my first international trip with mama, mami and my cousin, I fell in love with something while I was wandering in the markets of Seoul, South Korea. For some reason, I never gave it to anybody. I must have been fifteen at that time. Since then, I had thought of presenting it to the person with whom I fall in love. So it’s more of a sentimental thing than anything else.”

Atharva kept listening to her and glancing at her while she was speaking. He had always known that she was a very sentimental person, but what she said completely stumped him. They had just reached the parking lot, when Shruti opened her handbag, and took out the polythene. While carefully removing it, she again said nervously, “Don’t have very high expectations.... Okay? It’s a very simple thing,” and handed it over to him. He switched on the car lights and took the envelope.

He read on the envelope, To My Sweetheart, and at the right side corner at the bottom, With Loads Of Luv, Shruti. When he turned the envelope, she had written on the flap, ‘Open with ❤️.’ He smiled when he read that, and eagerly opened the envelope. In it, was a simple but charming card. The base of the card had musical notes and in one corner, it was written Happiness Always in English and Korean language. In the centre, a dainty pink rose flower with a long stem and leaves was stuck. She looked at his face, trying to read his reaction, but was too nervous to judge. He had gone completely silent, delicately touching the card and opening it. He kept reading the words over and over again.

My Dear Sweetheart Atharva💕,

Happy Engagement!
Shall always remember this Beautiful Day….

Luv:
Shruti (Shah)💕

Atharva was choked with tears, stupefied by the extent of her love. Shruti at last said, “Hope you liked it Atharva.” He said in a hoarse voice, “I don’t know what to say Shruti. It really touched my heart. I am humbled to know that you  feel that all the dreams that you had seen as a teenager have been fulfilled. You are an extremely emotional person Shruti… to have treasured something for so many years and giving it me today… it’s priceless.”

Shruti was on the verge of tears herself and thanked him for understanding and valuing her gift. Atharva thanked her in the most natural way that he knew and took her in his embrace, although a bit awkwardly since they were sitting on the front seat. He self consciously switched off the car lights and gave her the sweetest kiss ever possible. It was a delightful treat, brimming more with love than passion. Although they were sitting in the car in the parking lot, he couldn’t help himself give in to the desires that both had been aching for long. It was his way of thanking her and she couldn’t have been more pleased about it.
