Candy Bolus

The Next Morning

After my first night home since being diagnosed I have come to two conclusions, number one, highs suck ass. About 10 o’clock I became increasingly thirsty, hot and irritable…a sure sign that my sugar had spiked and even with a correction bolus I had to drink what seemed like 10 gallons of water to morph back to human. I’m starting to understand Nick’s spontaneous f-bombs. My second conclusion is that I have absolutely no idea what I think or feel about the whole Matt/Josh situation so I’ve decided to go to the source. Waiting until I heard the click of the door behind Nick, I snatched my phone and sent a text to Matt. ‘Meet me in the cemetery after school.’ I sighed and ran my fingers through my hair as I waited. Moments later I received his reply and quickly sent a text to Morgan setting up my alibi. ‘I'm at your house after school.’ She responded quickly with a ‘Roger,Roger’ letting me know she understood.

Tossing my phone onto the couch I flipped through the TV stations twice before switching off the TV with a sigh and picked up my notebook to start on my massive pile of makeup work, my motivation lasted about two hours before the doorbell sounded. Tossing my book to the coffee table, I pushed myself from the couch and walked to the front door throwing it open to reveal Cat and smiled. "Shouldn’t you be at work?"

"I wanted to see how you were feeling and I come bearing gifts." She said holding up a bag of candy. "How are you doing?" she asked before throwing her arms around me in a hug.

"I'm hanging in there.” I said pulling from the hug and turning to walk into the kitchen, Cat directly in tow.
"Nick's says you are taking your diagnosis very well." Cat said as she followed me into kitchen and watched as I pricked my finger to test. "But he's worried, as am I, that you are taking it a little TOO well."

Sighing loudly, I waited for my meter to countdown before looking up at her. "I am fine. I've been dealing with diabetes in the family as long as I can remember. I've always been Nick's diabetes buddy."

"It's different when you're the one having diabetes and not watching from the sideline." Cat said as I took a glance at my meter. 62 . Not surprising I had started to drop into the pits of lows after flying high all night long. It wasn't the best number to be seeing, unless of course I was wanting to consume a couple pieces of candy, in which case...it was a perfect number. Score one for me!  Cee 1 - Diabetes 0. “I know it seems kinda horrible bringing you candy but if there was one giant misconception I had about diabetes it was that you aren’t allowed sugar. Nick told me you can have just about anything in moderation and as long as you bolus to cover the carbs so I thought I’d bring you a little treat and I took the liberty of including a little nutritional value cheat sheet with the carb count of the candies.” Smiling I glanced at the candy cheat sheet before making my selection from the bag and popping a candy into my mouth.

"Everyone is treating me like I'm made of glass and I might break at any moment. I'm glad you're concerned but I'm fine." I said popping a few more pieces of candy into my mouth. Hmmm . . . the aroma of sugar made me smile as it melted in my mouth.  “Enough about me, how’s working going?”

Making a face, Cat groaned. “Work is work. I decided to take lunch early and come check up on you.”

“Nick put you up to it didn’t he?” I guessed giving her a smirk.

Shaking her head, she put up her hands. “No of course not. I just wanted to stop by and see how you were.”

“Nick can be quite persuading when he wants to be.” I smirked watching Cat’s face grow red from my teasing. “That’s all right. You’re cool and when you actually remember to wear pants, I kinda like having you around.”

“Shut up!” Cat said ducking her head to hide the redness in her cheeks.

I grinned. “Seriously though, I like having you around, you are good for Nick. You two are gunna get married, and make gorgeous babies together.”

“Excuse me?” Whipping around, my eyes grew wide hearing my brother’s voice. “What exactly are we discussing here?”

“Nicky! What are you doing home?” I smirked innocently as he walked over and kissed Cat.

Pointing a finger in my direction, he shook his head. “I just stopped by to check up on you. Never dreamed I’d walk into that conversation.”

“I’m just stating the obvious.” I smirked and tapped my fingers on the counter. “Hop to it Nicky. I want another sister-in-law sooner rather than later. And this time I want a nephew instead of a niece. No pressure!”

“Uh-huh…now that we’ve heard your demands, how are your numbers?” Nick asked dismissing my request for a nephew and leaning against the counter.

Giving a so-so gesture with my hand, I sighed. “I was at 62 when Cat came, but had myself a little candy therapy so I was just about to test again.”

“Good.” He said turning to Cat. “And you, miss, how have you been?”

Gagging and sticking my tongue out, I went about testing while trying to block out the mushiness coming from my older brother.

“How about the peanut gallery hushes and just concentrates on testing?” Nick teased as I stuck my tongue out at him.

Feeding the bead of blood onto the strip, I looked over my shoulder at Nick. “How about you stop the mushiness and go greet your girlfriend in the other room? I was here first.”

“I was here first? What are you, five?” Nick teased. “And for future reference, I’ll greet my girlfriend however I want in whatever room I want. How’s the blood sugar?”

Pumping my fist, I grinned. “100 baby!”

“Nice!” Nick said giving me a high five for my pretty number. “So Morgan stopped me in the hallway earlier this morning and asked if you could go over to her house after school.”

I smiled. “Oh she did?”

“Yes she did, I told her that as long as you were feeling up to it you’re more than welcome to go visit. She said to tell you head over around 3.” Nick relayed the message to me.

Nodding, I put my test supplies away before looking at him. “I’ll head over there after school but I’ll be home in time for dinner.”

“That’s fine. Cat, Dani, Kev, and the girls are joining us for dinner.” Nick said hugging Cat closer to his side.

“What are we having?”

Nick smirked. “I haven’t decided yet. I was thinking we might just keep it low key and get pizza but I’ll take suggestions.”

“Low key pizza sounds good to me.”

Looking at his watch, Nick grabbed his stuff. “I better get back to school, have an exciting afternoon full of school work.”

I rolled my eyes, “Thanks Nicky, and Cat, thank you for stopping by with candy.” I smiled. “I’ll see you when I get home from Morgan’s.”

“All right baby girl, have a good afternoon.” He kissed my forehead. “Love you.”

“Love you too Nicky.”
