His mother once told him no one is born good. Innocent, yes, but not good.

"Every single person on this earth is born with curses." she said. "It could be where you're born, or a type of illness. Sometimes it's even the things or the people we love. It's our job to fight to be good."

Even at a young age, Victor knew his family was his curse.

Freedom had been something he struggled with his entire life. It was the only thing he ever wanted. Well, besides Mila. But the universe was indifferent to things being fair.

At least she would have a good life.

He took one last look at the manor before letting it disappear in his rearview. It felt final. Like the last time he'd see it. He wasn't physically cuffed, but he may as well have been. The two men he sat between were not letting him go anywhere.

He didn't fail in his quest, but he couldn't say he was altogether successful either. He'd saved his and Mila's lives, and freed his brother from the Partners. However, the death of his companions soured an already bittersweet victory.

The crew had cleaned up Olga and Raul's remains with swift efficiency, and by the time he'd come to, it was like nothing had ever happened. Like they hadn't existed at all.

The two of them had been there during the darkest time of his life. They'd nurtured him back to health, been his only companions, and now, they were dead. Turned to ash like everything else in his life. Moving forward, he would do everything he could for their families.

He was alone now.

Within 24 hours he'd be back home. They would fly into Chisinau, where a car would be waiting to escort him to his family's estate. The next day he'd wake up in Moldova like he never left. Like the past four years, including his time in Seattle were a dream.

He smiled for a moment, thinking how his father would react to his current plight.

Well Igor, I guess you won, he thought to himself.

He'd be given a chance to reaffirm his loyalties, but only after being beaten within an inch of his life. After, he'd take up the family mantle like a good boy, marry a politically appropriate girl, and live the rest of his life in misery. He'd be what his father always wanted.

A cursed shell.

What do you think of Victor's ending? Personally, I feel poetic justice. One more chapter to go! (I promise it will be much longer.)
