Chapter 38: Love (Adam's POV)

I was the one feeling a bit nervous now. I haven't done this with Emilia since we were seventeen. We're certainly not seventeen anymore.

Emilia isn't a girl anymore, she's a fucking gorgeous, beautiful, stunning, and breathtaking woman. One that I'm in love with. The most important thing to me is for her to enjoy this just as much, if not more than me.

"You okay?" she asked, her hands resting on my shoulders. She moved one to my face, stroking my cheek.

I nodded, shifting and adjusting myself so I was closer to her.

What if she changes her mind?

"Adam, I want this. I really fucking want this," she said. She held my gaze as I slid my hips forward slowly, entering her. She sucked in a sharp breath, her eyes closing tightly while I held myself up.

"You tell me when to move, Emmy," I said, my voice coming out strained.

"Really? I liked it better when you ran the show," she panted, finally opening her eyes.

I chuckled, kissing her softly before pulling away. "You run it this time." I put an arm around her waist and rolled us over without warning without detaching myself from her.

She cursed under her breath and stared at me as I lay under her with her hips straddling mine.

"You're in charge," I told her.

"I don't like being in charge," she sighed, leaning down to kiss me.

I mumbled against her lips, "Really? Because I kind of like this position for you."

She smiled against my lips as my hands found her hips. I clenched my jaw as she moved her hips but barely. My hands were not guiding her in the least. She knew exactly what she was doing to me even if she wasn't doing it intentionally. "Does it feel good?" she whispered, moving her hips in a slow circle.

I nodded briefly, holding her gaze. "Really fucking good. Keep going."

She didn't stop, she never faltered once, but she slowed down, teasing me every time I let a groan slip. The smile on her face when I rolled us back over told me clearly that it was what she wanted. Me on top of her.

"Maybe you're not such a good girl then," I chuckled, moving a little faster, going a little deeper, and taking her breath away with each shift.

"You talk a lot," she panted, "I like it."

"I can tell, Rubes."

She closed her eyes and briefly trembled beneath me. She could make me come undone in just a few moments and I was so lucky that she didn't fully understand just how much power she had over me.

"Fuck, Rubes," I whispered, wanting more. It wasn't enough, not even close. I wanted every part of her, I wanted to relish my time with her and devour her over and over again in every possible way. I wanted her shaking beneath her, I wanted nothing but my name of her lips, her nails dragging along my skin, her breathy moans in my ear. I slowed down, wanting to make this last as long as I could, but she seemed just as desperate as me.

She moved against me faster, lifting her hips and meeting my thrusts. Eager, faster. She wanted it harder, deeper and I matched her intensity. My lips moved to the perfect spot on her neck as she writhed beneath me, her nails digging into my back, her legs pulling me in closer. It was getting harder to restrain ourselves. "Adam," she moaned breathlessly in my ear. "I can't—"

"Yes, you can. I'm nowhere near done with you yet," I mumbled, kissing her right below the ear.

"It's too much," she whimpered.

"Focus, Rubes."

"But—"

"Be good. Come on. You can take it."

"Adam," she groaned, right there at the edge.

I was almost there with her, losing more and more control over myself as time went on. I moved naturally, instinctively. My hips thrust on their own accord and it felt so right with her. It had never felt like this with anybody before. Only her. Even all those years ago on that one night. Despite being partially drunk, I remember it so well. The way I felt, the way she made me feel. She made me feel powerful and she made me want to be the best version of myself that I could be. For her.

"Adam, please, I—"

"Let it go," I whispered. She moaned my name louder this time, taking in a heavy breath and I was right there with her. To me, the world stuttered on its axis. No girl except her has ever or could ever make me feel so good. "Fuck," I grunted, slowing down, my lips brushing against her ear. I slowed down to a stop before pulling away, staring at her. I rolled off, lying beside her. "I love you," I told her, brushing her hair from her eyes.

"I love you," she whispered, turning to me.

We just lay still for a few minutes before we gathered our energy again. "Shower with me," I said, tracing her arm.

She chuckled, "Shower?"

I nodded. "Just shower, I promise."

She shook her head. "I want a bath."

I kissed her slowly. "Then I shall run you a bath." While she continued to lay in bed, I cleaned up while the tub filled up before adding some soap for bubbles and getting in. "Emmy," I called out.

"Coming," she sang before appearing in front of me. I stared and I stared. She was still naked, carelessly now, and climbed in while tying up her hair. I pulled her forward while she sat with her knees pulled in and kissed her.

After we both pulled away, I grabbed her hand, fidgeting with her fingers and moving them around, crossing and uncrossing them. "Ruby."

"Yeah?" she asked, watching me carefully.

"Do you maybe want to come with me tomorrow? For practice. Like you used to."

She stared at me quietly.

"You can sit at the bleachers or inside, wherever you want. You can take your laptop and write in the meantime. Maybe afterward, we can go grab lunch. I'll drop you off at your apartment then."

She nodded, "Sure. Yeah, I'd love to come with you. Are you busy tomorrow evening?"

"Not that I know of. Why?"

She paused in thought and then shrugged mostly to herself. "Maybe you can spend the night at my apartment. I don't know if that's safe or whatnot but it's just a thought. I don't live in a penthouse," she chuckled, "but I'm sure we'll have fun. Otherwise... I guess I can stay here again."

"That's okay. I'll stay with you."

"You don't have to. If you want to stay at your place, you can. I'll stay at my apartment, we could meet the next day."

"No," I shook my head, wiping bubbles and soap off her chin. "I don't want to spend a night alone without you. We'll stay at yours. Next time, we can stay at mine."

"We'll keep switching?" she laughed.

"Yeah..." I stared at her while she nodded, using her free hand to push bubbles around. "Or you could move here."

Her eyes snapped back up to mine. "Are you serious?"

"Yeah, of course, I am."

"I mean, uh, wouldn't it be too soon?"

"Maybe. But does that really matter? Except for the five years, we lost, you've been with me for my whole life. I'm pretty sure I've slept more at your house than I have at mine," I chuckled. "It's just an idea, it's okay if you say no," I reassured her, lathering bubbles on her cheeks, giving her a Santa Claus beard.

She smiled, suppressing a life as I wiped it all off while laughing. She picked up a huge clump of bubbles and dropped it on the top of my head.

"Are you giving me a hat?"

"Yes, I am."

"Okay."

She scooted closer, adding more and more each time. I stared at her while she focused on the bubble hat. Her tongue poked out from the corner of her mouth as she zoned in and worked intently. I stole a kiss in between before she pulled away, leaving the bubbles there, and then met my gaze. "Okay," she nodded.

"Good hat?" I asked.

She laughed, shaking her head, "Horrible. But I'm not talking about the hat."

I lifted my brows. "Really?"

She nodded. "I can live with you. I want to live with you. We want to be around each other all the time, that's just where we are in our relationship. And everybody says that's a phase that never lasts. But if it really doesn't last then the least we could do is make it count. I love you. I love you a lot. Of course, I'll live with you. I'd be happy to."

I pulled her in closer by her legs and kissed her again.

I was and am so madly in love with her and she is with me and yet somehow, our whole lives we were stupid enough to call it a friendship. It was only us who called it a friendship.

She pulled me deeper into the kiss, smiling against my lips. "I love you a lot, Adam," she whispered.

"I love you so fucking much, Rubes."

It was only us who called it friendship. They all called it love. And now we knew just how right they were.

Emilia was, is, and always will be my only best friend. Nobody has ever been able to replace her. But now she's so much more to me. She's the girl I want to marry, the girl I want to settle down and start a family with one day. She's my everything.

They all called it love and they were right. It is love.
