The lights were dimmed and the whole gymnasium smelled like sweat and perfume you buy at the dollar store. I couldn't tell if the third scent was weed or the skunk someone ran over a few streets down.

"Who was that?" I impatiently asked Axel, nudging his side as we got situated inside the gymnasium dance floor.

"Don't worry about it," he says like he's brushing off their encounter totally.

"I know who it was," I bluntly tell Axel.

"Oh yeah? Who was it?" He asks with a cocky tone to his voice.

"Julian Heinshire," I tell him as my arms cross at my chest.

Axel chuckles and throws his head back dramatically like my answer was something so ridiculous. "How the hell did you know that?"

I tighten my arms subconsciously and lower my eyes to the floor to look at my shoes. I see Axel's hand come into view and it pushes my chin up so my eyes are level with his. "What has that punk done to you?"

I shrug and shift my shoes around before looking back at him. It's already hot and uncomfortable with hundreds of teenagers cramped inside a gymnasium that's not even meant to hold so many bodies at once. "He's just done some things... I'd rather not say."

"Tell me right now," Axel raises his voice as he speaks and it causes me to jump back a bit.

"Okay, okay, he's threatened me multiple times because he assumed I was gay, but I never came out to anyone but my family or you..."

Axel grabbed my shoulders and shook me, a small chuckle leaving his plump lips, "The whole school knows we're gay now, including Julian. In fact, Julian is half gay too."

"Half gay?"

"Bisexual," Axel clarifies with a shrug, "he's my ex boyfriend."

I gawked at him and covered my mouth to extinguish my surprise. "But... but you told me you wanted to come out..."

Axel shook his head and put a finger to my lips, "That kid is so poisonous I told myself I'd never think of him again."

I just stared at Axel. I wasn't even mad that he lied to me, I wasn't even mad that he dated Julian either. I was mad that this kid had to make an appearance and ruin our night.

"I hope he didn't ruin anything," Axel tells me now.

I shake my head, "It's too late."

"Come on," Axel says, and I can hint that he's trying to cheer me up, "let's just forget about him and dance and have fun."

I nod and point to Axel's left shoulder, my face twisting in disgust as I see Julian hovering over him from behind. His expression is too confident.

Axel turns around now and jumps back a little when he sees that Julian is practically breathing down his neck.

"What?" He asks defensively.

"Just checking on you two faggots," he tells us with a cocky smirk.

"Faggots? If I remember correctly, you were the bottom," Axel says as his fingers rub his chin like he's actually thinking about his answer.

I can't help but chuckle, Julian's eyes now darted in place on me like I was the target.

"Nothing here is funny, asshole," Julian told me before locking his eyes back on Axel, "I don't even know who the fuck you are."

Axel tilted his head and let out a loud laugh, biting down onto his index finger before speaking again, "Maybe you would remember if I showed you my penis."

Julian's face twisted in even greater disgust after Axel's penis comment, and I just sat back and watched.

"Admit it, you know who I am. Why are you hanging around me so much in the first place?" Axel asks him with his head still tilted.

Julian just shrugged and flashed a fake smile, pointing over to where his prom date was, a skinny brunette in a jewel-laden purple dress.

"That's my girl," he tells us even though neither of us asked.

"Cool," Axel stated, pointing to me, "that's my boy."

Julian just smirked again and bounced once on his feet before taking off in the direction of his prom date who was socializing with the popular crowd.

"What's wrong with that kid?" I asked, replaying his awkward approach to Axel and me.

"We were only together for three months last year. I could never figure him out and I'm almost positive he cheated," Axel shrugged and smacked his lips together at the end of his statement.

"Anyway," I broke the silence, "let's just go dance."

Axel led me out onto the dance floor and it didn't take long before we were moving along with each other and the music.

I actually hated dancing so I quickly ended our session and pulled him aside. "How about we just leave?" I suggested, both of my hands clasped on his arms.

"Really?" Axel asked me as he caught his breath from dancing.

I nodded in response, "This is kind of really lame."

"But what about prom king and queen?" Axel told me with a hint of whine in his voice.

"Who cares..." I bluntly said, "let's go!"

I took his arm in both of my hands, pulling him towards the cafeteria's exit. We fought through a few crowds and finally made it outside into the fresh air.

Axel fished around for his car key, finally finding it, unlocking the luxurious car I still couldn't even comprehend that Axel's family owned.

Prom was a washout.
