Total Eclipse

A/N I was inspired by today's events so I decided to write this short little one shot. I live in Pennsylvania so we only had a partial eclipse and I didn't even get to see it, but the total eclipses were all over the news. I just thought this would be a cute SUPER short one shot to write. Plus, I haven't updated this in a while.

"Are you guys ready for the eclipse?" some girl— I think her name is Kelsey— asked as she came up to my group of friends unexpectedly.

Kelsey is the kind of girl who thinks she is everyone's friend.

"Um, yeah," my friend Dominic answered.

Everyone is gathered in our local park for a pre-eclipse party of sorts. But to be honest, I'm not that excited for the eclipse itself. I'm excited for what happens during the eclipse.

Right at the peak of darkness, I get to meet him.

I've never been so nervous, but thankfully my nervousness could look like excitement to anyone that doesn't know what's going on in my head.

We've never met before. You know, me and him. But don't get all uppity about stalkers and old dudes. He goes to a school nearby and I know people who know him. But until today we've only ever spoken over the phone.

When he asked if I wanted to meet him, I was pretty shocked. He had never brought it up before. Part of me was afraid he would never want to meet and I was just some kind of fling with him. But I guess not...

"What about you, Thomas?" Kelsey asks now, breaking me out of my thoughts.

"What?" I ask. She's smiling too brightly at me. It's almost creepy. I think she has a crush on me and she somehow hasn't realized I'm gay yet.

  "Are you excited?" she repeats.

"Um, yeah. Who wouldn't be," I answer with not much feeling.

Kelsey turns to the rest of the guys around me, but I'm pretty sure she is still talking to me when she asks, "Are you guys going to find a special someone to watch it with?" Half the guys in the group laugh the other half hug their girlfriends to their sides as if saying, "obviously."

She turns back to me. "What about you, Thomas?"

"Nope, no one special. Just these guys." I gesture to my friends.

My friend Reggie slaps me on the shoulder. "Oh come on, Tommy. We're plenty special."

I roll my eyes and manage a laugh.

"Okay," Kelsey chirps trying to stay cheerful. "Well maybe I'll see you before it's over, Thomas."

I say, "Sure," but I really mean, "not a chance." I'm not letting anyone ruin my plans, not today.

Kelsey skips away to another group of people that she thinks are her friends.

Just then, my phone starts ringing. It's him. I try not to let my smile get too big as I get up and walk a little ways away from the group.

"Hey," I whisper into the phone after hitting the answer button.

"Hey. Are you ready?" he asks.

  "Yeah. Are you here?"

"Not yet. I'm on my way. Remember 1:30."

  "1:30. I wouldn't miss it."

"See you then," he says, and I swear I could hear the smile in his voice.

"See you then," I repeat with a big smile as well.

I go back to my group of friends, practically bouncing out of my seat as I sit and wait. I'm so tired of waiting. The eclipse has already started but it won't reach totality until 1:30 when I get to meet him. I look down at the time on my phone. 1:20.

I get up, turning to my friends.

"I'll be right back," I say to them.

"But, dude, it's almost covered. You'll miss it. Now is not the time for a pee break," Reggie says to me.

I roll my eyes. "I won't miss it. I'll be right back."

I start zigzagging my way to our meeting spot, doing my best to not make it obvious as to where I'm going. It has already gotten so dark, and cold, too. I wish I brought a sweatshirt.

I enter the little bit of woods that surround the park. There's a little trail and I follow it a little ways before turning off of it. I know, I know, you're not supposed to get off the path, but I've gone this way loads of times. There are only a few lucky citizens of my town that know of this secret little get away and apparently he and I are two of them.

I get to the small hidden pavilion and look around. He's not here yet. I can't help but let my face fall in disappointment even though I know I'm early.

I look at the clock again. 1:26.

I begin to get antsy, pacing back and forth underneath the old pavilion. I should be looking at the eclipse right now, any normal person would be, but all I want to see is him. Part of me is still afraid that he isn't real and I've been making him up this whole time, that all those phone calls were just my imagination. I know how unlikely that sounds, but I've been so alone for so long, who knows what my brain is capable of.

Then, I hear footsteps.

I turn around to the opening of the pavilion, and there he is. For a second he freezes when he notices me. Part of me freaks out, thinking that's a bad sign, but then that huge grin that I heard in his voice before on the phone spreads across his face. He moves towards me and when he's a just a few inches away, he stops.

"Hey," he whispers.

"Hey," I whisper back.

He looks at a fancy watch that he has on his wrist. "It's 1:30, you should be looking at the eclipse. Come on."

He grabs my hand and pulls out from under the pavilion. "Is it safe to look at it now?" I ask hesitantly.

"Yeah. When it's completely covered is the only time you can look at it without the glasses."

We both look up. He's still holding my hand.

"Whoa," I whisper once my frazzled brain finally processes what it sees.

"I know," he whispers.

We both look away once the sun starts to pop out again and end up looking at each other.

"It's so good to see you, Thomas," he whispers and I shiver at the sound of my name coming from his lips.

"It's good to see you, too, Bryce."

"I thought this would be weird, but it's not. It's like I've known you forever."

"Yeah," I whisper weakly. I swear his face got closer.

"I'm sorry we had to meet like this, I'm just– I'm not out yet."

"It's okay." His face definitely moved closer, now. I find myself staring at his lips.

I force myself to look back up to his eyes but he is staring at my lips, too. I gulp.

"Is it okay– Can I–" he struggles to find the words but I think I know what he is going to ask, so I nod.

He leans in the last bit and our lips touch. The kiss is slow at first, hesitant. It's the first time for both of us. Bryce moves his hand that isn't holding mine up to my cheek, rubbing it gently with his thumb. I feel his tongue against my lips and I slowly open my mouth. I don't really know what I'm doing, so I let Bryce do most of the work, which might be rude since he doesn't really know what he is doing either. The kiss is good, none the less.

By the time we pull back we're both out of breath and the world is light again. I blush.

"Whoa," I repeat.

Bryce chuckles. "Definitely whoa," he agrees.

We kind of just stare at each other for a while before I realize that I have friends who I told I wouldn't be long. "Maybe we should head back. My friends are probably looking for me," I say reluctantly.

"Okay," he responds with the same reluctance.

We hold hands on the entire walk back, but we grudgingly release each other once the park comes into view. We turn to each other, knowing we'll have to part ways now.

"We should do this again sometime," Bryce says shyly.

"Definitely," I respond with a smile.

Bryce takes a quick look around before leaning in to give me a quick peck on the lips. "I'll call you tonight," he says.

All I get out is a quick okay before he's walking away towards a group of kids that I don't recognize. I sigh. God, I wish that what happened in the woods could go on forever. Today's events definitely exceeded my expectations.

I guess you could say I experienced a total eclipse of the heart...

Oh God, I'm such a nerd.

I hang my head in shame the whole way back to my group of friends, but I'm smiling on the inside.

A/N(again) there will be no part two of this one shot!!! So don't even ask. This is just a short one I wrote for the occasion.
