Third Person

The sound of the alarm tore through the glade. Victoria, who had been eating lunch, stood up abruply, and ran to the box that would be coming up in 30 minutes. Newt joined her a moment later, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her to his side.

"You think he's going to be a slopper?" Victoria asked Newt. They always made bets on what they think the greenie's job was going to be.

"Depends. Let's bet when we see him first." Victoria nodded and closed her eyes briefly. She hadn't changed much, she got taller, her hair longer, and more fit. She was accustomed to the ways of the glade by now, and helped out with most greenies when she wasn't running the maze.

Newt had changed more than she had. He looked older, more mature than she did. His hair had grown and so had his muscles from working in the gardens. His beautiful brown eyes had not changed. Newt's leg didn't fully heal, he was unable to run and had a limp because of his injury. No one knew what had happened besides Minho, Alby, the med-jacks and herself.

"Is that the Greenie alarm?" Victoria opened her eyes and looked at the old greenie in front of her. The poor boy was only 12 and was stuck here in the glade. Chuck was an adorable little thing that Victoria couldn't help but put under her wing. He had brown curls, rosy cheeks, and was a little bit on the chubby side.

"Yeah it is. Looks like your not the Greenie anymore." Victoria smiled and ruffled his hair while Chuck looked proud for some odd reason.

'"Do I get to show the Greenie around?" Chuch asked hopefully. Victoria chuckled and patted his shoulder.

"Sure ya shank. Just don't tell him anything, leave that to us." Chuck nodded before running off, probably to set up the Greenie's sleeping area.

"How old do you think the Greenie will be?" Victoria turned and looked up at Newt before shaking her head.

"I don't know? Maybe the same age? Everyone around here is around the same age." Newt nodded and was about to speak but was interupted by the alarm signaling that the box had arrived. The gladers surrounded the box, and Victoria told them to bug off. Cautiously, Alby, Victoria, and Newt worked to remove the top of the box. Everyone curiously peeked into the box looking for the boy.

"Look at that shank."

"How old is he?"

"Looks like klunk in a T-shirt."

"You're the klunk, shuck-face."

"Dude, it smells like feet down there."

"Hope you enjoyed the one-way trip Greenie."

"Ain't no ticket back, bro."

Victoria shot the boys a glare before looking into the box for the Greeenie. The boy sat against the far wall of the box, covering his eyes from the bright sun. Victoria felt sympathetic for the guy so she jumped in before Gally or Alby could. The boy started to move away from her as she walked closer to her but stopped when she put her hands up showing she meant no harm.

"Calm down there greenie. You're safe here with us, we're not going to hurt you." She kind of directed the statement towards Gally rather than the boy in front of her.

Victoria finally got a good look at the boy. He was around their age, maybe older than Victoria. He had brown hair and brown eyes, as well as a slightly tan complexion and tall, lean frame. A feeling of recognition came through Victoria and she narrowed her eyes at the boy, wondering why he was familiar.

Maybe I'm remembering something. She thought. She hadn't had many memories since she was in a coma.

"I'm Victoria. Can you tell me your name?" She offered the boy a hand to skake. The boy shook his head but took the hand that she offered.

"Thomas. My name is Thomas." The boy sounded frightened and confused. The same as everyone else when they first arrived.

"Let's get you out of the box and show you around." The boy shakily stood up and leaned on Victoria for balance. Victoria called down for a rope that would pull both of them out.

"Put your foot through the loop and hold on. The boys will pull you up." The greenie nodded and put his foot through the loop and the gladers hauled him up. Once the boy was out of the box, the rope was thrown down to Victoria and she was pulled up quickly.

"Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade."

Thomas whipped his around, taking in the glade but stared at the maze longer. Victoria noticed Gally wa laughing at the boy and shot him a glare.

"Look at the Greenbean." Gally's scratchy voice broke out. Everyone, including Thomas, looked at Gally.

"Gonna break his shuck neck checkin' out the new digs." Several boys laughed with Gally but Victoria face palmed. Leave it to Gally to play bully.

"Shut your hole, Gally." Newt was the one to respond this time. Thomas looked at him and then moved his eyes to Minho who stood beside him. Then his eyes trailed to Chuck and back to Victoria.

"Where am I?" Thomas pleaded with his voice to give him answers.

"Nowhere good." Alby answered.

"Which keeper he gonna get?"

"I told ya, shuck-face. He's a klunk, so he'll be a Slopper- no doubt about it." The boy giggled like he said the funniest thing in the world. To Victoria, it sounded like the stupidest thing in the world.

"I said shut your holes!" Alby yelled out, clearly angry. Victoria stepped back knowing that an angry Alby was a bad Alby.

Alby began explaining the basics, leaving out big pieces of information. But Thomas was being a curious little shuck and kept asking questions.

"I said I'll give you the tour tomorrow, Greenie. Now shut your hole and go with Chuck and Victoria." Victoria pointed at herself confused. Alby gave her a look and she sighed in defeat.

"C'mon Greenie, let's get you set up." Chuck grabbed Thomas' hand and led him to where he would be sleeping. Chuck had set up his sleeping bag right next to his own and Victoria felt sympathetic for the new guy. Chuck never stopped babbling and Thomas would soon learn that.

After showing him where he would sleep, Victoria led him to the kitchen so Thomas could finally get something to eat.

"Hungry?" Thomas nodded right away and eagerly followed her to the kitchen. The both waited in line for Frypan to serve them some food before Victoria led him to her table. Chuck was already seated as well as Newt.

Victoria took a seat next to Newt and leaned over to kiss him on the cheek. He smiled at her and grabbed her hand under the table. Thomas took a seat next Chuck and ate quietly but stole glances at the couple in front of him.

"Are you the only girl?" Thomas asked curiously. He hadn't seen any girls around here except for Victoria and he wondered why.

"Yeah." Thomas nodded and continued eating. While he ate, he couldn't stop thinking about this place. Why was he here? Who sent them here?

The four gladers were soon approached by Minho, who took a seat next to Victoria. Victoria grumbled about how crowded the seat had now become and how Minho got fatter. Minho gasped looking shocked before going on a full on rant about he was not fat. In the end, Minho took Victoria's spot and she ended up on Newt's lap, although she didn't really mind.

"Chuck, go take Thomas to bed. It's been a long day." Chuck nodded and told Thomas to follow him once again. The teenager looked back at Victoria, who was already looking at him. He nodded at her before catching up with Chuck.

Why does he look so familiar? Victoria couldn't get those brown eyes out of her mind, even when she went to sleep.
