Chapter Thirty: My Guardian Angel

A few days had passed since that night of tests at UA. Honestly, I had lost track of time, given that I was barely sleeping every night, afraid I'd get stuck again. I managed to time out 10 minute naps with my new phone by setting an alarm. It helped keep me a little aware but not by much. I think the worst part of it was that Aizawa was starting to catch on. My focus was becoming increasingly spacey, and my reaction time was like that of a unicorn. In other words, non-existent.
I tried to relax when Aizawa was busy with school, that way, when he returned home, I'd look somewhat rested. I didn't want him to worry before he had to head off to patrol, now that he was back into the swing of things...no pun intended.

Around 3:45pm, I heard the usual turn of the lock at the door before it opened. Then came Cloud's overly excited meows of affection. Right on schedule.

"Yes, yes. I know, I know. I'll feed you in a minute." said Aizawa to his cat, who rubbed up against his leg.

"Welcome back!" I greeted, as I walked from my room to the living room.

He hummed in response and walked towards the couch, where he collapsed face first.

"Long day?" I asked, as I sat on the arm of the couch.

"Hmmmmm." was all I could hear, muffled into the cushion.

"Anything interesting happen?" I asked.

"Hmm." he muffled.

"I take that as a no?" I asked, trying to hide my amusement.

"God, you ask as many questions as Hizashi." he said after turning his face to the side to talk, "Yes, it's been a long day. I've just come back from the station to escort my students to their internships. Other than that, nothing interesting has happened. Now, it's time to rest."

"Well, I'll leave you to it, then." I said, as I stood up and started to walk away.

"And just where do you think you're going?" he asked.

I stopped and turned around, looking rather confused.

"Umm...to my room?" I answered, not sure about where this was going.

"I don't think so. You're staying here and resting with me." he said, drawing his finger in the air to move to him.

"...Excuse me?" I asked, unsure if I even heard him correctly.

"You haven't been sleeping these last couple of days and it shows. I intend for that to stop now. So are you going to comply, or do I have to make you?" he said, almost menacingly.

I folded my arms.

"I don't see how I-..." I started to say until Aizawa's capture weapon immediately sprang forward and wrapped itself around my wrist, before dragging me across the wooden floor, towards him on the couch.

"Was that necessary?!" I yelled.

"Was arguing with me necessary?" he retorted, "Now shut up, and sleep."

"How do you propose I do that? I'm on the floor!" I said, trying to pry off his capture weapon, which was still tight around my wrist.

"The floor is perfectly fine, but if you insist on being stubborn about it, you can either use my sleeping bag, or I can trade places with you on the couch." he said, still watching me try and get his stupid scarf off of me, "Either way, that's not coming off until I know you're asleep."

I growled in anger, as I flopped my hands to my lap out of frustration.

"Whichever makes this more uncomfortable to you, I'll go with." I seethed.

"Neither option I gave will put me in a bad position." he said, waiting for me to choose.

Then suddenly, a petty idea crossed my mind.

"How about option number three?" I asked, a grin spreading across my face.

Aizawa's eyebrows raised.

"You must be tired, because I don't recall giving you a third option." he said.

"Option number three, we spoon on the couch and sleep together." I said, defiantly.

"Absolutely not." he said, his expression serious now, with a very light blush dusting his cheeks.

"Oh no," I said, getting up and moving towards him on the couch, "you said, no - insisted, you wanted us to rest together. Well, you're getting a taste of your own medicine. If I have to be put in this uncomfortable position, then so do you."

"If it means you actually get some well needed sleep, then so be it. But I won't tolerate any shenanigans beyond that. Understood?" he said, still fuming slightly that I put him into a corner.

I nodded and he slowly moved backwards against the couch, creating room for me to nuzzle in in front of him, back facing him. I felt his arm wrap over me, his capture weapon in hand, which was close to my wrist. I definitely knew I wasn't going to be able to sneak away with him this close, especially with his hand on his weapon while it was still attached to me.

"Now go to sleep." he said, his gruff voice not too far from my ear.

"It's barely 4 o'clock. How am I supposed to sleep?" I asked, still slightly annoyed by this whole situation.

"I do it all the time. It's just a matter of shutting your mind off and letting your body take it from there." he said.

"...We're still talking about sleep, right?" I asked, my voice breaking slightly as I tried not to laugh. My smart ass question immediately resulted in a smack upside the head, "Ow!"

"Like I said, no shenanigans." he said, putting his hand back down across me.

"Buzzkill." I muttered under my breath.

"I heard that." he answered back, "Now try to sleep. You're not only delaying your nap but mine."

I laid there with him for awhile in silence, trying to dull my mind as it kept wandering from one question or thought to another. I tried listening to various noises from the apartment and muffled outdoors, but nothing really let my brain relax. I must've been doing this for at least 20 minutes or so, because I could tell Aizawa wasn't having it.

"You should be sleeping, Miss Doe." I heard Aizawa mumble out from behind me.

"I'm trying, but my brain has too many thoughts bouncing around." I said.

"Anything I can help with?" he asked.

I thought for a moment and then shuffled my way around so that I was facing him. His eyes were closed and he didn't move an inch, despite me being so close. He honestly resembled a hibernating bear.

"First off, how did you know that I couldn't read Japanese?" I asked.

He let out a sigh.

"That's what's keeping you up?" he asked, with slight annoyance.

"No, but it dawned on me after you refused my offer to help you grade papers awhile back that I never told you that. And then thinking back on it more, you left me a note in English once. I figured it was because you were bilingual, but it never really hit me that you knew even then." I said, waiting for him to answer.

He let out another sigh, before his eyes opened and met mine. I didn't break eye contact as I waited for him to respond. He then propped himself up with his hand before he spoke.

"I had known this while you were in the hospital. While you were in there, I kept tabs on you. Mostly in the effort of making sure you were to be trusted and that you were who you said you were. Through various channels, I was able to figure out that you needed assistance in signing various documents and applications. Given that you couldn't read the documents, and therefore couldn't sign them, they had to have it translated for you. It's one of the reasons why your hospital bracelet included text in both Japanese and English." he said.

I couldn't help but be shocked by hearing this. This whole time...he was watching me?

"What else do you know about me?" I asked.

"Honestly, not much. Not more than what the hospital indicated on their records. Truth be told, I don't even know what your real name is. I hope that gives you some peace of mind." he said, his eyes still not straying away from mine.

I looked down and tried to process everything he said. While it did bring a little relief about him not knowing every single detail, it was still surprising to know that while I thought he left me there to rot, he was technically being my guardian angel.

"Were you also the reason I was able to leave so easily, not Midnight?" I asked.

He nodded.

"How?" I asked.

"Pulled a few punches with people who owed me for a favor." he said, "Besides, I made a promise that I'd come back, should I find you to be telling the truth. And since you were, we needed to figure out what happened and why you were here. We couldn't very well help you if you were still stuck at the hospital."

I thought for a moment, letting that new bit of information sit before moving on to the next question. The one that kept me up at night.

"Anything else?" he asked.

"Yeah," I said, propping my head up, "did you ever have that phonecall with Nezu?" I asked.

"Yes." he answered, hesitantly.

"What did he tell you?" I asked.
