64| Rosé Means You're a Part of the Family

"WE have 2 chocolate oreo shakes, a mint chocolate chip, and a strawberry cheesecake," the waitress said, setting our milkshakes down at our table. She smiled and let us be.

We each grabbed our milkshake, lifting it up in the air. "Cheers to us and to the last milkshakes we will be sharing together before we are officially high school graduates," Jeremy said and we all clinked our glasses together. I immediately took a sip of my strawberry cheesecake milkshake. The best flavor to ever exist.

"I'm lowkey emo," Bianca said, moving her straw around in her mint shake. "Tomorrow we're gonna be graduates. And then all we've got is this summer before we go our separate ways."

"Aww, B. It kind of sounds like you might cry!" Jeremy teased.

Bianca glared at him across the table. "You are not catching this bitch cry. I'm sorry, not even for you people."

"We'll see about that tomorrow..." Jeremy murmured. "I have a bet with Cayden that Logan's gonna cry. And if Logan cries-"

"-Bianca cries," Gracie chimed in.

I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, we'll see about that."

"You're definitely gonna cry. Your boyfriend's the valedictorian, after all. You're definitely tearing up during his speech," Gracie said.

It was true. Noah was the valedictorian, meaning he would be giving the official Class of 2019 speech. I mean, of course, he was valedictorian. He was the smartest person in our grade. It didn't even bother me to admit it anymore. He had been practicing his speech for weeks is what he told me, although he wouldn't let me hear it or read it. He wanted it to be as special as it was going to be for every other senior, hearing it for the first time at graduation.

"Whatever," I muttered.

"Don't 'whatever' me," Gracie said. "You know you're gonna cry because he's going all the way to Stanford and you're going all the way to M.I.T. I mean, you two really couldn't have picked 2 further places."

"Facts," Jeremy said.

"We didn't do it on purpose. It just ended up this way," I said. "Let's not talk about me and Noah. Why don't we talk about you and Porkchop? You haven't told us what you think is gonna happen between you two when you go off to Duke."

Gracie had committed to Duke months ago on a full-ride scholarship for volleyball. She was an amazing libero and loved volleyball. Plus, Duke had always been her dream school. She was most excited to get to meet the basketball players, as Duke was always her favorite college basketball team, too. You wouldn't know she was obsessed with college basketball until March rolled around.

Gracie sighed. "I don't know what's gonna happen with us, honestly."

"Where's Porkchop going anyway?" Jeremy asked.

"I second that," I said. I don't know why I hadn't asked Porkchop where he was planning on going or what he was planning on doing. But it dawned on me right now just how curious I was.

"He's going to Pepperdine," Gracie said.

I nearly spit out my milkshake, but Jeremy actually did spit it out. Right onto Bianca's face. Jeremy's eyes widened and he covered his mouth as Bianca kept a straight-face, reaching over to grab a napkin and wiping the milkshake off of her face. Her glare towards Jeremy was intense.

"You. Suck," Bianca said.

"Okay, I'm sorry, but Gracie just told us that Porkchop, Clay, is going to Pepperdine!" Jeremy exclaimed. "But like... they have a low acceptance rate."

"And it's a pretty good school!" I added.

"He's not as dumb as people might think. Do you know what he got on his AP Physics exam?" Gracie asked and we shook our head. "A 5."

My mouth dropped open. "Porkchop got a 5?!"

"He's dumb in many ways, but he's actually pretty school smart," Gracie said, smiling. "Plus, he got in for volleyball, too. The coach was dying to have him on the team."

I shrugged. "The volleyball part makes a lot of sense. He's really good," I said. "I'm still tripped up on the fact that he got a 5 on his AP exam."

"Nothing should surprise me at this point," Jeremy muttered.

"So we're gonna be far from each other. I don't know... long distance is a bit intimidating," Gracie said. "I don't want to talk about it."

"We don't have to," Bianca said. "So we'll talk about Cayden and Jeremy instead! And we'll try to refrain from spitting any milkshakes into anyone's face."

"Sorry!" Jeremy exclaimed.

"You're both going to Georgia State," Gracie drawled and Jeremy's cheeks turned red.

"Yes, we are. But that doesn't mean anything," Jeremy said.

"Um, yes it does. It means that you 2 are going to be very close in proximity and you're definitely going to get married," Bianca said.

"Marriage? Isn't that a bit soon?" Jeremy asked, shaking his head. "Yes, we will be close, but what if he moves onto some hot volleyball guy or something? Like a Noah who's actually gay?"

"He wouldn't do that. This is Cayden we're talking about. He's loyal," I said.

"Except for the time he kissed Charlie," Gracie snickered.

And of course, Jeremy spit out his milkshake. Hitting Bianca yet again in the face. She looked like she was about to explode as she grabbed for another napkin to wipe it away.

"Cayden kissed Charlie?!" Jeremy said, facepalming himself.

"He did it to give him his first kiss!" I defended.

"And that's the other thing about Cayden... he's very giving," Gracie chimed in.

"Yeah. And he doesn't spit milkshake into people's faces!" Bianca yelled.

"I'm sorry! My boyfriend kissed a completely straight guy apparently, so obviously it shocked me!" Jeremy defended.

"Whatever. You are still going to die," Bianca threatened.

✯ ✯ ✯

I pulled up to Noah's house, parking in his driveway. I walked up to the front door and knocked. We were having a movie night tonight. He promised we would watch all of the Disney Channel Original classics like Princess Protection Program. He also promised we would watch the Nickelodeon movie, Rags. I loved that movie.

Noah's mom opened the door, sending me a warm smile. "Logan! Come in!" She said and I gladly walked in. I followed her into the kitchen, taking a seat at the counter while she did the dishes.

"He's not home yet, but it shouldn't be long before he is. He's been at the cafe all day working on his speech for graduation. You know how he is, always working hard," Alice said.

"Believe me, I know," I said.

"Are you excited for graduation tomorrow, sweetie? I know it's a big day!"

I shrugged. I was excited, yes. Excited to be done with high school, excited to start a new phase of my life, excited to spend the summer with friends and have the best time ever. But I was conflicted more than anything.

"Kind of," was all I said. Alice stopped washing the dishes and looked at me, craning her head to the side. She was a mom. She knew what I was thinking.

"You and your parents are still on rocky terms?" She asked and I nodded.

For over a week, I'd been living with the Grigio's. It was annoying at times because of Mr. Grigio's constant desire to paint my face, and not to mention Sebastian's countless attempts to flirt with me. He was persistent, I had to give it to him. And as much as I appreciated the Grigio's letting me stay with them, there remained the constant reminder that my parents hadn't talked to me since our fight after prom. They hadn't reached out to me or anything. I was graduating tomorrow, unsure of if they would even make it to the ceremony.

Billie had likely told my parents about the party on Acworth beach a few days ago. Truth be told, I didn't care. And it wouldn't matter, anyway. I was already being shunned by them, they wouldn't go out of their way to scream at me about yet another mistake. Billie was the least of my problems. My big problem was the fact that, even as much as I hated my parents for what they did to me, I obviously still loved them.

"You're afraid they won't show up to graduation," Alice said. She wasn't asking me for confirmation. She already knew that was what I was thinking.

"Why would they show up after everything? I mean, they kicked me out. And it's been longer than it ever has been before," I said.

"Do you want them there?" She asked.

"Of course I do. It's high school graduation, it's a life milestone. It would suck to not have them there even though I'm still mad at them," I admitted. "Is that crazy of me?"

Alice shook her head. "It's not crazy at all. They're your parents, your family. Of course you want them there to support you."

I sighed. "I just don't see it happening. They believe so strongly that I'm basically as bad as my sister. That I can't do anything right without making some dumb mistake. I'm sure Noah's told you all about it."

"He's told me some, but not too much. He didn't want to disrespect your boundaries," Alice said.

"Of course he didn't," I mumbled, laughing a bit. "Tell me, how did you raise the literal perfect guy?"

Alice laughed. "I think we got lucky if I'm being honest with you. Out of all the eggs in my body, the sperm chose Noah first. Pure luck."

"I'm sitting here talking about eggs and sperm with my boyfriend's mom. My life is so weird," I said. "But Noah's literally perfect. You did something right."

"As I said, luck," his mom said, shrugging. "Whether your parents are happy with your decisions or not, they're still your parents. And you're still their daughter. If they can't bring themselves to make it to your high school graduation, then that shows you where they stand."

"You're right," I said.

"I'm sure they'll come through. But even if they don't, you're a part of our family now. We will be there to support you regardless," Alice said, finishing up the dishes and heading over to the fridge. She pulled out a bottle of Rosé and poured 2 glasses, bringing one over to me. "Rosé means you're a part of the family."

I smiled and took the glass, taking a sip of the fruity, flowery Rosé. "Thanks, Alice."

"Any time, honey," she said. "You know, I've always hoped that Noah would date a girl as perfect for him as you. As nice as you."

"I'm not that nice," I said, laughing.

"You give him a hard time, yes, but you're also nice to him."

"He's way better than me," I admitted. "I'm the lucky one to have him, Alice. Not the other way around."

"Don't say things like that. Listen to me when I tell you that Noah talks about you all the time. He raves about you. He thinks you're more than amazing, Logan. He's just as lucky as you," Alice said right as the door opened and Noah walked in. Catching my eye, he started walking to join us in the kitchen.

"Are you drinking... with my mom?" He asked me, looking back and forth between me and his mom.

I laughed and so did Alice. "Maybe," I said, shrugging.

"Just doing some bonding," Alice said. "Waiting for you to get home from writing your speech. How's it going?"

Noah groaned and sat down beside me, wrapping his arm around my waist. "Speeches are way harder to write when you know you're gonna be giving them in front of not only the entire senior class, but the entire senior class's families. I think I've got it down though."

"And let me guess... you won't let me read it?" I asked.

"Absolutely not," Noah said, grabbing my drink and taking a sip.

"Hey!"

"Ladies only," his mom scolded.

Noah rolled his eyes. "You are not allowed to read my speech because that would ruin the anticipation of tomorrow!"

"Speaking of the anticipation of tomorrow..." I drawled. "The Stanford scholarship. Are you freaking out about that?"

Noah would get the news tomorrow at some random time in the day about whether he got the Stanford scholarship or not. He wanted it. It would pay for the entirety of his education and it would give him a high title going into college. A title that would elevate his status and impress anyone thinking of hiring him for an internship or hiring him for an actual job in the future. It was a big deal.

"I should be freaking out. It's probably the biggest thing of my life," Noah said. "It hasn't hit me yet, though. And let's try to keep it that way by turning on Rags immediately."

And so we did.
