12| If You Break This Balloon, I Swear...

I woke up to freezing cold water being dumped over me on Tuesday. Jolting up from my comfortable laying position, I opened my eyes and made contact with Cayden, Charlie, and Jordan laughing at me. Great. I was rooming with a bunch of hooligans.

"Seriously?" I asked.

Cayden shrugged. "You were going to oversleep and miss breakfast. Coach told us to wake you up."

"And you didn't think maybe just saying, 'hey, Noah, get up' would work?" I shook my head and slowly got up from the bed, shaking my hair like a wet dog. Cayden glared at me.

"You dick," he muttered, running his hand through his now slightly wet hair.

"You still love me," I teased.

After getting dressed, simply in some shorts and a t-shirt, the guys and I made our way to the main cabin where breakfast was being served. Upon entrance, a hand wrapped around my wrist, pulling me in the opposite direction of the guys. I didn't notice it was Logan until she shot me a glare.

"What are you doing?" I asked, incredibly confused.

"Coach D said I wasn't allowed to enjoy the deluxe breakfast until my partner showed up," Logan informed me, her hand still clutching onto my wrist. She let me go once we reached the kitchen and she turned to look at me, smirking. "I see why you're so late now. Serves you right."

"Whatever," I grumbled. "I wasn't aware that we would have to eat this together."

"Neither was I, but apparently it makes sense since we won as a team," she said, rolling her eyes. "I personally would rather not, but if it's what I have to do to eat this breakfast, I'm going to deal with it."

Suddenly Coach D brought us out 2 plates filled with blueberry pancakes, bacon, and "freshly-squeezed orange juice" or so he claims. He shooed us away to go sit down, and we, unfortunately, sat down across from each other, away from everyone else on the 2 teams. We were being forced to spend breakfast together. How exciting.

It was pretty silent between the 2 of us, which made sense. I didn't exactly expect us to want to talk to each other, or even to put forth the effort. But then again, I did promise Cayden I would at least try with Logan this week. Yesterday went surprisingly well, and maybe that meant today would be okay, too.

"You wanted to win so badly, just to get a pancake and bacon breakfast?" I questioned.

Logan looked up at me like I was stupid, and after finishing her bite of bacon, replied. "Um, obviously," she said. "Who wouldn't?"

I shrugged. "I guess I just wasn't aware that breakfast was so important."

"It's the most important meal of the day, Noah Locke," Logan said, grinning at me. "I thought you'd be smart enough to know that."

I rolled my eyes. "For a second I thought you might be warming up to me by smiling at me, Pierce. And then you had to go and take a shot at me."

"What can I say? I just can't seem to find it in me to actually like you," she replied.

"I like it better when you're mean, anyway," I said, standing up and putting my plate away so that I could head outside and chill out before the festivities started.

The day was spent mostly focusing on volleyball. We started pretty much right after breakfast, of course, I ended up talking Coach into starting a little later so that I could better digest my large (and delicious) breakfast. To avoid throwing up, obviously. But then again, I could have just gone along with it, and if I did end up throwing up, I could have just thrown up all over Noah. That would have been hilarious in my opinion, but Coach seemed to think otherwise.

So instead of starting volleyball activities at 9, we started at 10. We did all sorts of dumb shit, like 20 passes back and forth with your partner, 20 sets, 20 rounds of peppering, and so on. It was so annoying having to actually cooperate around Noah, but I knew Coach would've been mad with me if I tried to pull anything. So no matter how badly I wanted to "accidentally" hit the ball down towards Noah's nether-region, I held back the temptation.

We ended up playing a doubles grass tournament after all of the pointless drills. And, let me just tell you, it was intense.

"Seriously Noah?" I said, punching his arm. "All you have to do is get the ball over the net! Is it so impossible to wrap your head around that? Oh, wait, I forgot! You're an absolute moron!"

Noah rolled his eyes. "If I recall, you missed your serve on the 2nd point. So you shouldn't be the one talking!" He fired back.

"Whatever," I mumbled. "Just don't fuck it up this time, got it?"

Noah saluted me. "Yes, ma'am." I rolled my eyes at him.

I paid attention as the ball was served over the net by Charlie, who was partnered up with Genevieve. I felt slightly bad for the kid that he had gotten stuck with Genevieve. He was just a poor little freshman boy, and Genevieve was half of the evil on my team. The other half? I'm sure you are already aware.

The ball flew in Noah's direction, so I released up to the net as he passed the ball. The pass was nearly perfect (I say nearly because "perfect" is a word I couldn't even fathom using to describe anything about Noah Locke), and I set it up on the net. I watched as Noah took his approach, and inside I was thinking: Don't you fucking dare hit this ball into the net again, you dickface.

To my surprise, Noah slammed the ball down, hitting Genevieve in the chest as she attempted to dig the ball, really just flinging her body in the way. She was basically a human target. A wide grin spread over my face as I watched Genevieve lay on the ground breathing hard. I looked over to Noah and ran over, giving him a high-five.

"Oh hell yeah!" I exclaimed. "That was the shit, Locke! God, that just made my whole day."

He smiled, too, joining in on my laughter. "With a set like that? I could do that all day," he replied.

We watched as Charlie helped Genevieve up. "I'm totally fine," Genevieve said, sending a glare in Noah's direction. "You're going down, Noah!"

Noah scoffed and grabbed the ball to go back to serve. Genevieve's threat was incredibly lame, and definitely not even close to true. Noah wasn't going down, especially if it was up to her. I didn't like Noah, but I think I might have hated Genevieve a bit more. Girl hate was on a whole different level. And Genevieve was definitely one of the weakest on the team, there was no way she could come close to beating Noah.

Now it sounds like I'm bragging about Noah, but I am not, I assure you. He's still a bag of dicks. But he's a good doubles partner, and even I can put aside my hatred for him for the 2nd day in a row. That is, as long as we make sure to win.

The tournament continued on, with Noah and I winning every game. We were only playing to 10, anyway, so it wasn't like it was difficult. We had a bit of trouble only when we played Gracie and Cayden, and Jordan and Sophie. But other than that, it was a piece of cake. Noah and I won the tournament, and the coaches presented us with these fake, plastic gold medals. Even though it was a piece of worthless plastic, it was still a symbol of victory. And I loved victory.

Following the tournament, we all sat down for a picnic for lunch. We made sandwiches and drank Capri-Suns. It was honestly nice.

"Now, it's time for the water balloon toss game," Coach D announced once we all finished eating and had cleaned up. "Everyone will stand in a line directly across from their partner. You will be given 1 water balloon, and it's really simple. You just toss it back and forth, and the pair who keeps the balloon intact the longest— wins. Got it?"

So we all lined up, and standing across from Noah, I decided to send him a dirty look. Just to make sure he knew I still very much hated him. He returned the favor, and I was thankful. Although we had semi-gotten-along when we were playing the doubles tournament, that meant nothing to me. I was glad to see it meant nothing to him, either.

Coach Reid walked over and handed each pair one water balloon from a giant bucket filled with them. I held onto the water balloon and waited for the signal. Finally, Coach D blew his whistle and everyone began tossing the water balloon back and forth to their partner.

"Seems like a pretty lame game," Noah pointed out.

"It is," I said. "But if you break this balloon I will rip your dick off. Got it, Locke?"

"Promise?" He said, and an evil smile crept up onto his face. I widened my eyes, not prepared for what happened next.

Suddenly, water was splattered all over me. He really threw the water balloon at me. I could see some of the other players who had already broken the balloon look over in shock. I turned back to Noah, extremely pissed of.

"You are so dead," I warned. I marched over to the large bucket of water balloons and grabbed one, quickly chucking it at Noah, hitting him and splattering him with water.

"It's on," he said, and before I knew it, we were grabbing water balloons and throwing them at each other, starting a water war. I expected the coaches to break it up, but turns out, everyone else on the 2 teams joined in on the fight, making it our new activity.

I chucked a water balloon directly at Noah's face, hitting him square in the middle of his forehead. "I thought you might have gotten your fill of being soaked today!" I yelled at him, reminding him of his rude awakening this morning. "Apparently not!"

"I think you secretly just enjoy getting me wet, Pierce!" Noah retorted, chucking a balloon at me, but I dodged it.

"Oh please!" I scoffed. "Don't get so cocky or I really will rip your dick off and feed it to the bears!"

Noah laughed and shook his head. "Always a threat from you, Pierce. Wouldn't expect anything less." Noah held up his hands in mock-surrender. "Okay. I'm not going to throw anymore at you as long as you don't throw anymore at me. Deal?"

I raised one eyebrow at him. Seriously? A surrender? I thought about it before setting the water balloon down. I went over and shook Noah's hand. "Deal," I agreed.

Cayden walked over and started talking to Noah, half shielding himself from water balloons being chucked at him by Savannah. The reason for that was because, during the tournament, Cayden had ended up blocking one of Savannah's hits, sending the ball directly back into her face. To say she was mad would be a huge understatement. I had never seen her face turn so red with rage.

I smirked, noticing that Noah was deep in conversation with Cayden. I decided to use my opportunity to completely annihilate him. So I went over to the bucket of water balloons and grabbed the entire thing, making my way over to Noah. His back was towards me, and I saw Cayden look at me as I held up the bucket. His eyes widened, and I quickly lifted the bucket up, dumping the rest of the water balloons and the water from the bucket over Noah's head, completely soaking him. Noah turned around, his mouth wide. I walked up towards him, placing my pointer finger on his chest.

"I win," I said.

I expected Noah to be pissed and to storm off or do something, anything to get back at me. But instead, he just looked at me. He looked at me and then he smiled.

And then I smiled. And for a moment, it actually felt genuine.
