Amari
A Week Later

I was sitting on the couch of the dress shop as Mom and Mrs. Brooks looked through racks of dresses. We were shopping for our banquet outfits and I really wasn't feeling it. No amount of padding could stop these crutches from hurting my armpits. I should've gotten a wheelchair.

"Can I assist you with anything?" A smooth voice asked.

I looked up to see a boy around my age dressed in a suit as he smiled down at me.

"No. I'm fine." I mumbled looking back down at my phone.

"Okay. Can I continue to talk to you and pretend I'm helping? My Aunt is making me work." He laughed.

"Normally I'd be all for helping you out, but I'm just not feeling it Today." I sighed.

"Let me guess." He started as he sat beside me. "Your armpits hurt from walking on these beautiful crutches all day and your outfit choice didn't help much either?"

"How'd you know?" I asked faking surprise.

"I'm an expert." He laughed and I couldn't stop myself from smiling. "I'm also Jake."

"I'm Amari." I said and we shook hands.

"It's too early for prom. Too fancy for homecoming... You're not here shopping for your wedding are you?" He asked.

"No. My sort of aunt's anniversary banquet." I said.

"That sounds sort of fun." He laughed.

"It sort of will be. Hopefully." I laughed. "If I can get a date it'll be fun. If not, I'll be fifth wheeling."

"Well, look no further. You have a date." He held his arms out.

"You want to be my date? You don't even know me." I laughed.

"Sure I do. You're Amari. You have a broken ankle and a killer sense of fashion. What I don't know is your number, but that can change." He smiled at me.

"I have a sprained ankle and you can always give me your number." I smirked.

"Well, you want to do this the easy way or the hard way?" He asked and I looked at him confused. "The easy way is I put my number in your phone. The hard way is I write my number on your arm and pray it doesn't wash off before you have the chance to put it in your phone."

"Let's leave it to faith." I smiled holding my arm out to him.

He smiled at me and gently grabbed hold of my arm and used the pen that was in his shirt pocket to write his number by my elbow.

"The only way that's coming off is if you really want it off. Then I'll know." He said nudging me and I couldn't suppress my laugh. "Now, about that dress."

He helped me up and wrapped his arm around my waist as I threw my arm over his shoulder. He insisted on me leaving my crutches behind and giving my armpits a break.

At checkout

"What a darling young man." Mrs. Brooks nudged me. "You know him?"

"He's going to be my date to your banquet." I blushed.

"You Go!" Mom smiled hugging me. "Keep him around. You two look cute beside one another."

I glanced back at Jake who was struggling to help an old lady, but he kept a smile on his face.

"Maybe..." I mumbled. "It's our turn."

Tyler

"I'm not wearing a matching tux." I groaned.

"I don't want to look like him." Hunter said.

"You two complain more than Amari." Mr. Rose sighed tiredly.

"Because she doesn't have to match with anyone." Hunter said. "I bet if she had a sister, she'd hate it."

"I bet she would." Mr. Rose mumbled looking through suits.

I wonder what she's doing right now. I deftly flipped through suits as my mind wandered to Amari and what she could've been doing. What we could've been doing if we were together.

"What color ties are you boys wearing?" Dad asked typing on his phone.

"Blue." Hunter said.

"I'm wearing red." I said.

"Alright." Dad said. "You'll get the same suit and we'll change the color of the undershirts, flowers, shoes, watches, and whatever else."

Hunter and I both groaned, but we didn't argue. We got our suits and headed out. We stopped for food before heading back to Amari's house. When we got there, the ladies were all in the kitchen. Amari was sitting in the living room typing on her phone.

"What're you two whispering about?" Dad asked as we walked into the kitchen.

"Amari met a boy Today. He's coming to the banquet so we want to get as many slow songs as possible." Mom said.

"You invited this guy to the banquet?" I asked.

"No. Amari did. He's going to be her date." Mrs. Rose said. "What about this one, Maya?"

I walked into the living room and quietly glanced over Amari's shoulder. Jake must've been the guy. If Amari invited him, she must have felt some type of connection with him. She must've felt something. I sat beside her and Amari locked her phone, but before she could say something, I kissed her lips. Amari kisses back for a second before pulling away.

"What's gotten into you?" She asked.

"Nothing. I just changed my mind about waiting until your ankle is better." I said leaning in to kiss her again, but she gently placed her hand on my chest.

"Yeah, but you said I get to choose when and where." She smirked. "I'm not ready now. You'll just have to wait."

And with that, she blew me a kiss and went back to her phone.

"Fine." I nodded. "I'll be ready."

I stood up and began walking away. I peaked at her phone one last time before sighing. She was still texting Jake. Who the hell is he?
