XOXO,

I remembered the day.

April 21, 2012. The day I had been looking forward to for the entire year. The day that every single freshman had been looking forward to the entire year.

The day the school dance was to be held on and the one time that the school faculty had allowed both the freshman year and the sophomore year to have their own dance, because they never did. Of course there was a curfew of ten for both years but it was still better than having no dance night at all.

I remembered how I'd been waiting for a guy to come up to me, make a huge show of chocolate and flowers and ask me to be their date, whilst recounting a line from Romeo and Juliet or even a line from Twilight.

I even went so far as putting on the blush mom had gotten for me, the one I'd refused to put on at all because it made me feel weird. I constantly dreamed about the day my Prince Charming would ask me to be their date. I even went so far as to put on a face to the mystery guy.

Rhys Daniels, the MVP soccer player that was in junior year.

Evan Phillips, the quiet mystery guy that sat in front of me during Math, who asked me for a pencil many times.

Or even Jacob Waters, the school quarterback who even in my dreams was untouchable.

But no one ever did ask me to be their date to the school dance. And just when the dance was one week away, I started to worry.

What if I had no date at all? I couldn't go without a date.

I even had the aquamarine unbalanced dress ready with the matching shoes and the jewelry.

Just when I thought all hope was lost, Frank asked me to be his date. Of course he assured me that we were going only as friends, but I was still glad whatsoever. I was so glad that I didn't even bother to ask him whether Fiona Davidson had really asked him to be her date. At least that was the rumor going around in class, that he was going with Fiona. But he couldn't have been if he was asking me out now, at least that's what I'd thought at the time.

On the night of the dance, mom dropped us off outside the school hall and Frank opened the door for me, making sure the lower half of my dress didn't touch the ground as he led me towards the entrance.

I remembered asking him if I looked okay.

I remembered hearing him chuckle as he looked me up and down. Then he leaned in and without further hesitation, he replied, "You look like Dory from Finding Nemo..." then he smiled genuinely before adding, "but a really good-looking one."

I pathetically punched his arm before we continued on our way towards the entrance.

"It's going to be okay, Liz," he'd whispered to me as soon as I took a silent deep breath, hoping he didn't notice, which he did. "I'm here for you and always will be."

As soon as I got out of my mom's car, I wanted to jump back in and get mom to drive me back home.

What was I thinking, letting mom drag me here?

I couldn't do this. I couldn't and I just...couldn't.

Those words said in those memories were just words said to reassure me. They didn't mean a thing now. They were just words, words long forgotten.

Frank - Taylor - wasn't always going to be there for me. Heck, I wasn't there for him when he needed me there for him. I wasn't there defending him, telling Samantha where she can shove her preconceived notions of who should hang out with who. And I had no right to expect Taylor to be here for me, holding my hands, rubbing them comfortingly as we continued to be there for one another.

There wasn't any Frank this time, holding my hand and pulling me along with them. There wasn't any Frank teasing me in a comforting way and telling me I resembled Dory from Finding Nemo, and there wasn't any Frank there that would ditch another girl just so he could take me as his date because I came up short with my own.

There was only Taylor. The Taylor that as far as I could tell from our previous encounters wanted nothing to do with me, and if he did, it was only to get back at me.

I couldn't blame him of course. I had dug my own grave and hell if I should lay in it now.

"Liz," I heard mom call out from the distance and shook myself out of my cowardliness. "Hurry up, honey. We're already running late and everyone's waiting."

I nodded, somewhat telling her I'll be right there. That's the point. Everyone's waiting. Taylor's waiting.

"I expect you inside in no more than five minutes young lady or I'm sending Frank to drag your ass inside," Zoe warned me, her eyes intently informing me she had no inhibitions on following through with her threats.

I couldn't bring myself to nod or reply as I watched mom follow after Zoe into their mansion of a house.

Only then did the magnificence of the building before me register. The Blackstones had definitely moved up from their quaint three-bedroom house with the treehouse Mr Blackstone had constructed in the backyard.

Their new house was in a Gothic-Tudor style, double-storey and a fountain sat in front of the house, with two pathways, one disappearing around the back. The almost grey paint-job added the effect to its style, reminding me of a small miniature rendition of a castle that had its roots in medieval times. Even from where I was standing, almost leaning against the car, I could picture a modern interior design, one that would undeniably have graced the pages of Forbes if anything.

Not only had Frank transitioned into Taylor, the Blackstones had transitioned into something different. They had become rich. Everything had changed in the two years they'd been away.

I couldn't go in there now. What did I have to show for the two years we hadn't seen each other?

A cheating father who ran away, abandoning his wife and daughter for someone more...exciting? A position as a cheerleader, one of the first sophomores that joined the junior varsity team? An almost back together mother that was desperately trying to reconnect with her daughter? A naive, clueless girlfriend that didn't even notice that her boyfriend had been cheating on her for who knows how long?

Before I could finally decide to hike it the many miles home, or just head over to Brianna's which was only about five houses over, I was enveloped in a tight squeeze from someone.

"What the-" I got cut off as whoever it was tightened their grip around my body and effectively cut off my supply of oxygen. "Exc-c-c-"

"Liiiiiiz! It's been sooo long," a familiar voice exclaimed as they squeezed me again. "I missed youuuu!"

I stopped myself from properly yelling out a call for help as I finally managed to pull away and study the mugger.

Her strawberry blonde locks had grown out since I last saw her, now pulled pack into a ponytail. Gone was the pure innocence in her face, now covered up with a small hue of makeup. She was dressed in a floral blue dress and she was if anything a younger version of Zoe.

"Cassi-" Before I could even finish my words I was enveloped in another hug.

"Liiiiiiz," she dragged out my name again as she continued to squeeze the ever-living daylights out of me. "I missed you so much."

I chuckled as I, too, hugged her. I didn't notice how much I'd missed her until I saw her again. I hadn't been able to properly say goodbye to her before their move two years ago. But then again, I had never had a chance to properly say goodbye to any of them, or even a word of apology to Taylor.

After what felt like forever, she pulled back, smiling brightly with a shadow of a tear trail on her face. I reached out to wipe it. "Why are you crying, silly?"

She chuckled nervously as she brushed her face again, making sure they were free of tears. "It's just so good to see you." She held my arm as if she wasn't really sure I was there in front of her. "Why aren't you coming in?" Concern was written on her face. "Everyone's waiting."

I gave her half a smile despite feeling it was not as genuine as it should be. "I was just..." planning on whether to ditch and go home, or ditch and head to a friend's house, "... about to head in." I couldn't say what I had really been about to do. Not when she was looking at me with genuine affection.

"Well then, come on." Instantly I was being dragged along towards the entrance of the mansion they now lived in, against my own wishes of course.

"Cassie, can you just hol-"

"What's taking you guys so long?"

I literally stopped walking once I noticed Taylor leaning against the door as soon as we walked in.

He was wearing a pair of khaki shorts and a checkered sky and navy blue shirt, buttoned up save for the last two buttons. He looked at Cassie questioningly before his eyes lingered on me for just a second before it returned to his sister.

"We were just catching up," Cassie replied.

"Well, hurry it up. Everyone's waiting," he said, earning a groan from me. He didn't say another word as he turned around and walked down the right hallway.

This was going to be fun, not! And who was this everyone that everyone was talking about?
