Prologue
Present Day: August 13th

I used to be so naïve, like a lovesick puppy who knew everything there was to know about love. I thought I found love during my freshman year of high school. Dean Cooper, the perfect mix of nerd and handsome. He was the whole package, sweet, smart, athletic, I fell head over heels for him. I was in the library struggling to study for my algebra test. I had okay grades but math was my worst enemy. "Need help?" Dean had asked, his smile was wide and his hair messy. I saw him in the hallways, I knew his name, his friends Luke and Jake. They were dating my two best friends, Becca and Jenny. When we met he seemed so perfect, and I fell for that smile so fast.

"Yeah, I've been trying to figure these formulas out for an hour but-" I looked down at my papers with scribbled out equations that didn't make any sense, "-I'm struggling."

Dean sat down in front of me and took my textbook to look it over. "Don't blame yourself, Mr. Brown isn't a good teacher."

My face scrunched up in confusion as I asked, "How did you know Mr. Brown is my teacher?"

He handed me my textbook back and shrugged. "I have the same homework, just a different period." Then he leaned in and showed me how to solve the equation properly. After a while, it suddenly clicked in my brain and I got the hang of it.

"I'm Livia, by the way." I introduced myself even though I knew who he was.

"Yeah, your friends are dating my friends." That meant he knew me too, the boyish smile came back as he said, "Wouldn't it be cool if we date too? Our friend group would be unstoppable."

I laughed, "Are you asking me out?" I'd never been asked out before, especially by someone as attractive as Dean. "Yeah Liv, I am. Are you busy this Friday?"

That was it, the beginning of everything. The moment he walked into that library, the second I said yes. We were so madly in lust that  I mistook it for love. He was the typical high school sweetheart and I would've done anything for him. In three years that we were together, it was amazing, up until the last year. Last year we were seniors, and though I didn't know it, everything was going to change. Most importantly, Dean was going to change. Apart of me wants to turn back time and say no to Dean in that library. Then I remember that everything I went through shaped who I am now. I wouldn't have learned what real love was like. After all, I did meet the love of my life in high school. It just wasn't Dean.

Chapter I-

One Year Ago: August 13th

"We're going to be late." I laugh, lightly pushing Dean off of me.

"It's our senior year, I think we can afford to be late now." Dean continues to kiss me, slowly kissing lower and lower until I'm completely laid back on the bed and his lips are on my stomach. As much as I want him to keep going, I really don't want to be late for my first day.

"Dean, wait," I say, he stops and looks up at me. "I don't want to be late." I tell him honestly, "It's the first day of our last year of high school. I've been looking forward to this year my entire life."

Dean stands up and holds out his hand for me to grab. I take it and we begin walking down to his car. "If it's important to you then it's important to me." He says. We make it to his black Nissan and get inside. As he drives there's soft music playing in the background and he says, "I don't know why you're so excited for this year, it's going to end and then everything will change."

I grab his right hand and give it a gentle squeeze, "It's going to be okay. We can make it long distance for a while, I have faith." He plans to get into Stanford in California. It's far but he wants to be with his mom, not to mention Stanford is an amazing school. With Dean's grades, he'll get in no problem. However, I want to go to a college in New York. It's farfetched, I know but it's my dream.

"I don't know how I feel about being 3,000 miles apart. Are you sure you don't want to just come to California with me? I can take care of us and we can be happy." His offer is one that I've heard a hundred times before. It would be easy to say yes, to give in and be happy with Dean. I know what I want, and that is to be in New York.

"Or, you can come with me to New York. They have amazing schools there and we can still be happy." I reply, even though I know his answer will be no.

Just like I predicted, he shakes his head and squeezes my hand a little tighter. As if a way of saying he wouldn't let me go.

When we get to school I take in a deep breath before walking inside. Suddenly the realization that this is my senior year hits me. After this year I won't ever be back, I will move on from this place forever. I've never had a bad experience at Brookview high, mainly I just kept to my group of friends. When Dean and I met he told me it would be cool to date because our closest friends are dating each other. He was right, the six of us got super close over the last couple of years.

Because we're seniors we got first pick of our lockers. So naturally, we all picked lockers right next to each other. "Huh," I say, looking at my schedule as we walk to our lockers. "My first class is right across from my locker, Mr. Morgan." Once we make it I look up at Dean, "Is he new? I haven't heard that name before."

Dean shrugs just as I hear a familiar voice behind me, "Who's new?" I turn around and see Becca smiling wide at me.

"Bee!" I say as I hug her. I haven't seen anyone besides Dean most of the summer.

"Hey Bee, It's a new teacher apparently," Dean greets while also answering her question.

We call Becca "Bee" for short, ever since she wore a bee costume for Halloween sophomore year. The irony was not lost to us, "Oh cool." She says.

"Where's Jenny?" I ask, noticing that we're short a friend.

"Fashionably late as always." I smile, that sounds just like her.

I reach into Dean's pocket and pull out his schedule, when he gives me a questionable look I explain, "I'm pretty sure we have the same first hour, I'm just checking." When I get the paper to unfold I see that under first period are the words "History," and "Mr. Morgan."

"Oh good, you guys can ogle each other in class too," Bee says in an amused tone.

Just as I am about to reply Jenny shows up with her arm wrapped through Jake's. Jenny is wearing a dark blue skirt that ends just above her knees and a black blouse that shows off just enough cleavage to make just about anyone crazy. Her blonde hair is in perfect curls that bounce on her shoulders like something from a movie. Fashionably late was exactly right.

As soon as she's close enough to us Jenny let's go of Jake and wraps her arms around Becca and I. Her perfume smells sickly sweet like cotton candy. "I missed you!" Jenny says. I know it's directed more towards me than Becca, they asked me to hang out a dozen times. Dean just wanted me all to himself, I feel like we spent practically every day together over the summer.

Jenny pulls away and goes back to Jake, He greets me with a nod. "Luke just wanted a head start to class. Speaking of which, we should get to class. I'll see you guys at lunch." With a small wave, Bee rushes down the hall and to the right until she's out of sight.

"We should go too." Jenny hugs me quickly once more before she and Jake follow in Bee's footsteps.

Within a minute the hallways are clear leaving Dean and me.

"We should go, the bell is going to ring any minute." Even knowing this Dean still puts his hands on my waist. He leans in and kisses my lips softly, slowly, as if we have all the time in the world.

I kiss him back, reaching my hand up to cup his face.

Then the bell rings and an, "Ahem." Comes from behind us. We jump back, looking at a tall man in the doorway of the class we should be in at the moment.

That must be Mr. Morgan, he's so much younger than I was expecting. My guess is mid-twenties. "I might be new but I'm pretty sure there's a no PDA policy in this school." He scolds. "Where is your first class?" He asks without hesitation.

"Um, yours," I mumble.

"Get inside then so we can start." He moves out of the doorway so that we can enter through.

As we walk in I feel all eyes on us. Trying to ignore it, we take our seats and look at our new teacher. Once he's done taking roll, he begins.

"Now that everyone is here let's begin, my name is Mr. Morgan." He announces.

It's now that I take a good look at him. He has a 5 o'clock shadow with deep green eyes and chocolate brown hair. "This year in history, we will be going over many hard topics, as well as focusing on our writing skills. I have pencils up here at my desk but I would prefer it if you brought your own. You don't get a day off in this class and I don't tolerate tardiness or PDA." He glances at Dean and I. I shift uncomfortably in my seat. As he continues to go over the syllabus I notice his lean figure. Mr. Morgan is wearing a very fitted dress shirt with a blue tie and black suit pants. He's very attractive there's no denying that. I just hope he cuts us some slack this year and doesn't continue to be this strict.

Once the class is over I take a deep breath. I don't think Dean liked being called out but we shouldn't have been kissing in the hallways anyway. If I was new I wouldn't break a single rule either.

As we leave, Dean reaches down and presses his lips against mine, I give in for a moment before pulling away. "Don't you think we've gotten in enough trouble Dean?" I ask a little aggressively. My mother was right boys are nothing but trouble.

Dean chuckles a little bit before taking my hand, "No way, fuck that teacher." He says. "Now come on, let's get to our next class." As he leads me away I turn to see Mr. Morgan glaring at the two of us.

Great impression I just made on the first day.
