"Im going to tell you five things that I love about you, because I want you to know.."

JUNE 12, 2013

Mark and Callie got in at work early. "You should start dating. You know get out there again." Callie told her bestfriend as they walk down the hall drinking their morning coffee.

"I don't know Cal, maybe one of these days. I just don't want to play around anymore. I want to be committed to the next person I'm going to love." It was true to his heart, even though no one is taking him seriously. It's been almost two years since he and Lexie broke up. And although they both still had feelings for each other in between, he slept around and Lexie dated Karev for a short time and is now dating Jackson. At some point he had to let it go. And he did. And now he'd reached this point where he's not afraid of commitment anymore, he doesn't want to sleep around like the old Mark Sloan does. He's a new man. He wants to settle. He wants to have the family dream.

If only the world could be kind and it lets him have his dream.

"Yeah I understand. Good on you though, you haven't slept with anyone for the past 3 months. Now that's commitment."

"I definitely should start dating again hey." Mark answers and they both burst into laughter.

The two doctors kept walking to the desk to get their folders for the day where Arizona was filling up a chart. "Hey." Callie smiles to her wife. "Hey you." and the two exchange a quick kiss. "I just dropped Sofia at day care. As usual she's very cute and sweet and all things pretty. Thanks for looking after her last night Mark." Arizona says in her happy voice.

"Well she had a goodnight sleep with her dad last night." Mark says sipping a drink from his coffee.

"She did didn't she. I think you did too." Callie looks at Mark then turns to Arizona.
"Do you think Mark should start dating again? because I think he should." she lowers her voice and whispers to Arizona, "Last night while Sofia was sleeping he made homemade scones, had two tubs of ice cream and ate a bowl of mac n cheese which he left on the counter."

Arizona laughs and gives Mark a worried look. "Yeah maybe going on dates wouldn't be such a bad idea."

"Im fine. Just because you two are happy together doesn't mean I can't be happy alone." Mark again in his defensive tone.

The couple laughs. Callie gets her charts for the day and walks away. "You keep telling yourself that. I gotta check on my patient."

"Im happy!" He shouts at Torres.

"Linda, I look happy right?" Mark asks the middle-aged dark skinned nurse behind the desk, to which she responds with a smile while shaking her head.

"Oh by the way I need your consult for today. I've got a baby born with esophageal atresia."

"Yeah sure page me when you need me."

"Actually, not my baby. I gave it to the Dr. Peters since I have an operation this afternoon. So I'll have her page you."

          "Who's Dr. Peters?"

"Oh you haven't met her? She's the new peds surgeon Owen hired from North Carolina, very smart, and nice, very pretty too."

          "Very pretty huh."

"Did you hear me say smart and nice?"

"Very pretty was all you had to say Robbins." He smirks as the blonde walks away from him.

"And you say you're happy alone." Linda mockingly says to the blue eyed surgeon while she continues to type on the computer behind the desk.

Arizona caughts up to Savannah walking through the hall. "Hey!"

"Hey Arizona, how are you?" Savannah asks the surgeon walking beside her.

"Good good. Just wanted to remind you of the 3 month old patient you have this afternoon. The family's flying from Chicago this morning."
"Oh yep. 3 month old with esophageal atresia, I was just reading his file."
"Great. Well I already spoke with Dr. Sloan, ENT attending and head of plastics, and he said he's happy to do the surgery with you this afternoon. I told him that you'll page once you needed him."
"Duly noted. Thank you for that."
"Great. Well I have to go. Have fun on your second day!" The cheerful pediatric surgeon rolls off with her skates.

  ❀

Mark walks in the conference room holding a container with the scones he made last night.  He sees Derek and Owen. He opens the container and puts it on the desk and grabs one. "Homemade maple-ginger scones. Try." He shoves it at Derek's face

"Oh, no, no, no," He raises his right hand to a stop. Mark give him a serious look.

"Really. I just had a big breakfast." Mark sits on the desk holding the scone that Derek refused to have.

"The scone's a very tough pastry to make. You have to be exact with the ingredients, the baking temperature..."

"Hey, how's Mer? -" Owen interrupts the scone recipe telling of Mark and asks Derek.

"Oh, she's good. No cravings just yet.-"
          "Really?"

"All right. I get it. I'm a bore. But Avery's doing all my surgeries, and I'm taking up cooking to keep my mind sharp for when the next big case rolls in."

"Yeah, you keep telling yourself that." Derek says while swinging in his chair reading an article.

"I'm serious. Although today might be a good day. Arizona has me doing a surgery with the new peds surgeon... who'm I hear is very pretty." He looks at the guys with a cheeky grin but Owen looks at him seriously.
" Sloan. Don't do anything stupid. She's a good friend. I'm serious." Owen tells the surgeon sitting on the desk.
          " I won't. I'm a new man! who bakes scones. I'm a good man!"

Derek's pager beeped and he took a quick look. "That's 911. I gotta go. See you gentlemen." Derek soon took off from the conference room. Mark stands up and sits beside Owen holding the scone container still not letting it go.

"Try a scone. You know you want to." Owen takes the scone and takes a bite.

         "Attaboy."

"Mmm." He nods to his surprise. Mark was right. The scone was great. Mark's pager beeped. It was the new surgeon. Finally.

❀

Savannah fills up the chart as she waits for the plastics surgeon on the counter near the patient's room. Mark sees the petite doctor standing in front of the desk with a dark brown wavy hair. "You must be Dr. Peters, new pediatrics attending." He talks as he walks closer to the doctor. Savannah hears the deep but confident voice from behind her and turns with a smile. Mark's smile grew when he realized who the doctor was.
"Mac n' cheese." Savannah also shocked to see the same guy from the grocery last night, "Hey, Two tubs of ice cream." She answers and they both laugh. Mark lifts his hand for a hand shake.
"Mark Sloan, plastics. very nice to meet you again." Savannah laughs as she exchange a hand shake with the blue eyed doctor.
"Savannah Peters, peds." The two continues to handshake, somehow lost at their eyes and their smiles for about two seconds. They break off and Savannah gets the folder from the desk.

"Uhmm we should go and meet the patient. They got in earlier and I already had a quick chat to them." Savannah leads Mark to the patient's room.

"Hey guys." Savannah opens the door with a smile.

"Hey Dr. Peters. Kids say hi." The mother carrying the baby told her two other kids who seemed to be 3 and 5. "Hi Dr. Peters."
"Hi Sofie and Kevin." The surgeon waves at the kids who were sitting on the edge of the bed watching tv.

"This is Dr. Mark Sloan. He will be doing the procedure today. And this is Marriane and Nate Boswell."

"Hi, Mark Sloan very nice to meet you." The parents and the surgeon exchange a handshake. Marriane hands the baby to Savannah.

Savannah softly touches the baby's face, smiling. "This is baby Jacob, a 3 month old with esophageal atresia. Hi little Jacob. Look at you so handsome." Savannah softly touches the cheek of the baby. She continues

"His vitals are stable and he is ready for pre-op." Mark looks at the doctor carrying the baby.

"He just seems so little. I mean, I thought it could wait." The concerned mother says as Savannah hands Jacob back to her.

"I understand, but I assure you that now is the right time." Mark pauses and continues looking at the concerned parents. "By fixing those muscles early, his maxilla, his whole upper jaw, will have a real shot at forming properly."

"But he'll have a scar?" Nate asks the surgeon.

"Well, I'm gonna do what's called a millard rotation so that we don't risk the lip shortening over time." Mark answers while the parents look at each other.

Trying to ease their worry Savannah explains the procedure.

"It means that Dr Sloan rotates the tissue and creates a "Z" shaped scar instead. The "Z" shape gives the tissue more elasticity, which results in greater flexibility and restoration of the cupid's bow."

Mark continues. "It shouldn't even be noticeable. Then he'll look even more handsome than he does right now, if that's possible. He is a pretty handsome guy, isn't he?" Mark steps in to take a closer look at the baby.

"He certainly is." Savannah answers with a smile. The parents' faces eased.

"You want to wait here with your mama while Dr. Peters and I go get you all set up? Yeah?" Mark whispers close to the baby.

"We'll come back this afternoon and get everything prepared for you." says Mark.

"Thank you Dr. Sloan and Dr. Peters." Marianne expresses her gratitude. The doctors smile.

"See you guys." Savannah says as they walk out of the room.

Kevin the five year old kid runs to the door and quickly catches up with the doctors. He pulls Savannah's white coat. "Kevin!" His dad runs after him.

"Oh it's okay." Savannah looks at the dad and bends down to the five year old standing in front of her. "Hey Kev, what's up?" she asks.

"Will my baby brother be okay? You'll fix him?" Savannah smiles to the cutest older brother she has seen. "Yes, he'll be okay. You see this guy standing next to me, well I heard that he's the best of the best. So him and I will take care of baby Jacob. Okay?"

"Okay. but I don't even know you and you know nothing about Jacob."

"Kev. Come on." His Dad tries to pull him in.

"No it's alright I've got it." She turns back to the boy, "Well why don't you tell me five things about baby Jacob then you can ask me and Dr. Sloan anything you'd like."

"Well Jacob is our baby brother, he's a boy, he sleeps a lot.. that's three things so two more." He looks at his fingers counting to five, he continues. "he cries when he's sad and he's favourite song is Twinkle, Twinkle little star." Mark, Savannah and Nate laugh.

"Noted. We'll never forget about that. Do you want to ask us any questions?"

Kevin nods and asks "What's your favourite food?"

"Well I love pasta. Anything that has pasta, I'll be down for that." Savannah answers.  "How about you?" Kevin points to Sloan. He bends down to kid. "Burgers. definitely burgers." Kevin smiles. "I like burgers too. My mom makes the best burgers." Savannah and Mark continues to laugh at the cutest kid they'd seen.

"Come on Kev, Dr. Sloan and Dr. Peters need to go so they can help Jacob."

"Okay. Bye Dr. Sloan. By Dr. Peters." The kid waves goodbye as his dad holds him on his shoulders. "See you buddy." Savannah answers as both her and Mark stand up.

Mark looks at the doctor and can't help but admire her. Very nice, very smart, very pretty, very kind. He thought to himself.

Alex finds Meredith, Cristina and Savannah sitting together during lunch at the cafeteria. He quickly sits with them while the three girls laugh their hearts out.

"What's so funny?" He asks.

"Oh I was just telling them this funny dance Derek did last night just to make Zola stop crying." Meredith answers Alex laughing as she takes a sip of her drink.

"How's your second day?" He turns to Savannah.

"Im doing a surgery with Mark Sloan this afternoon."

"Ooh McSteamy and McPretty doing a surgery together." Cristina says as she takes a bite from her salad.

"McSteamy?" Savannah asks.

"It's these nicknames we made when we we're interns. Derek's McDreamy and Sloan's McSteamy." Meredith answers as the four of them laugh.

"He's probably gonna hit on you today at some point." Alex says laughing. Savannah looks at Cristina sitting across to her. "I'm surprised he didn't ask you before." Cristina says sarcastically making Savannah shake her head and the four of them laugh.

Mark looks at the table where Meredith, Cristina, Alex and the new peds surgeon were sitting. "Are you even going to take a bite of that sandwich?" Derek asks his bestfriend sitting next to him.

"She's pretty. Its not even that, she's nice. Like warm nice. I think I might ask her out." Mark says before taking his first bite of his lunch.

"No you won't."

"Why not?"

"She's new here. She doesn't need a fling that'll last two weeks. Plus Karev and Owen will probably kill you if you screw that up."

"Wow. I already told you. I'm a new man. I'm not in for a fling, I'd like to get to know her." He takes a glance at Savannah who was laughing. "I know Owen's friends with her, what does Karev got to do with her?"

"Mer said they grew up together."

"You ready?" Mark looks beside him and asks the peds surgeon while he was scrubbing his hands.

"Yes. Im always a bit more nervous when its with babies who haven't even reached a year you know. They haven't lived yet." Savannah answers scrubbing her hands looking at the operating room.

"Well you'll do great. We'll do great." Mark smiles at the nervous surgeon.

Mark and Savannah finished the surgery and found the family seated in the waiting area. "Mr. and Mrs. Boswell." Mark says. The parents stood up carrying their children. "The surgery went well. Dr. Sloan was able to fix everything." Savannah informs them with the hugest smile on her face.

"Oh thank you! Thank you so much. Thank you Dr. Sloan. Dr. Peters." Marianne holding Sofie who was fast asleep in her arms couldn't help but cry in relief knowing that her baby was doing well.

"He's still asleep but he is doing extremely very well. His vitals are stable." Mark informs them of Jacob's condition.

"Thank you. Thank you so much." Nate who was also crying hugs Sloan.

"I couldn't have done it without Dr. Peters." Mark smiles to Savannah.

"Thank you Dr. Peters." Nate gives Savannah a thankful hug.

"Would you like to see him?" Savannah tells the family.

Mark and Savannah stood outside the room looking at the happy family. "Thank you for helping my little brother. Dr. Peters and Dr. Sloan." Kevin approaches Savannah. She bends down to him, "No worries bud." Kevin walks back to the room.

"You're good with kids. You have one?" Mark turns to the doctor.

Savannah keeps her smile trying to fix her eyes on the family. "No kids. How old's your baby? I saw the diapers last night."

"She's 18 months, about to turn two. The cutest age. She makes these sentences that doesn't make any sense but she's still the cutest kid."

"That is a cute age." Savannah answers.

"I'm not married by the way. I had her with my best friend who's a lesbian. So there's three of us co-parenting. Which doesn't really make me look good..." Mark tries to explain his situation to the doctor when he's just trying to tell him he's single.

Savannah laughs. "No need to explain to me."

Mark, nervous to ask the beautiful doctor next to him. "You did great today by the way."

         "Thank you. You did too."

"Savannah, would you like to get drinks with me sometime?"

Savannah looks at Mark. "Mark, I'm sorry. I don't think that's a good idea. Plus i gotta stay for a 20 hour shift. I don't finish til' 6am tomorrow."

"Yeah that's okay I gotta stay til 6 too actually." Mark smiles. It was a long shot. He knew she'd probably say no but he also didn't want to not try.

The hours went by and before Savannah knew it, it was time to go home. She got changed and went back to Jacob's room to check on the baby. "Hi, just checking before I leave to make sure everything is alright." She speaks softly to Marianne who was carrying baby Jacob. "Yes he's doing well. He just woke up for his feed. Nate took the kids home. Thank you so much Dr.
