AUGUST 3, 2013

It was a late Saturday morning and it has been already a busy day on the pit. The hospital has a big trauma coming in. The doctors scurry through the halls of the hospital trying to get to the ER as fast as they could.

"A tanker blew?" Derek asks Owen as he meets him and the other doctors in the hall.

"It didn't blow. Gas tanker slammed into an S.U.V. on the I-5. Caused a huge pileup. No telling how many traumas are coming in. We're already packed today so we need all the hands we could get." Owen continues.

Savannah who also got paged due to the accident sees Derek, Owen, Cristina, Richard, Shane and Mark walking through the halls.

"I'm here. I heard a tanker blew? How bad?" She asks before tying her hair up, slightly catching Mark's eyes landing on her. Today was the day. And thankfully both of them weren't freaking out or nervous anymore. Somehow seeing each other through the week have made them both excited to spend time with each other this weekend. Mark catches a glimpse of her fixing her hair and even though they were walking fast through the halls and adrenaline has kicked in, he couldn't help but admire the simplicity and beauty of the surgeon.

"A tanker did not blow, it didn't. But it did cause a lot of accidents. Its gonna be a long day." Owen answers while they started to wear their yellow gowns.

"Here, I got you." Mark says to Savannah, she turns around so he could tie her gown from the back.

"Thank you." They share a quick smile before all of them headed quickly outside the ER glass doors. The noise from the ambulances started coming in and each doctor hurried to them.

The red doors of the first ambulance bursts open as the paramedic explains the situation,

"Cam Miller, restrained passenger in a vehicle T-boned on its side. Vital signs stable. G.C.S. is 14. He's been disoriented."

"Whoa!" Owen, Shane and Richard coughed from smelling the strong scent of gas coming from the ambulance.

"Yeah, the tanker's been leaking gas all over the road. We did a primary decontamination on scene, but we had to get him outta there."

The paramedic continues while Richard took the patient's chart and he and Shane pushed the gurney through the ER.

"Okay, no open flames, no smokers, no use of cauteries. Be safe, people." Owen instructs everyone.

Another ambulance opens, Derek and Mark attend to the patient straight away. The paramedic hands the chart to Mark while Derek checked her eyes.

"Rachel Cruse, 34. Restrained passenger in a car with front-end damage. Closed head injury. B.P. 110 over 70. Pulse 95."

"Where's my brother? His wife? Who has Paul?" Derek looks up to the paramedic.

"I told her they're right behind us" He answers.

"Rachel! Rachel, I'm here." The patient from the third ambulance shouts as he was pushed out by the paramedic.

"Paul Cruse, 30. Restrained driver with major intrusion into his area of the vehicle.
Bruises to the chest. B.P. 90 over 60. Pulse, 120." Savannah and Cristina attend to him, Cristina taking the chart, Savannah puts her stethoscope to hear his heartbeat.

"Where's my wife? Where's Elyse?" The patient asks Savannah.

"She's on her way. Don't worry."

"Please take care of her and our baby. She's pregnant. We're having a baby." The husband pleads to the doctor.

"I've got him, you go." Cristina says as she pulls the gurney and Savannah heads to the fourth ambulance. The doors open and she takes the chart from the paramedic.

"Elyse Cruse, 28, 37 weeks pregnant, Restrained passenger in a car, hypotensive, with abdominal bruising and second-degree burns on her right arm."

"Hunt! Page O.B.!" She shouts and he gives her a nod.

          "Right away."

"Hi I'm Dr. Peters. Can you tell me your name?" Savannah asks the patient softly while she checks her eye coordination.

          "My name's Elyse. Elyse Cruse."

          "Okay, Elyse —"

"But I don't care about me. Please just do whatever you can to save my baby. Just save my little girl." The mother cries to the doctor.

"How about I save you both?"

          "Yeah, that would be great."

          "Okay, let's go."

Savannah looks at her watch, it was already 6 at night. She had done a surgery with Robbins to make sure Elyse and her baby were fine and a few too many consults after that. She yawns before walking inside her patient's room when she sees Mark sitting beside her patient, both of them laughing together.

"Oh Dr. Peters, have you met my very handsome plastic surgeon, Dr. Sloan?" The pregnant patient teases the pediatric surgeon.

"I have met him." Savannah gazes at Mark, he smiles to the burn from the patient's arm that he was checking on. Even though he didn't look up to see her face, he could feel her looking at him and that was enough to make him feel whatever his stomach and heart were feeling.

"He's going on a date tonight. He's pretty excited about it." The patient tells the pediatric surgeon not knowing that it was her he was going on a date with.

"Oh is he. That's nice to hear. What are you doing for your date Dr. Sloan?" She ask while looking at the chart trying to fight back her smile.

"I can't tell you. She'll have to find out herself." He answers confidently before winking at surgeon.

"Okay, it has to be her you're going out with right? You guys would make such a cute couple." The patient looks at both of her doctors standing on the opposite sides of her bed. The three of them laugh.

"How are we feeling Elyse? I just wanted to check in on you and make sure you're alright. Dr. Robbins did a wonderful job today."

"I'm feeling good Dr. Peters. So we will be okay?"

"You and you're baby will just be fine. We just have to keep a close look on you tonight to be sure."

"Thank you Dr. Peters. And have you heard about my husband? Paul?"

"I heard his surgery with Dr. Yang was successful. He's stable but still in recovery. Don't worry, I'll tell them to update you from time to time tonight." The doctor smiles at the patient while she checked her stats.

Mark was walking at the bridge with a smile on his face when he sees Owen approaching him.

"Hey man. Here before I almost forget. Just bring it back by midnight." Owen hands him the keys to his truck.

"It's like I'm Cinderella and you're my fairy godmother." He takes the keys, both of them laughing. Owen taps him on the shoulder.

          "You guys have fun tonight!"

"Thanks Hunt." He continues to walk through the halls of the hospital when he sees his date walking. He rushes til he gets to her.

"How's your day been going?" He asks making her sigh with a smile on her face.

"Long and busy and bloody. Yours?"

"Long and busy and a lot of burns." They both laugh.

"We've been so busy. Will we make it for our dinner reservations?" She asks him while they both stop at the nurses' desk to return her patients' charts.

"We'll make it." He leans to the desk, still smiling at her.

"Well I'm off by two hours." She says as she fill out some forms.

"I'm finished by then too. I'll wait. You take your time Peters." Mark walks away from the doctor. Savannah looks at him while he walked away. Somehow her face didn't turn red anymore and god was she thankful for that.

Somewhere between the week that has gone by, something happened and she just got used to seeing Mark around and that goofy smile on his face, she'd get excited when they walk past each other or she'd catch him looking at her, or he just pops out of nowhere to give her a cup of tea. He makes her feel excited. Not scared or anxious. And today, she felt ready. Ready to let him in.

It was already 8 o'clock at night and both Savannah and Mark have finished their shifts. Mark went off to pick up Sofia from daycare and drop her off back to Callie's and Arizona's apartment since Callie was home from her TED talks trip and Robbins was still on-call.

Savannah's phone vibrates from her pocket while she walked inside the attendings' lounge.

Mark Sloan
Just had to drop Sofia at
home. Be there soon to pick
you up Peters. Don't run.
Wait for me. ;)

Savannah chuckles softly from reading the surgeon's message. She takes off her white coat and gets her towel from the cabinet to take a quick shower.

She wore a new set of uniform to get ready with. Looking at the mirror she had just finished fixing the waves from her hair and was now doing her make up. A few minutes later and she was almost ready. All she had to do left was put her mascara on and change to her dress.

She pulls out the mascara from her make up bag when her pager suddenly beeps. She puts the bag down quickly and sees 911 Cruse.

She quickly leaves the attendings lounge and runs to the patient's room. She sees the nurses attending to the pregnant patient who was crying out of pain. She turns to the monitor.

"I'm right here Elyse! Everything's gonna be okay. Abdominal tenderness to palpation. Damn it. She's having decels."

"Her B.P. is dropping." The nurse tells her.

"Okay, Elyse, stay with me. Okay? Just try to stay with me." She comforts the patient.

          "Is my baby okay?"

"We're gonna roll you on your side right now, okay?"

"You can't hear my baby's heart?"

"Try not to worry. Page Robbins!" She tells the nurse.

          "We've paged her already."

          "Well page her again! Now!"

          "Come on. Come on."

Alex walks past the room and sees Savannah and her patient.

          "What's happening? Sav, she's bleeding."

"What?" Savannah says looking behind the patient.

"Damn it. The cord's prolapsed." She says.

"We need to secure it." Alex put some gloves on.

          "What is happening?"

"Your baby's umbilical cord has dropped, and it's now trapped against her body, and that's why she's in distress." Savannah explains.

"Ma'am, we need to keep the cord inside so your baby doesn't lose any more oxygen. To do that, I'm gonna have to place my hand inside. I'm really sorry, but it's gonna hurt a lot, okay?" Alex tells the crying mother.

"Here hold my hand Elyse. Its gonna be okay." Alex places his hand inside to fix the cord making Elyse scream for mercy.

"We need to get this baby out. Where the hell is Robbins!?" Alex says looking at Savannah.

"We paged her twice already." The nurse answered.

"Page her again. Page O.B. Tell them to meet us in the OR! Elyse, we're going to surgery right now to take care of you and your baby. Okay? Let's go people!" Savannah instructs them while she, Alex and the other nurse pushed the patient out of the room to rush her to the OR.

"Crap. You look pretty. And you're still here. What about your date?" Alex says looking at his best friend while they rushed their patient through the elevator.

"Mark can wait. I hope. This baby can't." She looks at him guiltily hoping that she didn't just screw up the chances that she and Mark could've had.

Mark had arrive at the hospital to pick up Savannah, looking sharp and dapper wearing a blue gray polo underneath his navy suit. He looks at his watch, 9:10, just the perfect time to leave for what he has planned for them.

He heads to the attendings' lounge but when he got there there was no sign of the doctor except the open make up bag and the black dress that hung on her cabinet. He takes his phone out to call her.

"Im here. I'm sorry. I had a patient that was coding. What happened?" Arizona comes barging in the operating room where Alex and Savannah have already cut open the patient.

"There's tenderness in her abdomen and the cord has already prolapsed. We have to get her baby out Robbins. The cord's already dropped. Its not good." Savannah explains to the doctor.

"Alright lets do it." Arizona steps in the surgery and proceeds to deliver the baby when a phone rings. The nurse checks.

"It's for you Dr. Peters, its Dr. Sloan, shall I answer?" Arizona looks at Savannah realizing that she had her date with Mark tonight.

"Please. Tell him I got a 911 and I'll be there as soon as I can. Thank you." Savannah says not breaking her eyes from the patient.

          "I'm sorry Savannah." Arizona apologises.

"It was a 911." She says looking at the surgeon.

Mark got off the phone from talking to the nurse. He felt his smile fade away and his excitement leave his body but a part of him understood that this is the job. He decides to stay in the attendings' lounge and wait til' the surgery was done.

An hour later through the surgery Arizona delivers the baby.

"Alright, the baby is out. Karev take her please. Make sure she's breathing and she get's oxygen." Alex takes the baby from Arizona while Savannah switches to the patient's abdomen.

"Alright let's explore the abdomen." Savannah says before the monitor starts to beep.

"She's losing too much blood. Elyse you have to stay with me. Come on!"

"Let's get more lap pads here!"

Two hours have gone and Mark still hasn't heard from Savannah. It was already 11:30. Thirty more minutes til he had to return the truck to Owen. Even if she was here and they tried, they won't make it back by midnight.

He stands up from the sofa exhaling his disappointment. He finds Owen in his office.

"You're back early." Owen says looking up from the desk when he saw Mark walk in the room.

          "We never made it."

          "What?"

"The princess got called in for a 911, she's still in surgery." Mark gives him back the keys.

          "I'm sorry about that."

"Me too." He exhales nodding his head before leaving the room.

"Alright. Patient is stable. Great job tonight everyone." Arizona tells the medical team around her after finishing their surgery. Savannah smiles of relief knowing that the new mother and her baby were going to be okay.

She glances at the clock 12:40 am. That's our date over. You messed it up Savannah. She exhales feeling like she lost in a game before heading to the scrub room to scrub out.

She opens the sink and starts scrubbing her arms with Arizona standing next to her.

"Hey Savannah, look I know that this surgery was an emergency and you needed to be here. I'm sorry that you had to miss your date. I'm sure you were both looking forward to it." Arizona looks at the surgeon with soft eyes, she couldn't help but feel like she ruined their night.

"It happens. Im happy they're both safe now." Savannah continued to wash her hands.

"You know Mark, he hasn't removed that annoying smile on his face and trust me I haven't seen him like that and its kinda freaking me out."

Savannah couldn't help but chuckle to the thought of him. Arizona takes a cloth from the sink to wipe her hands.

"I used to not like him. Even being my kid's dad. But when I got to know him, he became one of my best friends and he's nice, and kind and patient. He's a good guy. I hope you get the chance to know him." Arizona smiles to the surgeon before tossing the cloth in the bin and saying goodbye to her.

Savannah thought of what she just heard. Her stomach feeling like there were a hundred butterflies flying inside. The thing is, she did. She did want that chance to get to know him. If only he'd let her again after tonight.

Walking through the hall of the operating rooms, she thought of an idea. Probably a stupid idea but she wanted to try anyway. For some reason she wanted to try anyway.

She takes out her phone from her pocket and calls Mark but he doesn't pick up. It's was already 1 in the morning. She breathes out as she makes a different call. After hanging up she dials Mark's number again. She knew that Mark won't pick up, but something inside of her hoped that he would answer her call.

This is Dr. Mark Sloan, Sorry I can't pick up your call right now. Leave me a message and I'll try to get back to you as soon as I can..

"Hey Mark. I know you're probably very mad at me right now. I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. Please don't think I stood you up. I didn't know that I'd be paged for surgery, I hope you understand, you've been very patient and I really appreciate that. Anyway, if you still wanted to get a late dinner with me or an early breakfast, I've made reservations a Joe's. I know its 1 o'clock but I'm going there right now. I'll wait. I hope you come. Im very sorry. And for what its worth, I was looking forward for tonight."

Savannah heads to the attendings lounge to get ready. She puts on her black fitting dress and her black heels. She breathes out while standing infront of the mirror as she tucks her wavy brown hair behind her
