Chapter Five-"Mission Get Cool"~Part Two

Parties were never my thing. I remembered once, when I was six, Kaley the prettiest girl in kindergarten was having a ballerina party and everyone had to dress up like they were going to the Swanlake. My mother helped me get dressed and obviously she thought that I’d make the best princess ever, what she didn’t know was that Kaley was the only one who was supposed to be a princess and well, the party ended in tears from both princesses.

Teenage parties were to say the least…different. Loud music, dark rooms and tons of alcohol which would take days just to get rid of the smell; there was dancing and kissing and tons of people hooking up in parents’ bedrooms and of course there would be mishaps with the cops. So you can see why I never really thought that parties were my sort of thing?

Don’t get me wrong, Juliet got invited to tons of parties and of course she’d always extend the invitation to me but I mean…really? Me in my baggy jeans and bulky shirts, thick glasses and bad hair, was I really going to embarrass myself by pitching up at a party where no one would even notice me and the only fun I’d be having was serving people drinks?

Except, here I was, standing in front of the house of Chris Martin, the school’s football captain and senior hot shot and of course with my luck, Jessica’s ex-boyfriend. Chris’s house was huge, and I’m talking about ‘I own a mansion that resembles a White House’ huge. Three storeys high, with lights all over the place, music that could be heard throughout the whole neighbourhood and crowds of people that looked as if they were at some celebrity VIP party.

My jaw dropped.

“Vivienne, why do you look so shocked?” Amanda asked, tugging at my arm and leading me towards the front door.

Sean turned around and smirked, “She hasn’t been to a party before.”

Juliet rolled her eyes in response, “She chooses not to go.”

Amanda turned to me, ignoring Juliet and Sean, “Well trust me Vivienne, the parties that I’ve been to back at my school makes this one look like a sleepover in comparison.”

“What parties have you been to?” I asked in shock.

Amanda giggled, “Oh you know.”

I waited for her to continue but she didn’t. Who was Amanda really? Was she some slutty girl in love with Sean or was she a creepy rich girl who thought that diet Coke tasted better than regular? Or maybe she was just a regular teenager that actually knew what kissing boys felt like? The most probable thing that made sense was that I was just making excuses to not really focus on the fact that we were getting dangerously closer to the front door of mansion.

Breathe, calm yourself down and breathe Viv. It’s just a regular party; you know the kind with teenagers from school and maybe some from college. The type where girls get to sleep with their boyfriends because it’s a stranger’s house and their parents won’t ever find out, unless the girl gets pregnant and then of course there would be major problems and tears and-

The door swung open.

“Sean! My man and I see you brought ladies,” Chris Martin shouted.

Chris Martin was extremely big. Not in a Kung-Fu wrestler sort of huge, just really big muscles that could crush you into a pulp if he tried to hug you huge. In a way, he was a lot like his house, really big. Chris had dark hair, brown and gelled back sexily with amazing blue eyes that were his secret to getting girls. Don’t ask me how I knew this but I blame Juliet. The girl knew everyone’s story.

“Jules,” Chris breathed out, and I could have sworn that he blushed a little.

Whoa, did Chris like my best friend? The huge jock that went through girls like food was blushing at my best friend? I made a mental note to talk to Juliet about it later when Chris turned to look at Amanda. Unlike with Juliet, he didn’t blush but he did smile seductively to which Juliet mildly glared at. Yup, they definitely liked each other.

“And you must be Amanda,” Chris greeted Amanda with a killer smile.

Amanda nodded, twirling a strand of her brown hair before replying, “That’s me.”

Finally, Chris turned to me.

His reaction was well…flattering I suppose.

“And you are?” Chris asked, a little wide eyed.

Sean answered before I could, “Meet Vivienne Lanter, or as she prefers to be called, Viv.”

Chris frowned slightly but smiled after a few seconds, “Aren’t you that nerdy chick from school, not that you look nerdy now…”

I felt my cheeks heating up in a full blown blush, “Y-Yeah.”

“Well it’s great to see you out of school,” Chris replied in a suggestive tone before he turned to the rest, “come on in, the party is about to kick it up a notch.”

Sean entered, following straight after Chris with Amanda and Juliet walking side by side, leaving me to enter the house last. It was like stepping into another world completely. The house was darkly lit, filled with grinding bodies and laughter all around. Cheerleaders were wrapped around jocks, cheering them as they chugged down beer. A few people stood at the corners of the house, smoking and taking swings at what looked more like spiked drinks than normal. A few couples lingered in the hallways, making out shamelessly of who watched and of course there were the few people who just talked aimlessly.

All in all, it was a full blown party.

“Welcome to my humble abode,” Chris yelled over the music, “over there are the drinks,” he pointed towards a kitchen, “over there is the cellar, find your food there and upstairs is,” he wiggled his eyebrows suggestively, “anything you want it to be.”

Amanda squealed in delight, “I’m totally gonna get me something to loosen up, you guys want anything?”

Sean shrugged, “I’ll come with you.”

They both turned to me and Juliet, but I shook my head. There was no way that I was going to get drunk tonight, my mother would not only kill me but she would make sure that I never saw civilisation again. Sean shrugged again, shooting me a smirk before following Amanda towards the kitchen where I could hear laughter which sounded oddly familiar. Ignoring the twisting in my gut, I turned to Juliet who was grinning at me widely.

“OH MY GOD VIV!” she yelled excitedly, “Your first proper party!”

I couldn’t help but join in her enthusiasm, “Yeah, it’s my first party so let’s cut loose and go wild!”

Chris suddenly piped in from out of nowhere, “Oh you two should definitely use the room on the third floor, the last one on the hallway.”

Juliet rolled her green eyes, “Chris, we’re not going to have a threesome with you.”

My mouth twisted in disgust as I watched Juliet and Chris bicker over why a threesome would be bad or not, frankly the more I stood and listened to them, the more sick I felt. After what felt like years of listening to them, I excused myself to go and get something to drink. Ignoring the wolf whistles and the blush that seemed to enjoy staining my cheeks, I pushed through the throngs of people and made my way into the kitchen.

If you got rid of all the drunken teenagers and shrieking girls, the kitchen would have been a masterpiece. Large, filled with five-star equipment and decorated like it belonged in a magazine. But right at that moment, the kitchen looked like a train had hit it. Guys, majority of which belonged to the football team were standing around a counter that held buckets of beers and drinks of all colours and sizes, were chugging drinks one after the other and girls who looked desperate enough to drop their underwear if asked, surrounded them, giggling and cooing.

I rolled my eyes in disgust before walking to one of the fridges, looking for anything that didn’t have any alcohol in it. I bent over, reaching for the back of the fridge after spotting a pack of Cokes when I felt something slap my butt.  I shrieked, jumping up and hitting my head on the inside of the fridge. I heard laughter behind me, and ignoring the blush of embarrassment; I spun around and stared at the meathead who thought that slapping my butt would be cool.

I gulped when my eyes came into contact with dazzling green ones on a face that caused me to change my whole appearance and cry myself to sleep watching the Titanic. Yes ladies and gentlemen, I was staring at Matt Jacobs, the guy who had broken my heart and embarrassed me in front of Jessica Hubert the girl who would spread her legs for anything walking on two legs and had a penis.

“You look hot,” Matt slurred, leaning closer to me.

I frowned, shoving Matt off of me, “And you look drunk.”

A few guys ‘oohed’ behind us and I could feel eyes on me. Oh God, I was going to pass out any second. I swallowed a gulp and glared at Matt, raising an eyebrow in annoyance. Crossing my arms, I spoke, “What do you want?”

Matt grinned, “How about I show you one of the rooms upstairs and you and I do something biological?”

“Like dissecting you?” a voice suddenly piped in from behind.

I turned to look up at my rescuer, Dave Peterson, looking as handsome as ever and glaring at Matt. I let out a breath of relief, feeling my heart rate slow down and the blush in my cheeks to slowly fade away. I wasn’t going to get molested by Matt and more importantly I wasn’t going to be laughed at by these drunken jocks and desperate girls. Dave continued to glare at Matt until he muttered a profanity and slumped towards the nearest girl.

I turned to Dave and sent a smile, “Thanks.”

“No problem,” Dave replied with a smile of his own, “wanna get out of here?”

I nodded gratefully, following him into what was the living room, now changed into a dance floor with couches on the sides of the room. Dave flashed me a grin, before leading me towards one of the couches, furthest away from the loud music and dancing bodies. Following Dave’s lead, I plopped down onto the couch and leaned back with a sigh. Maybe I was right, partying life wasn’t really cut out for me.

“Well you look different,” Dave stated.

I felt another blush rising to my cheeks. God, how many times did I have to blush to realise that I wasn’t going to ever feel comfortable?

“Uh…y-yeah,” I stuttered.

“A good different,” Dave answered.

I smiled slightly, “Thanks.”

Finally! Something normal out of your mouth! Pat your back there Viv, you’re actually getting the hang of this-

“So I didn’t know that you were into parties,” Dave started, “and I mean what happened back there was really proof.”

I frowned, “Proof of that I don’t get out much?”

Dave smiled sheepishly, “Well I meant that uh…lots of girls know not to go into the kitchen alone, especially here.”

Oh. Oh! It finally clicked why Sean offered to walk Amanda to the kitchen back when she wanted something to drink, and here I was starting to think that Sean liked Amanda or something…not that I minded really. He was Sean Gregory, school’s bad boy and all round player, not like I had any interests in him at all.

“That makes sense,” I mumbled.

Dave laughed softly, causing me to smile. Leaning closer to me, Dave spoke, “You know about Prom and everything?”

I nodded, “Yeah that was like-”

A shrill voice interrupted me.

“Look who decides to show up? Miss She-thinks-she-can-steal-my-title,” Jessica spat, sending me a glower.

I froze in my seat, unable to reply. Was this night going to get any more worse?

“Viv’s not stealing anybody’s title, least of all yours,” Dave protested.

For the second time that night, I smiled in relief at Dave. God, why had I never noticed him before? He was sweet and didn’t seem to be putting on a fake act around me so why hadn’t I noticed him before? Because you were interested in Matt you idiot! The stupid boy that hurt you so badly that you skipped out on eating your mother’s special lasagne, was that not a clear enough reason for you to not notice Dave before?

“Dave is that right? Jessica asked, batting her eyelashes.

Dave merely nodded.

“Well you should know that Vivienne here,” Jessica spat in hatred, “has a reputation with most guys in this place, why do you think Matt was so into her back in the kitchen?”

My jaw fell open in complete and utter shock, “That’s because Matt was drunk!”

“Exactly,” Jessica answered.

Okay what? Firstly that didn’t make any sense and secondly, was Jessica really going to lie about me in front of my face? Oh I was so not going to take this from her, not now, not ever! I, Vivienne Lanter, am going to punch that blonde bimbo like the punching bag she deserved to be and then we’ll see who the one with the reputation would be. That would be still you Viv. Hello? Remember the last time you tried punching Jessica? You ended up showing everyone your pink underwear that was stained with punch!

“Look, I don’t really care about that,” Dave answered, “Viv and I was just about to dance, so if you excuse us.”

Dave stood up, turning his back to Jessica who was staring at him wide eyed as he stuck out his hand and helped me to my feet. Without looking back at Jessica, Dave led me towards the centre of the dance floor where most of the crowd was, moving accordingly to the music. Smiling at me, Dave came closer. Wait… He didn’t really think that we were going to dance? He does know that I can’t dance right?  I sucked badly at dancing that once when I tired I ended up breaking my leg and of course I never tried ever since.

Oh God! Dave better not really think that I was going to dance with-

“Mind if I interrupt?”

I turned around, only to stare up at Sean who was grinning slightly amused at me.

“Sorry if I’m stealing Lanter here, but she promised me that I’d be her first dance,” Sean said to Dave who looked slightly annoyed.

“As long as I get her straight after you,” Dave answered with a tight smile before walking towards the side of the room.

“He looks mad,” I spoke, “maybe I should go talk to him?”

“Rule number one in boys,” Sean began, taking my hand and leading me deeper into the crowd of bodies, “you don’t run after the guy, that’s his job.”

“Oh,” I replied, “but I really can’t dance.”

“Which is why I’m here Lanter,” Sean answered with a smirk, “I spotted you with that shocked expression you always have when I tell you that you’re about to get your photo taken.”

I glowered at Sean, “Because I’m never ready!”

“Well, you can’t say that you’re not ready for your first dance lesson?” Sean asked.

“I-I…well uh…” I stuttered.

The song that had just being playing ended, the lights getting darker as Sean came closer to me. I felt my breathing pick up, my heart rate soaring to the skies as I felt Sean’s warm breath fanning across my face. Okay Viv, this is dancing, not some porn movie that you found with Juliet in her neighbour’s room. Breath, stay calm, after all what can go wrong? With my luck, anything really…

The song began to play, its beat starting off slow. A gasp left my lips as I felt Sean’s arms, snaking their way around my waist, causing my cheeks to be set aflame with not embarrassment to be seen with him, but embarrassment from the fact that I probably was going to faint any moment and everyone around us would be able to see. With a deep breath, I dared to look up at Sean and noticed his eyes were reassuring, calming and just plain gorgeous.

“It’s okay Lanter,” Sean breathed out against my ear, “just let the music be your guide.”

I nodded like I understood him before squeaking like a frightened schoolgirl, “Aha.”

Sean let out a low chuckle, causing goose pimples to spread across my arms like fire, “You’re really easy to convince.”

“No,” I answered more steadily than before, “you’re just easy to fool.”

“Well look at that,” Sean answered, “Lanter’s got a fighting spirit.”

Before I could reply, the song’s beat changed from its soothing slow tone to a fast beat, causing Sean to spin me around and shriek at the same time. A few people turned to look, but before I could focus on their faces, Sean pulled me back into his chest, closer than we were standing before and much, much more intimate than I had planned.

“Move your body to the music Lanter,” Sean instructed.

“How,” I asked, my breath coming out as a whisper.

I really was out of shape.

Sean raised an eyebrow, “Follow my lead.”

I nodded, but suddenly stopped, my body going tense when I felt Sean’s hands’ moving down the sides of my waist, down my hips and towards my legs. My breathing became completely irregular, a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach began to form and I seriously felt out of breath. Sean didn’t really mean dirty dancing, did he!?

“Breathe Lanter,” Sean whispered into my ear, sending shivers down my spine, “and relax. I don’t plan on biting you,” he pulled away to look me straight in the eyes, “yet.”

I felt my cheeks heating up, “I-I…”

“Ssh, just dance,” Sean replied with a smile.

A genuine smile, not a smirk, not a grin but a pure and honest smile that I was receiving right this moment to dance. There was something calming and exciting at the same time about that smile, something that made my body move with the beat of the music and sway my hips in tune with Sean’s movements.

Sean grinned at me, “That’s it Lanter.”

He spun me around again, but instead of shrieking or even paying attention to the people around us, who were clearly staring wide eyed at the blonde girl in a super short gold dress dancing with a hot guy who occasionally wore combat boots and spoke with a slight British accent, I focused on Sean. Pulling me back, my back hit his chest and I could feel his heavy breathing against me. It sent tingles this time down my spine.

I began to turn around, but Sean stopped me, “Just go with it Lanter.”

I nodded before letting my body relax again. The music picked up its rhythm again and I let it take me to another world. A smile took over my lips as I began to move with the music, my hand running through my hair as I slowly went lower, dancing and feeling the exhilaration coursing through my veins.

“I thought you said you couldn’t dance?” Sean shouted from behind me.

I spun around, my hair flying with my moves as I grinned at him. I could blame the music or the fact that I hadn’t yet tripped, but the fact was, I felt braver than ever and dancing there in a room filled with teenagers from school with Sean in front of me really must have gotten to my head. I raised my eyebrows, letting my arms wrap around Sean’s neck as I leaned closer, my lips brushing his ear.

“I thought I was getting the hang of it,” I replied.

Sean’s hands slowly tightened around my waist before he answered huskily, “You are.”

I pulled away and stared at him, my face revealing a warm smile, “Really?”

Sean nodded, “Really.”

He leaned closer and I felt my breathing pick up, as his
