It was three in the morning, 3:04 am to be exact. I've woken up at the same time every night since we moved here. I walk over to my window and sit on the ottoman. It's raining like it has been for three days. The streetlights fall onto the sidewalk, looking as though they're melting onto the ground. Watching the rain fall down the window, racing, as they fall faster and faster. I see a woman in the shadows, I became curious of her. The next thing I know, she's gone. "That was strange, who would be up this late?" I said to myself.

I walk over to my desk, bombarded with piles upon piles of boxes to unpack and things to move around. I grab my journal off of one of the boxes and sit back down. Writing always helps me go back to sleep, no matter what I write I end up with a pen or pencil in my hand the next morning when I wake up. "Hmm, what to write this time." I wondered aloud. Flipping back a few pages I find an entry from before we moved.

"It's me again, journal. I thought I would tell you about what happened today. Today was the school's parent-teacher conference. Mom and Dad both had to come this time, it was torture. They haven't talked in months and they always say rude things about each other. My teacher brought up the topic of a family tree we're doing in class and mom flipped. Apparently, "you have to have a family for a family tree." I guess our family will never be good enough for her again. Although, I'm kind of excited, now that I'm old enough to make my own choice on who has custody over me, I get to stay with dad all the time! He said as soon as the divorce is final we can move! He got a job somewhere in Louisiana, called New Orleans. I've never heard of it but he said it's a great place to be around Halloween, and we have family up there I've never met before! He doesn't seem too excited about that but maybe I can learn more about my history, and why my name means death. Anyways, I think I'm finally tired enough to go to sleep, thanks journal!" -Muerte

It really is crazy to think about, I start a new entry. "My mom still hasn't reached out, though I don't expect her to. I get to enroll tomorrow at my new school. I really am excited but I'm also kind of upset. It's my senior year and I have to start a new school. I don't know, I understand why it's happening, I think that's why I'm so okay with it. I think I'm going to go to bed now, I have a feeling tomorrow will be a long day. - Muerte

Putting my journal up I take one last look out the window. "That woman was so weird. It's three in the morning and pouring outside." I said to myself as I got in bed. The next thing I know, it's the next day. As I walk down the stairs to make my breakfast I notice some writing on our whiteboard. It reads: "Have a fun first day, honey! I won't be home til late since it's my first day, too!" I love dad and his cute notes, it's so teenage girl of him. Grabbing the milk out of the fridge I hear a noise. I turn around to see what it was but nothing looks different. Finishing my shake I run out the door, "Already late, shoot." I thought.

My dad and I scoped out the area the day we got here, I've already learned where all of the school buildings are, and all of the "hangout" areas if you will. Pulling up to school was so weird, it was as though I'd been here before. Not just the scoping out, but in general. This place, this entire town seems familiar. The building looks old, run-down, and sad. I walk inside, trying to read the scratched-up signs and symbols explaining where to go. "You're Muerte, aren't you?" I turn around frightened by the fact that someone knows my name. "Yes, yes I am, and you are?" I look at the girl confused. She was really pretty, she was short, about 5'3, and had dark brown long hair. Her outfit reminded me of my outfit, statement-making. She wore a short skirt with black and white striped leggings and a black sports bra with a red laced shirt over it, tucked in. She had chains hanging from her skirt and her neck, and cross earrings. "woah." I thought to myself.

"Luz, Luz Nochedes to be exact. I'm going to be the one that shows you around, helps you get to all your classes, and be your friend if you can't make any." this girl did NOT just imply I can't make friends. "Welp, that's my queue to walk away." As I start turning to walk away she grabs my arm. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, it's my script. None of the kids are ever too happy about that part." Script? Why does she need a script? "Why do you have a script to show kids around the school you've gone to for what I assume is most of your life?" It wasn't too important, but it threw me off, enough. "I haven't gone here that long, actually, I've been here for about a month or so. Principal Xavier said that I would be a nice fit as your tour guide." "What the frick is that supposed to mean?" I thought but didn't put too much effort into it. "Okay, well I guess you get to give me the grand tour," I said as I handed her my schedule.

We started walking as she read it over, she explained to me how the schedule was timed and how lunch worked. "Since we're upperclassmen, we get off-campus lunch. I always go to my uncle's deli if you want to join me today." Luz said, handing me back my schedule. "Somehow we have every single class together, so I hope you don't hate me just yet-" She said stopping in the doorway of what I assumed was my first class. I got thrown into all the garbage classes since I joined so late. "Please tell me this is not our first class, those people all look like little kids." I pointed to the children I assumed were in late elementary, or early middle school. Kids were yelling and moaning across the room while other kids were wrestling and throwing paper airplanes. I'll admit if I were younger, these would be my kind of people, but now that I'm grown a bit more I'd be more likely to sit alone in a corner writing, like the girl I notice by the window. "Who's that?" I ask pointing to the girl, "Her name is Sarafine, she's one of the quieter kids, but she's cool whenever you sit down and try to understand her." Luz responds as we walk in.

"Okay wait, you still haven't explained why we're in a class full of children," I say as I follow her to a desk she sits down. "We are teachers' assistants for middle school history." She put her feet on the desk and made a loud noise doing so, the room went quiet and everyone looked at her. "You have five seconds to make this room as clean as it was when you walked in, or I'm telling Mr. D we aren't doing the Halloween lesson." As soon as those words left Luz's mouth the kids all rushed to clean up, throwing away paper airplanes and moving desks back to where they belonged. "Thank you, now sit in your seats and be quiet so we can begin when he gets here."

The teacher got here about five minutes later, he apologized to me and Luz as he sat down and started taking the role. Luz introduced me to him and he explained what I was to do and how this how worked. "Basically, since you finished most of your credits at your old school you're using TA Classes as something to fill your schedule." He stated. That's pretty badass considering I didn't have anything like that at my old school. "Today you can kind of just sit back and listen, I'm going over the history of our town and what we're known for pretty much," Luz said sitting beside me on the floor. She's been cool so far, but it hasn't been an hour so I'm still hesitant of her, or anyone else here to be honest. "What's so special about this town, anyways? Everywhere I turn so far I hear something about how special it is around this time of year. I went to go piss before we came here and the girls in the bathroom were flipping out." It doesn't surprise me to hear a school having team spirit but, they have no team whatsoever. I have seen nothing about any sports or anything. " You'll just have to sit through the lesson to find out, won't you?" Liz said as all the kids started gathering around.

Sarafine was still standing while everyone else sat down. "Do you want to sit by me? I promise I don't bite." I say gesturing to the open spot beside me. She nods her head and quietly comes to sit down. I stick out my hand to properly introduce myself. "My name is Muerte, what's yours?" To be fair, I already know her name, but if she's anything like I am you've gotta make her talk somehow. "My name's Sarafine, b-but my friends call me Sarah." She seemed like a sweet kid, something about her made me want to protect her at all costs. "Well Sarah, my friends call me Tay, and since we're friends I think that should be my name from now on." I watch her look up and smile, gosh I love kids. "Alright everyone, I need you to put on your listening ears to hear the tales of New Orleans, Louisiana." In unison, all of the children faked putting listening ears, I understood this on the count of we did it when we were younger. "Now I need all of you to close your eyes, and imagine the coolest thing in the world!" Kid's started yelling their answers out left and right, Flying Cars, Superman, Danny Devito! Wai- who the heck said Danny Devito?! I snicker at the remark and open my eyes, seeing Luz laugh too made me laugh more. "Are you guys laughing at my answer?" Sarah said as she opened her eyes and crossed her arms. "No sweety, we're not making fun of your answer, it was just... funny-" I continued to laugh my butt off as Luz told everyone to open their eyes.

"Alright, kids. Whatever you thought of, may it be inventions, superheroes, or Danny Devito, it was in fact not the coolest thing in the world. This story is. And this is where the story begins..."
