"Oh I hope you know that I love you even if I hate you sometimes
I don't put nobody above you even if I want to sometimes"

"Geez, get the hell off of me Jay." I groaned, trying to get rid of the Elephant currently laying on my chest. This dingus actually just had the nerve to interrupt my precious rare sleep. I took the pillow out from under my head and hit him over the head with it, though it wasn't nearly enough pain to inflict upon him for what he did.

"Oi! What was that for? Wake up! I tried everything, and you're fat self still wasn't getting up. What was I supposed to do?"

"Sure, you tried everything, everything but shaking me awake, right?" He smirked at my words, before jumping off of me relieving me of his football body's weight. Just as I thought I was free and was about to go back to cherish my three more minutes of sleep, I felt a bucket of ice cold water being spilled on my face, and Jayden's nervous laughter as he slipped out of my room.

"Ohh, YOU ARE SO DEAD, JAYDEN JAMES JACKSON!" I screamed before getting out of bed and running after that sucker. I ran all the way downstairs to find him hiding behind our mother. He thought he was so fast, but he was forgetting that I too was the quarterback of the football team for two years before I quit. I approached my mum, who looked very confused and concerned.

"Mum, he's gonna kill me." Jayden whimpered clutching on to her apron. I growled jumping forward causing him to let out a low shriek of terror.

"That's right, you little brat, you should be scared. The things I'm gonna to do to you." My mother's eyes met mine and she glared at me. Damn, if looks could kill I'd be dead on the floor.

"Okay, so I need both sides of the story before I decide who's team I'm gonna be on. Especially, considering we have an hour before you have to get ready, so we can squeeze in a small water balloon fight to sort this out." She moved away from Jayden to grab the water balloons, and I took my chance to lunge at Jayden who dodged my punch with a look of pure terror on his face. I was about to throw another punch when, I felt my ear being pulled back sharply,

"Ow, ow, ow. Mom." I groaned clutching at my now red ear. She smirked at me before answering,

"Why are you trying to kill your brother today, Kay?" I narrowed my eyes, crossed my arms, and glared at Jayden before starting my rant,

"Cuz this little piece of shit, decided to first jump on me, putting off his weight on me, and trust me he weighs way more than an Elephant. And then, oh mother, and then, the sucker decided to throw a whole bucket of ice cold water on me, I'm still soaking wet because of him!" I was now screaming, while she was dying of laughter.

"Oh my god. This is what you two fighting over? You're 16 for God's sake, find something else to fight over. Also, Kayden, honey, if you call your brother a piece of shit, I hope you know that means you're also one." She got out between her laughter, and when Jayden joined her, I couldn't help but laugh a little as well.

Especially, when five minutes later we were all outside having a full blown water balloon fight. I know what you're thinking, my mom's crazy, and she is. But she's crazy in an amazing way, she went through so much abuse with my dad to protect us and to make sure that we grew up in a good environment, that she forgot what it meant to actually be herself. She was an artist, she couldn't help it, she's the reason I started painting in the first place. When my dad left last year, everything changed, our entire world was shaken, all of us coping in our own way. That was at least until this summer, my mom decided to start art again, and we became IJK, Isabella, Jayden, and Kayden. That's why, if someone ever called me a momma's boy, I'd stand proudly up and say, "hell ya, I am."

The thing with her is, we never saw this side of her, until our dad was out of the picture. Then, it became ice cream for breakfast, and water balloon fights. Don't get me wrong, she keeps us disciplined but she also made sure that we knew how to have a little fun in life.

My dad wasn't the best, in fact, he's the last dad in the world, who I would give the best dad award to. He was never home, and when he was he'd always send us to our rooms, and never ever communicate with us until absolutely necessary. Finally, he just up and left, leaving my mom with two twin baby boys and rarely any money.

After that, my mom didn't have a steady income. She was now a full time working nurse, but it sometimes just wasn't enough to support three people. So I started working, helping her out despite her protests. I work at the car shop two blocks away, it was Lucas's dad's shop, and he was super nice about the whole thing. The thing was, no one in town really knew about my dad, or what even happened to him. We made up some bullshit story about how he left us and moved on with our lives.

Except, him doing this to us, really messed with my head. I started to think that maybe everything I was doing right now with the people I was surrounding myself with had to change. So I went into a freak state for about 4 months, dropping out of every sport, and only talking to Jayden. Then my mom had a strict talk with me about doing better in school and making friends. So, I was back, but I still wasn't healed.

Scars that someone you love leaves on you, will never stop hurting, it's just how life works. I still didn't participate in any sport, finding that I was doing better just focusing on something else I loved, something that didn't require that much human communication, art. Art became my outlet, the only thing that could bring me to a different world when I got tired of reality. The paintbrush in my hand made me feel in control of where I was going, where I wanted to go. And the blank canvas didn't take too much time before it was filled up. I drew oceans, I drew people, I drew everything.

But last night, I drew Valeria for the first time, but it was annoying me, I stayed up till 3 trying to perfect her eyes, before I realized I hadn't looked that deep into them to be able to draw them.

Feeling a splash of water suddenly on my face, I drew my attention back to reality, to see my mom, grinning at me from across the yard. I laughed before going to chase her with a water balloon in my hand, Jayden going to protect our mother.

I love these little moments, I live for them, when all of us are laughing with each other and just being carefree.

_____________________________________________________________________

That morning I walked into school for the first time in months, with a wide smile on my face. Jayden was by my side, and his punishment for this morning, was that I got to take the car home today, him getting a ride, after practice. I watched as his frown turned into a smile, when his eyes landed on Lilly who was currently chewing on a piece of gum, as she struggled to reach the top compartment of her locker.

Jayden and I both laughed before, sharing a glance, sneaking over behind her and grabbing each one of her legs, hoisting her up, and earning a loud screech from her. She looked down and her eyes softened when she saw us before they turned into a glare. She got her bottle of water and we set her down, her kicking both of us, upon being put back on the ground.

I left Lilly and Jay to go to the art room to collect my work from yesterday. On my way there, I saw Valeria and Maddie both drenched parting ways. I smiled and walked over to her, but my smile instantly dropped when I saw her face.

She had dark purple bruises cover almost every inch of her face, and a limp in her foot. The bags under her eyes were so deep it looked like she hadn't slept in days. Her hair was in a loose messy bun at the top of her head, which was a contrast to her usual ponytails, and her eyes, oh her usually bright lively green eyes, had been replaced with dull ones. She looked so pale and weak I couldn't help but gasp at the sight of her.

"Valeria? What happened?" I saw her look up at me and her eyes widen, she froze as if she didn't know what to say. I walked closer to her, and took her backpack, pulling it over my shoulder, before turning to her with expecting eyes.

"Umm, nothing. See I just fell down the stairs last night. No big deal. My face took the worst of it." She answered, wincing in pain, as she forced a laugh.

Bullshit. But I wasn't going to force her to tell me anything she didn't want to. I just needed to know if someone did that to her. If someone hurt her.

Before I could even ask the question, I felt her lean on to me, I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion, when her eyes closed, and she almost fell onto the ground. I caught her and gently laid her against the wall, panic starting to set into my stomach. No one was in the hallway, as the bell rang five minutes ago.

I took a deep breath and tried to shake her awake,

"Hey, Cupcake, wake up, come on, open your eyes. Hey, Valeria. You passed out on me, what's going on? C'mon V, open your eyes. " I tried multiple times trying to wake her up but my mind was frantic with the idea of her not being okay.

Taking another deep breath in a poor attempt to calm my racing hear, I picked her up, leaving her backpack on the ground there, and running with her in my arms towards the nurses office. I knew Nurse Patty, she was kind and understanding, often being the one to treat my sports injuries. As soon as I walked in and her eyes landed on me, she looked confused, once she saw Valeria though, she was all business, asking no questions and purely treating V.

Once I set Valeria on the bed, she ushered me out of the room, instructing me to wait in the office, or go back to class. She and I both knew I wasn't going anywhere, but leaving me alone in the office with nothing to do, was what got me thinking of possible ways this could've happened to Valeria.

Just the thought of someone hurting her had me shaking in anger, I'd only known her for a couple of months, but she was a good friend, and such an amazing person in general. I always had the suspicion that something was wrong in her life, but I didn't expect it to be this bad.

Who could do something like this to her?
