Amari

"It was the second best decision I've ever made..."

His words swirled around my head until I was dizzy and ready to vomit.

It's been six years.

Six years without him and he trots back into my life and inhabits my mind all over again with those dumb words.

I was happy without him.

I am happy without him.

Justin is the best thing to ever happen to me.

Why can't I remember that?

"You're not eating." Justin said staring at me.

"Huh?" I asked glancing down at the meal Justin had made for dinner. "Oh. Sorry. I just have a lot going on in my head right now."

"Thinking about me, are you?" He smiled. "What a freak?"

"Actually I'm thinking about work." I laughed. "Don't flatter yourself."

"You're always thinking about work." He said. "You're always working."

"I know..." I sighed.

"Take tomorrow off and hang out with me." He said leaning closer to me. "I'm a fun time, I promise."

"I want to..." I pouted. "But I can't. Tyler wants his hotel done by May 3rd and a lot goes into redoing an entire building."

"That sucks." Justin mumbled sitting back in his chair. "I really wanted to take you out Tomorrow. Some other day, I suppose."

"If my schedule ever opens up." I rolled my eyes. "We may have to wait until June."

"June? You're kidding." Justin said. "Why do you have to spend so much time on this while he gets to go home to his wife? Doesn't he know you have a life?"

"He knows." I nodded. "He just doesn't care."

Or doesn't want me to indulge in it.

Either way, his reasons were personal. I'm old enough to know that.

"Want me to talk to him?" Justin asked. "I'll beat him up for you."

After a second of thinking, I finally replied.

"No." I laughed. "Yeah, no. That's bad for business."

"Baby, I can cover up a murder like nobody's business." Justin shrugged. "Just let me know something."

"I really don't like you." I laughed.

"I love you with every ounce of my heart, though." He smiled grabbing my hand. "...And body."

I stared at him with a smirk fighting it's way onto my face and he leaned over to peck my lips.

"Now finish eating." He said. "I'm trying to binge whatever is on Netflix right now."

Tyler

"It's negative." Danielle said walking back into my home office.

She sat the pregnancy test on my desk and started tying her hair back.

"Maybe I should make an appointment with my doctor." She sighed sitting in my lap.

"Maybe..." I mumbled putting the test in the trash can.

"Why aren't you as upset about this as I am?" Danielle asked.

"Because I'm working." I said pulling the papers closer to me. "Can't be emotional when working."

"Well, stop working." She said taking the pen from my hand. "This is serious."

I stared at her with a blank expression and she mocked my facial expression.

"Fine." I sighed glancing at the clock. "15 minutes."

"Great." She said. "I thought I was in ovulation. Tyler, I don't want to wait any longer to start a family. I'll be 27 this year. I'm not waiting until I'm 30 to have a kid."

"And you don't have to." I said. "I'll make you an appointment first thing in the morning and we'll go together. Okay?"

"Okay." She said with a soft smile.

"Great." I kissed her cheek and turned back to my work.

"Do you think we could go out some time soon?" Danielle asked.

"Yeah. We can probably do dinner next week." I mumbled. "I'll have to check with Drew."

"No. I mean, we should go clubbing or something." She said. "Tonight."

"Tonight?" I asked. "I'm working, Danielle. Some other time."

"Fine." She sighed standing up. "Fine. But I'm going out. I'll be back late."

"Alright. Have fun." I mumbled.

Amari

"Hello?" I answered the phone tiredly.

"Hey! This is Danielle. Tyler's wife." Danielle spoke loudly on the other end of the phone. "What're you doing right now? Come out!"

"How did you get this number?" I yawned looking over at my alarm clock. "It's 2 in the morning. Where are you? Where's Tyler?"

"He's home and I'm living my best life!" She cheered into the phone. "Come out! The night is still young, girl!"

"Danielle, I don't have time for this." I said sitting up.

"Where are you going?" Justin asked tiredly waking up from his sleep.

"Come on, Amari. I just want to be friends." She said. "Come out!"

"I'm hanging up." I shook my head. "Call Tyler and tell him to come get you."

"He isn't answering. He's a deep sleeper." Danielle said. "Please."

I closed my eyes and sighed. Justin was watching me waiting for what I was going to do.

"Alright." I said getting out of bed. "Be ready. I'll be there in a hour."

I hung up on her and threw my phone onto the bed.

"Where are you going?" Justin asked.

"To get Danielle." I sighed. "She's drunk at a club and Tyler isn't answering her phone calls."

"Want me to go with you?" Justin asked standing up.

"No. I'll be fine. Just go back to sleep." I yawned. "You have training in the morning, anyway."

"Alright." He said reluctantly. "Don't do anything I wouldn't do."

"No promises." I said walking into the bathroom.

I brushed my teeth and washed my face before slipping on some jogging pants and a tank top and heading out to the car. I didn't bother with shoes, because I wasn't planning on getting out of my car.

When I got to the club Danielle was sitting outside half asleep. I honked the horn three times and she jumped up.

"Let's go!" I yelled out the open window and she ran over to the car.

When she was buckled in, I drove off.

"You came by yourself?" I asked.

"No..." She said softly. "My friends left two hours ago."

"And they left you there alone?" I asked. "You need to reconsider your friend choices."

"Are you taking me back to Tyler?" She asked tiredly.

"If you tell me the address I can." I said.

"No. Can you take me to a hotel or something?" I glanced at her then back to the road.

"Why?" I asked.

"I think he's mad at me." She said on the verge of tears.

Please don't cry. Please don't cry.

"I'm sure he's not." I mumbled.

"He is." She cried drunkenly. "This is the fourth time, Amari."

"That you've gone out and got drunk?" I asked. "That's justifiable anger."

"No. That's I've been unable to have his baby." She hiccuped. "I held the first baby for six weeks before I miscarried. The second baby for two weeks. The third baby for three days. This baby never even made it. Is there something wrong with me?"

"No." I said reaching over and grabbing her hand. "Maybe it just isn't your time."

"I'll be thirty soon." She cried. "I don't want to be dead before my baby turns three!"

"That's a bit dramatic..." I mumbled.

"Are you trying for kids yet?" She asked.

"Oh no." I shook my head quickly. "God no. Justin and I have very busy lives. He's always gone and I'm always working. A child isn't even being considered right now."

"Don't wait too long." She sniffled.

"I'm only 24. I have time." I shrugged.

I pulled up at my house and we both got out of the car.

"This is nice..." Danielle said nearly falling over.

"Thank you." I mumbled grabbing her hand. "Come on."

We walked into the house and saw Justin waiting by the door. He jumped up when he saw me, but his smile faltered when he saw Danielle.

"What's..." He started, but I shook my head.

"I'll explain later." I said. "For now... Come on Danielle. You can borrow some of my pajamas."

"You're so kind." She said as I pulled her upstairs.
