"You mean it was all the murderer's plan?"

We're at the back of the school brainstorming on ways to prove Amira's innocence. I told them of the message I received from the murderer last night.

"I guess... I mean how else do we explain the message?" I said, replying Caleb.

"We need to get Amira to talk," Sawyer said. "She's punishing herself for no reason."

"I don't think it's for no reason. He probably threatened her or something, Amira isn't a murderer." Lilia said.

I nodded. Amira doesn't look like she could kill, besides she doesn't know Eugenia and she isn't connected to me somehow so why would she do it.

"I could try and talk to her..." Lilia trailed off.

"I'll come with you," I said.

"No, no." She shook her head. "It's best if I go alone."

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah I mean if she wants to say anything she would feel comfortable telling only me." Lilia shrugged.

"She's right man," Caleb said.

I nodded. "It's cool but I can still drop you off right?"

"Yeah, I guess." She said half smiling.

"So should we go now, school is almost over," I suggested.

Kyle, I'm not cutting school." Lilia smirked.

"Even when it's last period?" Caleb asked raising an eyebrow.

Lilia smiled. "Still, the bell hasn't been rung."

Sawyer shook his head. "I can never understand you."

Lilia was about to say something when we heard the sound we've been waiting for.

BBBRRRIIINNNNGGG!!!

We all turned our heads to look at Lilia smirkingly.

"You wanted to say?" Sawyer said, his smirk forming a smile.

Lilia laughed. "C'mon let's go." She said, making her way to the parking lot while I followed her to drop my arm on her shoulder.

***

I'm parked in front of the police department giving Lilia reasons why I should follow her but she's unsurprisingly adamant.

"Kyle I said no, Amira won't be comfortable talking to me with you in there."

I sighed. "Fine. Just be calm, tell her we're here for her."

"Yeah. Thanks." She smiled leaning to peck me on the lips.

"See you!" That's what she said last before walking into the station.

Lilia POV

"Lilia!" Amira shouted and ran to me. I wish I could hug her but the bars holding the cell won't allow me. We could only hold hands through the space that separated the bars.

"Amira," I said softly. "I'm so sorry."

She nodded. "It's not your fault."

"I'm going to get you out of here soon, we're all working on it."

She smiled. "I know."

"I just wish you could tell me why you were there in the first place."

She tensed up. "You know I can't tell you that Lilia." She shook her head. "I can't."

"Why can't you? Do you like it here? You have to trust that I want to help you. We all want to help. Please tell me, Amira." I said squeezing her hand.

She shook her head again.

"Did they threaten you? They can't hurt you."

She pulled her hand off mine. "I don't know about that Lilia. I'm scared."

"Look Amira, you are safe, the police is involved, they can help too. Please just talk."

She breathed in trying to calm herself.

"I've been getting messages from an anonymous person."

"What kind of messages?"

She gulped.

"I know someone has been trying to hurt Kyle."

My eyes widened.

"But I didn't know they were going to kill Eugenia I swear!"

I relaxed. Phew!

"I got a text to meet up with this anonymous person, he or she, I don't know wanted to reveal himself and texted me the address, but I got there and didn't see anyone so I left."

I continued to stare, trying to process all she said.

"And I received another text that night saying 'Checkmate.' I didn't know what that meant but I guess I know now." She said gesturing to the cell she's in.

"Amira... You should have said something."

"I wanted to. Do you think I want to go to prison? But the text said if I tell anyone I'll be dead. I didn't really think they're capable of that but after Eugenia's death, I was scared to say something."

"I understand, it's not your fault."

"I don't want to die Lilia, I'm scared."

"You're not gonna die. I'm going to inform the sheriff about all you said. You are getting out of here today, okay?"

"Okay." She said smiling.

I smiled back. So Amira was just a pawn, the real person is trying frantically to hide. But who could it be? I don't know a lot of people and I don't think I've hurt anyone so bad to kill me. Kyle's life is at risk, mine, Sawyer's, Caleb's and Amira's, it is disturbing. Or could it be my dad? Naaa! I don't think so. He's in jail after all.

I walked up to the sheriff and told him all that Amira told me. He was shocked and understood why she was scared to say anything at first. But he said she has to say everything to him which will be recorded on tape and show him the text as evidence. But there's a problem now, Amira deleted all the texts. Shit!

"I'm sorry but I can't take your words for it, the judge would need evidence. A tangible one." The sheriff said.

"What?! She can't stay here any longer." I said.

"I'm sorry girls but there's nothing I can do."

"No, no there has to be something we can do. What about her phone company? Can't they retrieve it?" Amira said,

"I don't know, it was an unknown ID, I don't know if they can. And even if they can it might take time."

"How much time?" Amira asked through gritted teeth.

"Two or three days."

"We'll take it! It's better than nothing Amira."

Amira lowered her head clearly sad.

"Look, they are going to retrieve it and we'll find the murderer. Okay?" I said to Amira.

"I understand Lilia but I'm scared. I'm really scared. I told you guys about the threat and now the murderer will be out to get me."

"No that can't happen. You're safe here." The sheriff said assuring her.

Amira shook her head. "What if they poison my food or attack my family?"

The sheriff shook his head. "No! I won't let that happen. You & your family will be kept in protective custody till we find the murderer. Be rest assured you and your family are safe."

Amira let out a deep breath. "Okay. How long till we're kept in protective custody?"

"Two hours."

She nodded. "Thank you sheriff."

"My pleasure. And you..." He said pointing to me. "You should be careful as well as the rest of your friends. Bolt your door always. And as soon as you see anything suspicious, give us a call."

"Sure. Thanks." I said smiling.

Amira smiled back. I've missed that smile. Her face was pale and her eyes were puffy from crying. She hates it here. "Well, I have to be on my way now. I'll see you." I said as I began to stand up in an attempt to hug her.

"Thanks." She whispered in my ear embracing me. I closed my eyes and hugged her tightly.

Pulling away I waved and made my way out of the station. I rummaged through my bag to see if I have any cash left enough to board a bus when I saw Caleb's iPod in my bag. "Oh my god!" He's going to kill me. I borrowed it at lunch and promised to return it before I leave school and I totally forgot.

I pulled out my phone to call him

...Voicemail...

I sighed, running my fingers through my hair, he's going to be so pissed. He said he never goes anywhere without it and it's dear to him. I have to find a way to return it. Tomorrow will be too late. I'll go to his house... I have no choice.

***

Whoa! Caleb's house is a freaking mansion. Yahtzee! I knew he was rich but not this rich. I walked into the house...empty. I called his name severally but no one answered. Sighing loudly I made my way to his bedroom, "Caleb?" Nothing. I guess he isn't at home. I dropped the iPod and was about to make my way out when I tripped on something letting a board that wasn't visible at all fall.

Ugh! Stupid ball! I huffed and retreated to packing the papers and notes which fell from the board. I picked them up one by one until I stumbled upon a symbol on one of the papers. It was two bloody bones that crossed forming an X. It had 'brotherhood' written below it. Is Caleb in a gang or is he interested in one?

I shrugged and put it aside picking another paper which had my name, Kyle's, Amira and... Eugenia? Amira and Eugenia's name were crossed out with a red line...What's this?

I continued to stare at the paper and noticed photos of me and Kyle. Photos of Kyle's accident and... Caleb with a group of boys in bloody clothes?! Caleb is in a freaking gang or cult?! My breathing picked up and I could hear my heart beating through my chest. Has Caleb been behind this all along?

I looked and shuffled through the papers... It's Caleb! Caleb has been the one behind all these. He wrote it boldly, with his handwriting. Oh my god! I thought he was our friend, why? I don't get this.

I rummaged through my bag like a beast searching for my phone so I can call Kyle. He has to know, he deserves to know his best friend is behind all these. He killed Eugenia, he put Amira in prison. He is the reason for the texts and the threats.

I dialled Kyle's number shaking as my fingers pressed each digit. Ring, ring, ring, ring... "Kyle please pick up!" I said to myself looking back to check if anyone could hear or see me.

Kyle didn't answer the phone.

I tried his number again, my chest ached. Suddenly I felt a grip on my shoulder pulling me backwards that I was now lying flat on my back. I looked up and saw Caleb smirking at me "Bye-bye." That was the last thing I heard before everything went black...
