In the werewolf world mates can be sensed from infancy. And once found even in childhood they are cherished. The lucky ones experience all of their firsts with their soul mate. First crush, first date, first kiss and most importantly first shift. A first shift takes place out of necessity, in times of war children shift as early as age 8 so they may be able to defend themselves, or an orphaned child will shift immediately after the death of their parents no matter the age, but in times of peace a body will not be put through the rigors of a shift until the first full moon following the wolf's 17th birthday. Every wolf dreams of finding their soul mate and shifting for the first time together. To feel such a strong and loving presence is the only way to dampen the pain.
