It wasn't until his middle school decided to hold a "Quirk Day", where events where students could use their quirks, that it went wrong. Izuku was in a competition to see who could hit a far away target when it happened, he hit the target and hit excited, a little too excited and accidentally used his second most destructive power. He was quickly ostracized by everyone but his closest friends due to the damage and the fact he hurt a popular teacher.
