Materia was a wanderer, one who often crossed paths with Gandalf the Grey. On one such crossing, he invites her to help him on a quest, one he tells her little about save for the fact it would begin in a Hobbit hole within the Shire. As time goes on, she finds herself assisting two kings, one without a kingdom, one without a crown.
