I was sitting on the sofa in Pelumi's room, clothes were spilled all over the floor, shoes dropped carelessly and messily on the floor, the fan was rotating lazily and Adekunle Gold's Pick up blastered from the Bluetooth speaker her dad got her for Christmas last year.

Pelumi was lounging on her bed and stuffing akara into a loaf bread, and the sight of the food made my mouth water. "Why are you staring at my food like that?" My eyes slid to her face and on cue my stomach rumbles. "Stop staring at the food like that and come and eat jare"

"I'm fasting"

Pelumi gives me a look of disbelief but shrugs and proceed to devour her bread and akara sandwich with a steaming bowl of pap covered I milk. I settled to watching her eat her food since I couldn't join her because of my mother.

By my mother I mean the supposed dream that she claimed to have had and according to her over superstitious believe— which is found a lot in most Nigerians — it meant something bad, to her the evil ones were after our family so to nullify their plans, she declared we all fast until twelve o'clock then we will pray to God to scatter every plan of the enemy against our lives.

I don't blame her anyway, I definitely would've reacted almost in the exact same way if it were me since almost the larger population were ingrained with this kind of instinct. So basically all through the morning on our to church, during the sermon and on our way back home I kept zoning out to the thought of what I would possibly eat.

And ironically it felt like I was more prone to be aware of how hungry I was while fasting than on a normal day. It's probably the devil's attempt to taunt my effort, it will not work!.

"Girl, you missed!" Pelumi declares out of the blue, with the 'girl' sounding more like 'gurl'. I smile giving her a go ahead, her gist would definitely take my mind off my desire to eat.
"What happened?"

She launch into her story about everything, how she almost got lost on her way to Chris's house only pausing to exaggerate the size of their mansion and how fine the inside of the house was. I chuckle at how wide her eyes grew in amazement.

"Oh my God! Asira! You needed to see the party, it was hot!" She exclaimed and giggled

"There were people everywhere, Chris's cousin's friend, Timi has money eh. Well his parents has money since he is living off their money but whatever" She pauses to eat some pap "Sha anyways, there were different kind of drinks, I even got to try red wine and cream too, and there was a lot of dancing"

"I can't believe his parents let him throw a party like that" I said scoffing and shaking my head then Pelumi gives me this are- you-for-real look.

"Of course his parents won't let him throw that kind of party, which sane Nigerian parent would do that!" She said through a mouthful of bread "turns out his parents rented the house for him to stay in and go to school, it's because he doesn't like the University hostel"

"Hmm, okay o" but how come she knows all these things?

"Anyway I had fun Sha" then for a minute her eyes grow as wide as saucers "I almost forgot to tell you" she giggles "I stumbled into a bathroom when I wanted to go and pee and I found a girl giving a guy BJ right there!"

I gasp for a moment before giggling to the picture of someone giving a another person a blowjob, eww why would someone even want to suck another person's dick?. "It was lit Sha" she said and empties her bowl of pap "I even got a university boy's number, he said I looked really pretty"

I feel a pang of jealousy flood over my chest for a moment I wished I had agreed to tag along to the party.

"Will you call him?" I ask

"No nah, jeez no! I don't want to be the next person mouthing someone's penis o. My mouth is only meant for eating food not that abeg" she exaggerates and drops the tray the food was in on the bedside table.

I sigh and click the power button to my phone, 12:05pm. I tell Pelumi I'm going and exit her room and I'm out of her house.

When I entered my house, I spot Adura on the brown leather couch frowning and tapping furiously on her phone, probably typing a hate speech to an unsuspecting person.

I drop my phone on the arm chair and go over to the kitchen to grab a cup to drink water, the smell of egusi soup cooking waft into my nose welcoming me into the kitchen and my mouth water. I suspend taking the cup and move to peek at the soup bubbling in the pot.

"Ehen, Asira" my mother calls to me and I just hum a reply since I'm standing right next to her. "That boy that came to he restaurant, did you talk to him?" I freeze, I don't know why but I do, maybe because no sane teenage Nigerian girl can casually have a conversation about boys with their Nigerian mother but I wave off the feeling, after all she's asking about her employee and not a random boy I like, not that I like him or anything of that sort.

"Yes I did"

"I hope you questioned him very well o, I don't want anyhow anyhow person at my business place" my mother said stirring the soup "what did he say his name is?"

"Seun Mobolade" I busied myself with picking a cup from one of the cabinets up on the wall and rinsing it under the water running from the tap. "He seems so... Young" I hum to myself

"Did you say something?" Mum asked, she definitely heard me mumbling, she hated when I did that.

"No o, I didn't say anything"

"Nmbé koneni kor oka dö lobé nm nga ni (I have told you not to talk inside your mouth)" she says in Ogoni, our local dialect before huffing "stop chewing your words, I have told you! speak out" but I don't pay her any attention, I just leave the kitchen to get water for myself from the dispenser in the dining room.
