Finley’s P.O.V

I could feel my face burning as Eli smirked at me, a confident look upon his face. “I… um, I-I…”  I stammered, trying to find an excuse for the fact that I did not, in fact, correct him.

“Well?” Eli still had that stupid smirk on his face that made my heart flutter a bit, as he really only wore it when he was teasing me about me and him. “Why didn’t you?”

“I d-didn’t notice t-that he s-said t-that,” I stuttered, feeling my face grow even redder as I lied.

Eli opened his mouth, about to speak when Luke called, “Finley, come on, we’ve got to be home for dinner!”

I rolled my eyes at my idiotic brother, attempting to act annoyed but in reality I was praising both him and the Lord above for saving me from this awkward situation. “Coming!” I called. Quickly I gathered my things and almost ran out the door, leaving Eli behind.

“Took you long enough,” Luke reprimanded as I came to a halt next to him, panting from my brief run.

“Luke!” Allie scolded, hitting him on the elbow, as she couldn’t reach the back of his head. “Don’t make fun of your sister!”

“Sorry,” Luke mumbled, rubbing his elbow where she had hit it. “It’s just, ya know, I want to get home so my parents can meet you? And I’m kinda really nervous about it actually, and-”

As he talked, Allie’s eyes softened and she stood on her tiptoes and pressed a kiss to his cheek, almost hopping to reach it. Luke paused mid-sentence, a blush upon his face and his hand came up to touch the spot where she kissed him.

In that moment, I knew that Allie had Luke wrapped around her little finger. If she could get him to read and blush, the boy would do anything for her, and personally I thought that was adorable.

“Fin!” Eli yelled, jogging up to meet us. I turned to meet him, feeling slightly apprehensive. “You left your pencil case,” he explained, pushing the hair out of his eyes and handing it to me.

“Thanks,” I said bashfully, taking it and clutching it in my hands tightly.

Allie looked from me to Eli, a thoughtful smile on her face. Even though I literally just met her, I could tell that that thoughtful smile was the equivalent to Eli’s smirk.

“Why don’t you come with us?” she asked Eli. “Luke’s introducing me to his parents, Finley can too.”

I hated that I was right. I also hated that Eli agreed, and so did Luke.

“That’s a great idea, babe!” Luke said enthusiastically, smiling wickedly at me.

If looks could kill, Luke would have died about ten years ago. Right now, I kind of wished he had.

“That’s okay,” Eli said timidly. “I mean, unless Finley wants me to come?”

Well, shit, I thought. Now it’s on me.

Sighing, I said, “Yeah, Eli, come with us.”

At Eli’s smile, I really hated myself for being so nice. I really needed to take lessons on meanness from Luke. He would be a good teacher, as he always comes up with evil plans like this one.

“Well, everybody get it!” Luke exclaimed, opening the passenger door for Allie.

“Mate, can I just drive to your house with Finley?” Eli asked. “I have my car here.”

“Sure, man, just no funny business,” Luke warned, trotting around the front of his car and getting in next to Allie. “See you in twenty minutes!”

With that, my older brother drove away, leaving me with a boy who I liked, tutored, and was now introducing to my parents as my boyfriend.

“That went well,” I sighed.

“Yes it did!” Eli said triumphantly. At my disbelieving glance, he waved a piece of paper in my face. “I finished my homework!”

“Aren’t you special,” I grumbled, heading over to Eli’s car with him following.

“Why are you mad at me?” Eli whined, following me, taking the keys out of his pocket. “Is it because I teased you about being your boyfriend?”

I chuckled to myself as I sat in the passenger seat. “I’m not mad at you, I’m mad at my brother.”

“Oh,” Eli said, making him sound like he should have known that. “Why?”

“Because I have to introduce you to my parents,” I sighed.

Eli gasped, mocking offense. “As if that’s such a bad thing!”

I laughed. “No, but they’re going to think you’re my boyfriend, and you’re not.” I hoped to God my last words didn’t sound bitter to him and that he didn’t notice that my breath had quickened and my voice had risen in pitch towards the end of my sentence.

“Relax, Fin, don’t freak out, we can just tell them that you’re my tutor,” Eli soothed. “And that’s not a lie.”

“Right,” I sighed.

When Eli was sure that I wasn’t going to talk to him anymore, he started the car and drove off, heading towards my house. I wasn’t sure whether to be concerned or happy that I didn’t have to give him directions anymore.

Once we pulled up to the house, I knew that my mother was already trilling in her high-pitched voice about Allie’s cuteness, and I was already dreading this evening. If any teen knows anything, it’s that dinner with the parents is absolute hell.

“You ready for this?” I asked Eli, not realizing that we were standing side to side at the bottom of my driveway, as if readying ourselves for an ambush.

“Not really,” Eli smiled half-heartedly. “Parents and I don’t agree.”

“Why’s that?” I murmured.

“Lip ring,” he answered casually.

“I see,” I breathed. “Shall we?”

“We shall,” Eli said, letting me lead him up the driveway.

Opening the door loudly and interrupting my parent’s interrogation, I stopped over the threshold and my parent’s heads snapped to me.

“Oh, Finley, you’re home!” my mother exclaimed. “What are you wearing, jeans and an old sweater? Change into something nice, we have a guest over for dinner!”

“About that,” I mumbled, and stepped to the side to reveal Eli. “This is Eli Sanders; I’m tutoring him for math. Is it okay if he stays for dinner?”
