The day went by slowly for Angel. She noticed how her 21st century twin had caught the eye of her former acquaintance, which was something the blonde girl found beautifully amusing. She couldn't bring herself to care that Stefan had let her walk away, the men she ever felt a spark of emotion for always chose her twins. Eventually Angel halted the charade that someone would ever choose her over the mystical doppelgängers and wrapped barbed wire around her seemingly tattered heart, resulting in a façade of callousness and apathy. In all honesty, Angel was unsure of wether or not her cold persona was a mask of protection or her true self that was unlocked after the years of rejection, but she never dwelled on the topic of confusion for long. For some reason the perfected front brought a sense of pride and gratification to her. It was a masterpiece that was the conclusion from centuries of evolution. It was an exact example of survival instincts and knowing that caused a morbid sense of debauched joy to corrupt her being.

Angel sighed out of boredom and picked at the black paint that coated her nails. The information the teacher continued to preach came easy to the girl. Angel understood all of the information. The blonde had the potential to easily be a straight A student, but she just didn't care. School work was the last thing on her to-do list. She watched as Elena and Stefan threw googly eyes at each other, and she automatically knew that the Gilbert would soon be turned; love always came with a price. A pleasant feeling coursed through her at the thought of the future events. She liked her sister well enough, maybe even loved her, but she quit denying the feeling of exhaustion that came with breathing a long time ago. As long as Elena's heart stopped beating, Angel's immortality would weaken, and the opportunity of death would welcome her. What really caused a rush of giddiness to bubble in Angel was the fact that Elena could be the last Petrova doppelgänger and no doubt would be. As a result, the pointless recurrence of Angel's soul on the physical plain would be no more, and that thought gave her the delicious sensation of hope. No matter how sick and twisted Angel's desires sounded, they were nothing but the truth. Her darling twin would be happy with whomever she would chose to spend eternity with, and Angel would permanently be reunited with the solitude of death. It sounded perfect to her. Many might ponder what kind of monster would wish the fate of transformation or death upon another, much less a family member. Many would question the monster's love for that said relative, but, the fact was, Angel was uncaringly unaware of her feelings for her current family. She and her first twin, Amara, were as close as could be. They were always together, almost inseparable, then Silas came along. Angel fell for him, the first man she ever fell for, but her sister did as well. Since Angel was aware of Silas' engagement to Qetsiyah and her sister's feelings for him, she buried her own. She and Tatia were close as well, but their relationship quickly crumbled when Tatiana grew spiteful towards her due to their mutual interest in the Mikaelsons. Then there was Katerina, her third twin. Their bond was stronger than hers was with Amara, but then came the baby out of wedlock. Katerina was banished, and she followed, refusing to leave her twin. They bought a small cottage in the forest, but money was always a rare occurrence. Feeding the two of them was always a tricky task to accomplish, so one night her sister snuck out, believing that in doing so she was protecting Angel. Katerina returned a few years later a creature of the night, and with Angel holding youth until a deliberate death, the two lived their years together, eventually meeting the Salvatore brothers. And now there is Elena, who is blissfully unaware of the fact that her last name is not their true origin. By the fourth twin, Angel had learned her lesson. Having so many life times had taken its toll on the blonde girl. They all ended in betrayal and tragedy, so how would this relationship end any differently? She can't say that she doesn't care for Elena, she does, of course, but she can not honestly say she loves her; she had forgotten what it feels like to love, it's just easier for everyone this way.

After the school day ended, Angel hurried to her car, carefully avoiding Stefan and the rest of the high school population.  After making it to her Geo Prizm, she heaved a sigh and drove towards her spot of peace. The sight of the secluded cliff at the edge of the forest made her smile. She swung her long legs over the ledge and breathed in deeply. Digging through her bag, she pulled out a small, black container and popped the lid open then pulled out a joint that she had rolled earlier that day. After lighting the herbs and taking a deep drag, she smiled in content as she slowly exhaled, taking delight in the tranquility that consumed her. As she continued to bask in serenity, she noticed the rustling of the trees around her and was well aware of the man that stepped out of the shadows. With one brother came the other.

"Angel?" His voice was full of confusion and disbelief. She felt the emotion of guilt creep through his spine at the sight and mention of herself. A small, bitter part of herself was glad that he was guilty, but the bigger part of her was unconcerned about his emotions. Things were different than they used to be, she was no longer oblivious to the cruelty of reality.

"Damon Salvatore," she hummed, with a slight laugh, "It's about time you two showed up." She knew she was high, and she was not going to let his presence ruin the deliciously naughty rush she was currently experiencing.

"How are you alive," he murmured, with wide eyes.

She laughed loudly. "You brother asked the same thing!"

Shaking out of his trance and turning his eyes cold, he looked at her with an unreadable look. "Well, I see you haven't really changed."

"Then you must be blind."

A smirk of regret twists onto his lips. "I admit that I never saw you becoming self-destructive. What happened?"

She rolled her glazed eyes and put out the joint before turning her attention to him as a smile ghosted over her lips. "Don't act like you don't know." She frowned as she felt his guilt multiply. "Oh, don't worry," she laughed, "It was only a matter of time! That night was just the straw that broke the camel's back! I should probably be thanking you both." A small frown bled onto his face, as he gazed at the dazed girl before him.

"So you turned to drugs? Trying to find a way to numb the pain, huh."

She laughed again and faced the view of the forest. "Oh, Damon," she scolded lightly, "you of all people know that it's not about numbing it. It's about pushing it away." Damon's jaw slackened, and Angel was, once again, alone.
