Y/n was at her desk, beside Rosa's, and briefly looked up from her computer, as a loud ding filled the air, soon followed by the elevator's opening doors.

Unsurprisingly, it was Jake, coming in late, as always. Punctuality had never been his thing.

"Oh, look who's finally here..." she mocked him, looking down at her watch "...Only fifteen minutes late! That's impressive, Peralta"

The detective, already frustrated enough, rolled his eyes, and sat down at his desk, leaving his brown leather jacket on the backrest of his chair.

"So, what's your excuse, this time?" she smirked, getting up from her chair and walking towards his desk with her arms folded in front of her chest "...Your mommy didn't wake you up in time?"

"You know I live alone, y/l/n" he replied harshly, looking up at her, as he turned on his computer "...I just couldn't sleep yesterday, and didn't hear the alarm"

"That's really lame... I thought it would've been funnier" she teased him "...Like I fell into a sewer and got fucked by a giant fish kind of thing..."

"Ha ha, so funny..." he said sarcastically "I still wonder why you're a cop and not a stand-up comedian... oh, right, 'cause your jokes suck"

By now, the whole precinct was looking at them. Some people were just annoied by all that talking, but most of them just wanted to see how it was going to end.

Rosa was hoping in a fight, Amy in using her skills of conflict resolution (she had a brand new binder just for that), and Charles in a kiss.

He really shipped them.
Like, a lot.

It was starting to get exhausting, actually.

"Did your father teach you that insult?... oh right, he left you too soon, to get to that" she said, with a mischievous grin on her face.

Those words got under his skin, making all the repressed rage inside him spill out, as he snapped.

"Oh, you think you're so perfect? Because from what I can see, your life isn't that great either, y/l/n! ...Or should I say 'mama's least favourite'?"

Y/n gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. He shouldn't have said that.

She clenched her jaw, trying to keep the tears in, since she knew that everyone was looking at her now.

She didn't want to let them see her cry.
She didn't want their pity.

"Why did you say that?" she shakingly said, loud enough to let him hear her.

She couldn't help it, as a tear slipped out, falling on her cheek.

"Oh, and now you start crying?" he scoffed, still too upset to see what he had caused "You're not getting my pity, y/l/n"

She tightened her fist, and took a deep breath, trying to calm down.

Now, the captain was watching too.
He had walked out of his office, hearing all that arguing, and was about to intervene, when it happened.

"...You will never be her favourite" he whispered, grinning.

That's when she punched him in the face.

Holt angrily walked closer to the detectives, very disappointed in the both of them.

"Y/l/n! Peralta! That is enough!" he yelled.

Jake fell on the cold ground, groaning.
From his nose, a river of blood, painting his face of a deep red, as it flowed into his mouth.

He covered it with his hand, in pain, and looked up at her.

He could see pure hatred in her eyes, as she stared down at him, clenching her jaw, and realized he had said something he should have never said...

But before he could add anything else, she stormed out of the bullpen, avoiding all her colleagues, as she quickly entered the evidence room and slammed the door behind her.

The whole precinct remained silent, shocked.

"Peralta, in my office"

Y/n was crying, sitting on the floor in a corner of the room.

She was hidden from some boxes full of cocaine and other illegal stuff, and was still very upset from what had just happened.

She couldn't believe Jake had said that. He knew how much it hurt her, how it made her feel, and yet, it didn't stop him from doing so.

How could he do that to her?

She should've seen it coming, tho.
She too had used his father thing against him, and it wasn't fair.

Suddently, she heard the door open.

"...Y/n?"

She sighed of relief, recognizing Amy's voice.

"I'm here..."

Her friend walked closer, and softly smiled, seeing her.

She moved the boxes, and sat down beside her, sighing.

"...Jake feels terrible, for what he said. You should really talk to him..."

"I don't want to. And also, it's not his fault... at least, not entirely. I mean, I started the fight, I said that thing about his dad, I punched him... I should be apologizing"

Then it hit her.
She had punched Jake!

She hadn't thought a lot about it, but as she said it out loud, she realized how much she must've hurt him...

God, she felt so awful.

"Oh my God, is he ok?" she then said, turning around to look at her "Did it hurt?"

"I don't know, I came here as soon as I could... but I think it did, you hit him pretty hard" she softly said.

Y/n sighed, frustrated, and hid her face in her hands.

"I'm so terrible" she cried "...I get why mother prefers my sister now... she would've never done anything like this"

"Stop comparing yourself to her, y/n..." Amy said, getting closer to her.

She hated seeing her like that, because she knew there was nothing she could do to help her, and it was the worst feeling ever.

She hated being unable to make her feel better.

"Y/l/n, the captain wants to see you..." the sarge said, entering the room as well.

She sighed, and sniffed, tearing up.
"Thanks, Sarge"

She entered Holt's office, and saw Jake sitting in one of the chairs in front of him, with a pack of ice on his injured nose.

She looked down, ashamed.

"Y/l/n, have a seat" the man invited her.

His voice sounded neutral, as always, but she could tell he was very upset.

She sat down in the empty chair next to the other detective, and kept her eyes fixated on the floor, not wanting to meet his.

He gazed at her for a moment, and then back at the captain, making her feel even more guilty.

"I am very disappointed, in both of you" Holt said, sitting behind his desk "...You are my two best detectives, and yet you squabble like children! ...What happened?"

"Captain, I-

"It's my fault, sir" she interrupted him "...I started the argument, teasing Peralta, and it's just because of me, if it all happened"

"...No, sir... it's mine"

She turned around to look at him, confused.

Wasn't he angry? Pissed?
She had just punched him! Probably breaking his nose too! And yet, he took her defences...

"I shouldn't have said what I said, y/l/n has nothing to do with this. It's my fault, she had every right to punch me"

He softly looked up at her, and then back at the captain.

"Don't punish her, punish me"

Holt stared at the two detectives for a moment, and then sighed.

"...Well, I don't know who really is to blame, in all this, but it does not matter... you both get punished"

"What?!" they both said, in unison.

"There is no other way. Whoever truly started it, you both said things you should not have said, and I can not let Y/l/n go, after she hit a coworker, that would be very unprofessional and unethical."

He thinks about it for a moment, and then continues.

"You both get to stay here and finish all your paperwork, tonight after the end of your shift. Dismissed"
