MIA

Although my body felt at ease in Lorenzo's arms, I was still on edge. I didn't know this man and I had no idea where he was taking me.

He secured his large muscly arms around me, causing my heart to skip a beat, and I tried my best to keep my head down despite the fact that I could feel my pulse in my throat.

Lorenzo seemed to notice this, and a small smile tugged at the corner of his lips before it quickly disappeared, his eyes focusing back on my wrists. He muttered to himself angrily in Italian as he carried me towards a sleek dark grey car, and I frowned as I gazed at it.

Opening the passenger side door, he gently placed me inside, swiftly closing it behind me and getting in on the driver's side, starting the car up. As he backed up and revved the engine, pulling onto the road, he watched me twiddle with my thumbs in my lap, unsure of what to say or do.

"What's your name?" asked Lorenzo, pulling me out of my daydream.

"Mia," I replied quietly, watching him shift in his seat after hearing me speak, causing me to furrow my brows in confusion.

"Your age?"

"Um, twenty, I think," I spoke, trying my best to focus on the conversation rather than the burning sensation that was spreading down my arms, the silver making me feel drowsy.

Lorenzo nodded to himself, and I found myself wanting to ask him the same question, but I couldn't find the courage to allow the words to leave my mouth. I didn't know if he wanted me to talk.

"I'm twenty four," he slightly chuckled, obviously noticing me struggling, his brows furrowing once again as he looked me up and down. "We've had that human laboratory on our radar for a while now, but we didn't know what we were up against and how much they knew about our kind. We needed to make sure we could get everyone in and out alive."

I gazed at Lorenzo, his harsh features becoming more prominent as he tensed, taking a deep breath. "How long were you there for?"

"Um, about five years," I mumbled, noticing Lorenzo's hands turn white as he clutched onto the steering wheel so tightly that it groaned underneath him. It caused me to panic, worried that he would lose control of the car and we would crash.

"We're going to get you looked at as soon as we get home, va bene?"

I furrowed my brows at the word 'home'. My mind wandering to the whereabouts of my family, and what they were currently doing. After multiple years at the lab, I had blocked out the memories of them, realising that holding onto them was causing more pain than being alone.

However, I couldn't help but wonder if they had moved on and if they were happy without me.

Suddenly, the car pulled to a stop, and I hadn't realised that I had been daydreaming the majority of the car journey. Looking through the car windscreen, I noticed a gated area, with high fencing around it, guards standing at the entrance.

Lorenzo nodded at them, and they bowed their heads, opening up the gate, allowing us to drive straight through. As we turned the corner, a large white building came into view, with rows and rows of windows, multiple wolves being wheeled in on gurneys.

"We're here. Let's get you taken care of," soothed Lorenzo, stepping out of the car and opening my door for me, helping me out. His hand hovered around the small of my back in case I needed support, and I found myself breathing heavier than necessary feeling his skin against my own.

He murmured something to one of the guards at the door, who nodded and urgently made his way into the hospital, taking quick long strides as he walked.

As Lorenzo led me inside, I felt my hands start to clam up and my heart rate quickened, swiftly noticed by Lorenzo who ushered me into a room, closing the door behind us quietly.

"Just try to stay calm, darling," murmured Lorenzo as he offered me a smile. "Doctor Mac is coming."

The room was small, with lots of medical equipment stacked up on trolleys. There was a computer placed in the corner of the room, and a large hospital bench sat in the middle of the room.

"Alpha Lorenzo, I came as quickly as I could," sighed the Doctor, who beamed at me invitingly, pulling his glasses from his grey hair and placing them on the tip of his nose, making his way over to me.

"Please, Mia, take a seat," said Doctor Mac, waiting for me to back up onto the hospital bed, perching myself on the edge of it hesitantly, my entire body trembling.

"Look at her wrists," growled Lorenzo as he averted his eyes from me, breathing heavily, attempting to calm himself down. His arms were folded tightly across his muscular chest, and I took the time to trail my eyes down his tattooed forearms.

The Doctor hissed as he examined my wounds, shaking his head and turning to his Alpha. "She's too weak, so her wounds aren't healing. I'm going to need to stitch them up."

My head shot up at the word 'stitch' and I started to panic, fiddling with my fingers in my lap, gazing over at Lorenzo almost pleadingly, my bottom lip quivering.

"Right, Mia, I'm just going to numb the area with-"

At the sight of the needle, I shot off the bed, aiming for the door, but before I could reach it, Lorenzo wrapped his huge arms around my waist, lifting me up off the ground.

"No, Mia, it's fine!"

"No, please, don't!" I cried, struggling in his arms. I had been subjected to five years of torture, constantly having my blood taken and being injected with unknown substances. I couldn't do it again.

Lorenzo growled lowly in his chest in frustration, cupping my tear stained cheeks as he backed me up against the wall, forcing me to look into his glistening hazel eyes as he towered over me "Mia, it's fine. We have to do this, please."

"Please, don't," I cried, gazing into Lorenzo's eyes, causing him to sigh. He swallowed harshly, his teeth clamped together and his jaw tense.

For a second, I thought that he had given in, but he swore to himself under his breath, lifting me up in his arms and plopping me back down on the bed gently, ignoring my cries. "Just look at me, sweetheart. Just focus on me."

Lorenzo parted my legs, stepping in between them and stroking the side of my face, gazing into my eyes as he ushered for Doctor Mac to get to work.

"Good girl," whispered Lorenzo as he offered me a small smile, brushing my hair away from my streaky face, the tingles from his touch distracting me for a split second.

I studied his face as Doctor Mac began to stitch me up, focusing on his soft tanned skin and slight freckles dotted on his nose.

He had soft plump lips and straight pearly white teeth, and his eyebrows were full and thick, but nicely shaped. I stared into his eyes, blinking a few times to clear my vision, causing his to soften.

"Right, you're all done," announced the Doctor happily, clapping his hands together and setting down his tools.

"Buon lavoro, amore mio," said Lorenzo, flashing a smile at me before taking a step back, examining my freshly stitched wounds.

"I'd like to do a full body check on her if that's okay?" asked the Doctor, directing the question towards Lorenzo instead of myself, causing me to furrow my brows and scowl.

"Do whatever you need to do to make sure she's okay," he replied nodding his head, watching as the Doctor checked me over. He shone lights into my eyes, tested my reflexes and weighed me. It was quick which I was thankful for, but I still felt uncomfortable being in the room.

"She's obviously malnourished and will need plenty of rest, but she should make a full recovery. It's just more the mental side of her that I'm worried about," said the Doctor, causing me to raise my eyebrows at him, feeling frustrated he was talking about me as if I wasn't in the room.

"Well that's something we can discuss privately," mumbled Lorenzo, looking over to me quickly to see my displeased looking face.

"Of course Alpha." Doctor Mac nodded. "I'd like to see you again in a day or so to check up on you, Mia. Hopefully you'll be feeling much better and we can do some blood tests."

I watched as the Doctor excused himself, nodding at his Alpha before exiting the room, leaving Lorenzo and I alone both of us silent as we gazed at each other. My heart palpitated at the thought of having to deal with more needles, but I pushed the thought away.

That was a worry for another day.

"I'm sorry I had to put you through that Mia. I know you were scared, but I couldn't risk letting your wounds get infected when your immune system is this weak," Lorenzo said, his Italian accent becoming thicker towards the end of his sentence as guilt masked his face, causing my heart to ache.

I didn't like seeing Lorenzo upset, and it pained me that I was the source of it, confusing me. I barely knew this man, yet I felt like he was the only one who could offer me some form of comfort.
