LORENZO

"We are sorry, Lorenzo," sighed Lily, tapping her fingers anxiously against my office desk, an apprehensive Caspian sitting by her side.

"We knew you were on your way, so I guess we just let our guard down, but there's no excuse," added Caspian, straightening his back. "We apologise."

I pinched the bridge of my nose, shaking my head. After I had left Mia in bed last night, I had made my way downstairs, but found Lily and Caspian both far too incoherent to speak to, so decided to wait to speak to them until they were both sober.

By the time I had made my way back upstairs, Mia was already sound asleep and snoring away.

However, it was extremely hard to stay mad at my Beta and third in command. They were always so trustworthy and put the pack before anything else, but despite that, they were reckless last night, putting Mia in danger, which disappointed me immensely.

"Are we able to apologise to Mia?" asked Lily, biting down on her bottom lip.

"She's still asleep right now. I suspect she'll have the hangover from hell though, much like you two, so she needs as much of it as she can get," I replied, standing up from my desk chair and nodding towards the door, signalling that the meeting was over.

Watching Lily nod, pushing her chair out and make her way over to the door, I cleared my throat, causing her to turn to me, an eyebrow raised.

"I want to apologise for the way I spoke to you last night, Lily. I lost my temper with you, and it's not something I'm proud of." I gulped, an apology feeling strange coming from my lips, my often bitter and usual hostile self not accustomed to it.

Lily nodded once at me, offering me a small smile before exiting the room, Caspian closely behind her, his face looking solemn.

"Casp," I spoke quickly before he could escape, watching as his hungover stricken body faced me. I took a note of how dead he looked from the outside, his eyes holding little to no emotion.

"How are you doing, man? I've never seen you as drunk as you were last night. You've been drinking pretty heavily since...you know?"

Caspian clicked his tongue as I trailed off, running his hands down his face, groaning. "Honestly, I feel like death. Feeling hungover and focusing on how unwell I feel is better than focusing on how I feel without her."

I nodded in understanding, feeling guilty for bringing it up, knowing that my third in command had not been the same person since his mate had passed.

Seeing him struggle everyday hurt me, especially since I knew there wasn't much I could do to make it better. He was always going to need her and I was unsure myself how he continued on without her.

It made me more than terrified to lose Mia, just the mere thought of it enough to cause chills to wrack my body, as if the possibility was lingering above my head constantly, following me wherever I went.

"How's the therapy going?" I questioned, cocking my head to the side.

"I haven't been in a few weeks. I've been busy training the guards," he admitted, causing me to sigh.

"Caspian, next training session, just come and get me. Go to your therapy session and I can cover you. It's important for you."

After a few seconds of thought, my third in command nodded, offering me a smile, holding out his hand for a handshake, making me laugh.

"You're an idiot," I chuckled, eyeballing his out-stretched hand, taking it quickly and pulling Caspian into a hug. I patted his back a few times before pulling away, flashing him a small smile.

"Oh, and give the guards a good talking to about allowing Martina on the premises for me, will you?" I called after him as he left, shutting the door. I pulled on my glasses and settled down into my office chair, opening up my laptop.

I clicked on my most recent tab, the names 'Michael Miller' and 'Francesca Miller' having been searched multiple times, but the results only ever showing humans and their social media profiles who I knew just couldn't be Mia's parents.

I didn't want to admit to my mate that I didn't think we were going to find them.

I had made calls to the majority of packs I had connections with, and nobody had ever heard of them, but, I didn't want to give up. I was going to find her family, even if it took me years. She deserved at least that.

Suddenly, I heard a patter of footsteps from outside my door, and I furrowed my brows, quickly shutting my laptop once a quiet knock vibrated off of the large oak.

"Lorenzo," squeaked a panicked voice from the other side, my wolf feeling angsty as I pulled the door open, only to be met by my fragile looking mate who stood before me, still in her skimpy black bra and underwear.

"Mia," I growled, my eyes darting across the corridor, worried that someone had seen her so indecent. I took her wrist gently and ushered her into my office, quickly shutting the door behind us. "What are you doing up dressed like that?"

Mia gulped, covering herself up with her arms, looking extremely self conscious. "I felt like someone was watching me."

I sighed, wrapping my arms around her, bringing her to my chest, drawing soothing circles on her back. "It was probably just a dream. No one is going to hurt you. I promise."

"It all seems so real. I heard the voices again in my dreams. Someone kept asking me to help them over and over again. They were screaming," she admitted, causing me to raise an eyebrow.

If she remembered the voices she claimed to hear last night, what else did she remember?

"You're okay, I promise," I said, smoothing down her hair that was sticking up messily, framing her small and delicate face. "You might still be a little drunk."

"I feel so sick," she claimed, rubbing at her temples, closing her eyes.

Pressing a kiss to her forehead, I gently picked her up bridal style, causing her to yelp in surprise. "Come on, I'll get you some pain medication while you have a shower."

After checking that nobody was in the corridor, I quickly walked us back to my room, setting her down on the end of my bed. I entered the on-suite bathroom to turn on the shower for her, ensuring she had all of the necessary shampoos and body washes.

"Are you still taking your sleeping medication?" I questioned, helping her towards the shower, grabbing her a towel and placing it next to the sink for her.

"I don't think I did last night," she said, her face turning red suddenly as she gazed down at her attire, noticing my eyes trailing over her. "Why am I in just my underwear?"

My eyes widened suddenly, and panic set in that Mia might have thought that I had taken advantage of her, which more than disgusted me. "No, I did offer you a T-shirt to sleep in, but you didn't want it. I was-"

"Didn't we kiss? I remember that," she asked, dropping eye contact, looking embarrassed in fear that she had just imagined it.

I nodded, chuckling slightly. "Yes, we did, but I promise I didn't allow it to go and further."

"I remember-" she whispered, fiddling with her fingers. "I remember how much I wanted you."

My heart skipped a beat at Mia's words, my eyes instantly becoming dark and gloomy. My wolf was itching to be let out in order to take control, but I pushed him down, knowing now was definitely not the time for him to become dominant.

"I wanted you too, Mia. I really did. I still do," I admitted, gulping. "But I want you to be ready."

Mia nodded, looking self conscious, grabbing her toothbrush hesitantly, her soft brown eyes watching me for a few more seconds before focusing on herself in the mirror. A frown masked her face as she gazed at her appearance.

"I'll let you get yourself sorted," I said, pulling the bathroom cabinet open and grabbing a packet of pain killers, emptying two onto the counter for her. I offered her a small smile, exiting the room and making my way down the stairs.

"Hey, Lorenzo," said Natasha cheerily, pulling down the streamers from the wall, shoving them into a trash bag, gazing around the messy looking room in distaste.

"Hey, Natasha. Did you have a good night?" I asked, grabbing a few crumpled up beer cans off of the floor and passing them to her.

"It was...eventful," she laughed, shaking her head, pushing her glasses up on her nose, her hair pulled into a messy bun at the back of her head.

"It was great!" came a voice from beside me, and I noticed a small blonde round the corner, her glittery party makeup smeared all over her face, making her look like a clown.

"Ellie, you look...," I muttered, shaking my head.

She gasped, gazing up at me, her eyes wide and doe-like. "Alpha Lorenzo! I didn't realise it was you!"

"Are you here to help Natasha clean up?" I questioned, wondering if she had ended up staying the night with Lily and Natasha. It didn't look as if she had gone home.

"Well, Lily said she would help too but the Moon Goddess only knows where she's disappeared to," mumbled Natasha, causing Ellie to laugh.

I made my way towards the kitchen, opening up the fridge, taking out some ingredients to make my mate some breakfast, attempting to ignore Ellie's and Natasha's constant giggles.

"So, did you see anyone you liked last night?" Natasha asked, scrambling across the floor, grabbing all of the paper cups that had been trampled on.

"Oh yeah, I met a few nice people. Nobody I liked if that's what you mean. Your friend Mia was nice though," Ellie replied, the mention of my mate causing my ears to perk up. However, I remained facing the counter, cutting up the vegetables, but listening intently.

"Mia is lovely," agreed Natasha, clearing her throat subtly.

I could feel her eyes burning the back of my head, silently begging for confirmation on how much she could say and I sighed heavily, turning. I noticed how curiously Ellie was watching me, a brow raised, waiting for me to say something.

"Yes?" I questioned her, coming across rude and blunt, but knowing full well the question that was on the tip of her tongue, disliking how blatant she was being about it.

"I...um...I didn't say anything," she replied, dropping eye contact with me.

"I already know what you're thinking, but keep it quiet for now. Mia doesn't need the stress," I stated, not waiting for her reply, turning back to my cooking.

"Yes, Alpha Lorenzo."

The girls remained quiet for the rest of the duration of my cooking and once I was done, I plated up Mia's cheese and vegetable omelette, grabbing some cutlery and making my way up the stairs, rounding the corridor.

"Mia?" I said, knocking on my bedroom door, waiting for her reply.

"You can come in," she said quietly, causing me to sigh lovingly as I walked in, gazing at her soaking wet hair framing her face. Her body was dressed in a pair of baby blue jogging bottoms and an oversized black sweatshirt. She looked beautiful.

"Those clothes Lily picked for you look good on you," I said, setting down her plate of food on the bedside table, noticing how her mouth started to salivate, her eyes looking ravenous.

I passed the plate to her, watching her dig in instantly, smiling at me as I switched on the television, flipping between channels. But, I suddenly stopped once I heard the clatter of the cutlery hitting the plate next to me.

I turned to see Mia staring off into space, her eyes wide and clouded over, her omelette all over her lap, hands shaking.

"Mia?" I said, panic stricken, moving so I was knelt in front of her, my hands finding their way to her face, attempting to gain her attention. However, she was in some sort of trance, looking right through me as if I wasn't even there.

"Mia, look at me," I said loudly, tilting her chin up, gazing into her foggy eyes. "Mia, can you hear me?"

Suddenly, my mate inhaled loudly, her vision becoming present again, quickly darting around the room, her bottom lip quivering.

"Hey, hey, you're okay," I said, attempting to soothe her, my voice wavering slightly at the end, filled with fear for my mate. "What is it? What happened?"

Mia gulped, taking in a few deep breaths, her brows knitting together. "It's my Mother."
