Khadijah

I swung my legs over the bed as I stood up to stretch. Looking at the clock I sighed as I read that it was going on ten o'clock in the morning, and I had an appointment at eleven.

It's been a week since my blowouts with Monique and Trey, but it's felt like a month.

I pulled my phone out to text Trey the address and time for the appointment before putting it on the charger.

I went to the bathroom and started my morning routine, and thirty minutes later I was dressed and ready to go. I checked my phone as I locked up the house, seeing if I got a response from Trey, but there was none.

I sighed and got in my car, pulling off towards the doctor's office, which was only a fifteen minute drive from my house.

Once I got there, I signed in and sat in the waiting room, waiting for my name to be called to head to the back to see Dr. Chan.

Every time someone entered the office, I looked up in hopes that it would be Trey, but it never was. I got up and stepped to the side in a secluded area and tried to call him. When I dialed his number it went straight to voicemail, no ring, no nothing.

So I decided to call Korie and see if he was there since I'd heard he's been at his house since he left last week.

"Hello?"

"Yeah, Korie, is Trey around?"

"Nope, he ain't been here in two days. Why what's up?" I heard him shifting around on the phone.

"Well I'm at the doctor's for a check up on the baby, he told me he'd be around for appointments but I guess that was a lie."

"Well where is it, I'll come up there with you."

"Nah, don't worry about it I'm good. Ever since me and Mo stopped talking I haven't heard from you, you haven't called or came to visit."

"Look I'm not trynna be in the middle of what any of y'all got goin' on."

"You're my brother, so since when did checking on me, calling, or visiting put you in the middle of anything?"

The line grew quiet and I could tell he didn't know what to say next, or how to answer the question.

"Khadijah Watts?" A nurse peeked out the door leading to the back.

"I gotta go." I hung up the phone and made my way over to the nurse with a warm smile.

"Hello Ms. Watts, how are you today?"

"I'm fine, just ready to meet my baby already."

"Oh I know the feeling, I have three girls and each pregnancy was the same. I was anxious and nervous all at once. But just enjoy it because it's a whole new world when they're born." She opened the door for me and told me to have a seat. "Dr. Chan will be right with you sweetie."

"Thank you." She nodded and closed the door.

I looked around the room, reading over the posters on the wall obtaining information about pregnancy. I rubbed my belly thinking about being a mom, and something about motherhood had me feeling all types of emotions. I prayed that I'd be a great mother and I prayed that I could provide and be there for my child through everything. No matter what happens I want my child to always confide in me and know that I'm here.

"Good morning Khadijah!" Dr. Chan walked in and smiled.

"Good morning, you're in a good mood today." I giggled.

"When am I not?"

"You're right."

He logged into his computer and typed a few things in before pulling out a folder and turning towards me.

"So how is everything going? How are you?" He looked at me over his glasses.

I thought about it for a moment, should I give the typical, oh I'm doing well, answer. Or should I be truthful.

"Honestly, I haven't been doing good. It's just a lot. Too much actually, and I slowly feel myself slipping into depression." I told him truthfully.

"Oh that's not good. Where's Trey? Is something going on?" A look of concern came across his face.

If it was any other doctor, I'd tell them it was none of their business about my relationship, but Dr. Chan has been the best doctor ever since I've found out that I was pregnant. He calls and checks on me and he even speaks with Trey about little things he can do to make the pregnancy smoother.

"We're not really seeing eye to eye right now, and we're kind of on a break I guess. And then me and my best friend got into it so we're not speaking at the moment either. I just feel alone, and I don't like it. They all say I'm a crybaby or I'm too sensitive and emotional but that's all I've ever done was cry because of the type of life I've lived and what I've been through."

He nodded his head and dug into his pocket pulling out his wallet. He opened the wallet and pulled out a piece of paper and held it out for me to take.

"That's my wife's number, she's a therapist, and she's pretty amazing if I do say so myself. I want you to give her a call and set up something because I can tell there's some things you just need to get out and cope with."

I thanked him and stared at the paper before putting it inside of my purse. I didn't know if I'd be using it, but it was a good gesture.

He pulled out a pen and grabbed a paper from my folder.

"Alright, lets get down to business. Have you noticed any weight gain since the last check up?"

"I gained six pounds actually, is that normal?"

He chuckled and wrote something on the paper. "Very normal, a woman of your size, which is average weight, should gain twenty-five to thirty-five pounds during pregnancy."

"Okay, that's a relief." I held my hand over my chest.

"Have you been eating healthy foods for the baby?"

"If bean burritos and Oreos count then sure." I gave an embarrassed look.

"We need to be eating a lot of green vegetables, we need to be drinking a lot of water, and we also need to do some light exercising." He wrote more on the paper. "I'll give you a list of things that are good for you and a list of exercise routines, sounds good?"

"Great." I nodded.

"Okay, lets get you up on the table and get some gel on your belly, so we can see the baby and check on how the little one is growing in there."

I got up and sat my purse and jacket in the chair. I climbed up the mini steps to the bed before swinging my legs over and laying down, lifting up my shirt.

"Oh this is cold." I gasped as he squeezed the gel onto my stomach.

"Alright," he rolled the probe around my stomach looking up at the screen, "hmm."

"What? Is everything okay?" I began to get nervous.

"Give me a second." He got up and walked out of the room and for a second I began to panic.

After a few moments he came back in with the nurse who brought me back here. They looked at the screen and the nurse began smiling. "Yup." She nodded her head.

"What's going on? Can I know something please!"

"You wanna know the gender, or would you like dad to be here?" Dr. Chan asked.

I thought about it for a second, and I could've been petty and said he should've been here, but I won't do him like that.

"No, I think I'll wait." I said kind of bummed.

"You sure?" The nurse teased.

"As tempting as it is, I think I'll just wait so we can both be surprised." I said trying to convince myself more than her.

"Okaaay." She smiled as she left out the room.

"Baby is looking good, and healthy. Just make sure we're drinking that water and eating those vegetables, okay?"

"Yeah I got it." I chuckled.

He wiped my stomach off and helped me off of the table. I gathered my things and put my jacket on.

"Here's that list of things you should be eating, and things you should be staying away from. On the back is some exercises I want you to do. I'll see you when you hit your fifth month, which is next month, and I hope to see both you and dad." He looked over his glasses.

"Okay, thank you Dr. Chan." I began walking out the room.

"Oh and hey, make use of that number. It'll do you some good." He pointed at me.

"Will do."

I left out the office and jumped in my car, and pulled out the number to Dr. Chan's wife. I was about to dial it but decided against it and just headed home.

Trinity

I had been sitting on my couch studying for the last three hours, and I was beginning to get a head ache. I had an online exam coming up in two weeks and it was a must that I passed it.

My phone buzzed on my leg, and looking down I saw that it was an incoming call from Reem, so I let it ring.

A few minutes later my phone buzzed again indicating that I had received a text message.

Reem
I'm not side nigga material. -7:41 p.m.

I laughed thinking back to last week when I told him I wasn't side bitch material.

Me
I'm studying, lol. And you can't be a side nigga if I don't have a main nigga πŸ˜‰ -7:42 p.m.

Reem
Let's go out and see if we can change that. -7:43 p.m.

Me
Such a bad influence, I'm trying to learn!! -7:43 p.m.

Reem
And I'm tryin' to learn about you, come on I been tryin' for a week, I think I deserve a date. -7:44 p.m.

I looked at the time noticing it was almost eight o'clock. He has done a great job at being consistent and he's a great listener, so I figured I'd go ahead and give him a chance to take me out.

Me
What time should I be ready ReemπŸ™„ -7:47 p.m.

Reem
9 o'clock love, see you soon 😘 -7:48 p.m.

I sent him my address and locked my phone as I laughed at how eager he was. I was liking the attention he'd been giving me and how sweet and caring he was, but with everything that's been going on, you could never be too sure.

I texted Mo and told her I was going out with Reem, and to keep track of my location every now and then. She replied with a simple okay, before she sent another text that said, you go girl, making me shake my head at her foolishness.

I walked to my room and placed my phone on the charger on top of my nightstand before going in the bathroom to start my shower.

Twenty minutes was all I needed, and I was out and getting oiled up. I went to my closet to figure out what'd I be wearing, and decided on my leather snake skin skirt with the matching jacket and my black leather spaghetti strap shirt, along with my snake skin open toe heels that spiraled up my legs.

I went to the bathroom and did a natural beat on my face. I lightly sprayed my hair with warm water and brushed it out, making my curls pop, and finished the look with some laid edges.

I grabbed a black panty and bra set from my drawer and slipped them on, before getting dressed. I looked in the mirror and decided I wanted to wear a necklace, so I put on my silver cross necklace that my brother got me for my birthday last year.

I went in the bathroom and applied some nude lip gloss to my lips, and when I was done it was eight fifty-six.

Right at nine o'clock Reem called and said he was outside, so I locked up the house and walked out.

He was standing outside of the car on the passenger side leaning against the door.

"You look beautiful." He hugged me and opened the door for me to slide in.

He walked to his side, hopped in and started the car.

"Thank you, you don't look too bad yourself." I nudged him as he smiled but kept his eyes on the road. "You're not gonna put your seatbelt on?"

"Nah ma, I think I'm good." He smiled showing a dimple I've never noticed until now.

I stared at the side of his face taking in his appearance, and to say he looked good was an understatement. His chocolate skin made my mouth water, and the way his hair was freshly cut showing off his deep waves had me on edge.

I guess he thought I was staring at him because he didn't have his seatbelt on, so he huffed and pulled it across his slim frame and buckled it up.

"Happy now."

"Ecstatic." I giggled. "So, where are you taking me?"

"Well I figured since you just recently turned twenty-one, you haven't got to taste any good wine yet." He looked over at me and quickly back to the road. "So we're going wine tasting."

"That sounds nice, and don't act like you're just way older than me." I laughed and lightly slapped his shoulder.

"I'm twenty-two , you're twenty-one. That makes me older." He boasted.

"Whatever. I wouldn't have thought about going wine tasting but I'm pretty excited. I thought a guy like you would take me to like, the gun range or something." I teased.

"Haha very funny," he laughed sarcastically, "I would only take a girl to a gun range that I wasn't that interested in." He winked.

"I'm sure you say that to every girl."

"No that was my first time using that one, how was the delivery? Did it work?"

My mouth dropped as he laughed and I folded my arms trying to be upset but I couldn't, I joined in laughter with him.

"This one is nasty." I scrunched my face up and sat the glass back down.

"Yeah I don't like this one either, it's too sour." He laughed and sat his glass next to mine.

We had been tasting wine for about an hour now, and it's been so fun. Even though there were a lot of people here, it's like we had the place to ourselves because everyone was spaced out around the room, and in their own privacy.

"This one is pretty, it's so pink." I smiled and held the glass up swirling the wine around before taking a sip. "And it's good! What's this one called?"

"Armand de Brignac Ace of Spades Brut Rose." The coordinator answered.

"Sounds expensive." I took another sip.

"It runs for about ten grand a pop." I nearly spit my wine out.

"T-ten grand? As in ten thousand?" Reem laughed at me as he finished off his sample.

"I think you a little tipsy, you ready for our next destination?"

"Oooh a two in one date? Where to?" I smiled.

"The movies."

"Shut up, I've been trying to go to the movies for forever. I haven't been in years! I'm excited, let's go!" I hopped down from my stool and grabbed his hand.

We made it to the car and he opened the door for me before walking to his side to get in.

The ride to the movies was filled with low music and small laughter as we glanced at each other every now and then.

"You did jump once!" I pointed my finger in his face.

"Man, no I didn't. I told you I sneezed." I laughed at his lies.

We were leaving out of the movies and to say I was enjoying myself was an understatement. We saw the new Nightmare on Elm Street movie and it was super scary.

"Yeah sure."

"I know you ain't talking! Hold my hand! I'm scared!" He mocked. "You grabbed my arm and squeezed it so tight I thought I was about to lose my circulation.

"Whatever! You are so dramatic." He laughed as we walked.

"You ready to go home or you wanna walk this strip for a minute?" He looked down at me.

"We can walk." I smiled.

"Your feet not hurting in them things?" He looked down at my heels.

"No I'm used to it, they're actually comfortable."

It was quiet as we walked and looked at all the people laughing and talking that passed us. The night air was fresh and crisp sending a chill down my spine.

"So how long is your sister staying?" I broke the peaceful silence.

"Uhh, I don't really know. She has some issues back in Atlanta with her dude, so she said she needed a get away." He shrugged.

"Are you guys close."

"In age or?"

"Both."

"Well, she's twenty so I'm two years older than her, but as far as our relationship goes she's like my best friend. I'd do anything for her." I smiled listening to him talk about her. "We don't have the same mom, but we got the same dad. But my mom may as well be her biological mother because she's always taken care of her. My dad had Solai out of wedlock, and that was a rough time in my parents relationship. When I was younger part of me wanted to hate her but I couldn't bring myself to it because it wasn't her fault. Eventually my mom and dad got back together but Solai's mom tried to put my dad on child support. She just wanted the money for herself, she was a very bad person and she even tried to kill Solai one time. So my mom made my dad fight for her to come live with us permanently and ever since she was four she's been with us."

"That's sad, but good at the same time." I had felt his mood change, so I grabbed his hand and looked up into his eyes.

"What about you? Any siblings?"

"Yes I have an older brother, same mom and dad but we don't have our parents in our lives." I left it at that not wanting to go in detail about it.

"I ain't mean to get you upset." He spoke softly pulling me closer.

"I'm not upset at all, I'm actually glad you care." I bumped him with my shoulder.

"You want any kids?"

"I-I don't know." I looked down. "I had a miscarriage when I was 16." I let go of his hand and folded my arms looking away, not wanting to see his reaction.

After a few moments of silence he pulled me back into him and wrapped his arm around me.

"You don't have to be embarrassed or shy when it comes to telling me anything, everybody has different walks of life so I ain't judging. I've had my fair share of wrongs and mistakes but I get over them, and the only thing to do is move forward."

"You're so sweet Reem."

"I try." He dusted his shoulder and smirked.

"Do you mind taking my picture really quick?"

"I got a sister and I know really quick means keep taking them until you finally see one you like." He chuckled.

"Well at least you know." I handed him my phone and stood off to the side posing.

He took about six pictures until I finally really liked one.

I looked and analyzed the photo until I decided it was worthy enough to be added to the gram.

We walked and talked for a few more minutes before it was time to go, I was worn out and ready to hit the bed.

Pulling up to my house I laid my head back and pretended I was asleep.

"Nah, you ain't sleep get up and get in that house." Reem poked my side making me jump up laughing.

"Okay."

He got out the car and walked around to my side letting me out.

"I had an amazing time tonight." I blushed and kissed his cheek.

"Amazing enough to call me big daddy Reem?" He smiled.

"Boy bye." I laughed and walked to my door. "Text me when you make it home."

He stood outside the car waiting until I unlocked the door and stepped in. I waved letting him know I was good, and watched him pull off.
