Aden
April and I pull apart. I quickly look away feeling my face heat. For a second it felt like something was about to happen. With her soft hand on my face and her eyes on me like that it I just want to lean into her.

April was making me feel things I shouldn't feel. I said that I was okay with being her friend but she was really making it hard.

Then again, she was the one look and touching me like that. Maybe it meant something. Maybe I was reading into too much. This is apart of the reason why avoided dating in highschool it was all so confusing.

I try to pay attention and class but for the first time I'm finding it hard to focus. I keep glancing over at April. She looks so good today. I'm not sure what she did but it look good.

April glances over at me and smiles. My heart skips a beat. It's so strange, I didn't even know what it was when it happened.

Fvck, April, what are  you doing to me.

"Mr. Harris what do you think?" The teacher said looking over at me.

My eyes go wide. I've missed the last part of the  discussion.

"I, um, agree?" I say trying to be vague enough to answer whatever his question was.

"With what Mr. Harris segregation?" Mr. McCat said looking at me like I'm crazy.

Sh!t I walked myself into that one.

"No! I, uh, I..." I start to trail off. I can here other student whispering behind me. Now they're going to hate me now.

"I think Aden was saying he agrees with their right to fight and protest against establishments that discriminate against people based solely on the color of the skin." April said stepping in for me.

Mr. McCat turned to look at me. "Is that true Mr. Harris?"

"Yes sir, I mean deep down were all the same. The only difference is that privileges and opportunity are provided to one group over the other. The reason school segregated was because they were afraid that if African American children were able to learn at the same speed as whites then they would have to admit that they were just as good." I say.

Mr. McCat nodded. "Very well said Mr. Harris but maybe next time pay attention and Ms. Robinson won't have to swoop in to save you."

"Yes sir."

The rest of the class is pretty uneventful. The bell rings and both April and I stand up to leave.

"We still on for lunch?" April asked.

"Totally."

"Alright well I'll see you in bio."

April waved at me before leaving out of the class. I head out of the class room. I'm walking when someone grabs my arm and pulls me around the corner. Thinking it might be Jamal I ball up my fist ready to fight.

To my surprise it's Regina holding my arm. Her hand reaches up to touch my face but I flinch back.  She frowns.

"Did those fvckers do this to you?" Regina asked.

"Yeah but it's not a big deal."

"Not a big deal? Not a big deal?! They're always doing sh!t like this. They think that just because they're popular they can do whatever they want and get away with it."

I place my hands on her shoulders trying to calm her down. She seems really upset.

"Regina, it's okay." I say.

"No it's not. None of it is. They can't just treat us like we're trash to be used and abused and toss us to the side like we're nothing. We're not nothing."

"Regina?" I asked. There were tears forming in her eyes. One escapes and roles down her cheek.

Regina quickly wiped it away. "Fvck, I'm fine. I just... I just fvcking hate those guys." She crosses her arms and leans back against the wall. She seems more like herself now.

"Yeah they can be pretty sh!ty." I agree.

"Are you still hanging out with the princess?"

"April's a good person. I know you don't like her but once you get to know her you'll see that she's a really nice girl."

"Whatever, are you guys eating with us today?"

"Actually April and I have plans."

"Oh,okay I see." Regina scoffed before pushing off of the wall.

I frown. "What's that suppose to mean?"

"Oh I don't know, Aden. The girls brothers beat you half to death and you still want to follow her around."

"You can't blame her for that, she didn't do any of this."

"Right because she's the pure princess who heaven forbid you say anything against her. She's the one we have to protect at all cost. Well you know what Aden the rest of the world may pretend to like her but I sure as hell won't."

I stare at Regina. The amount of bitterness in her voice is both shocking and uncalled for. I like Regina but I'm not going to just stand by and let her talk about April like that.

"You're wrong Regina. April isn't nice just to get people to like she nice because that's who she is. I don't know if you're jealous or-"

"You think I'm jealous of her?" Regina exclaimed cutting me off. "Her? You know what fvck it. You want to go on your date with the princess then I'm not going to stop you."

Regina turned around and started to walk away. "Just don't come crying to me when she picks them over you."

I shake my head. I don't know what's going on with Regina but she's wrong about April.

I continue with the rest of the my day. Biology roles around and I see April again. She walks into the room and my mood instantly brightens. She really does look nice today.

April sits next to me and smiles. I don't need any proof to know what Regina said was wrong. I know April.

Ms. Carter is about to start the class when the door suddenly burst open. Keith is standing in the door way breathing like he's been running.

"Mr. Robinson, what do you think you're-" Ms. Carter starts but Keith marches right pass her. He stops in front of April grabbing her hand.

"April we have to go." Keith says.

"Go? Go where?" April asked looking just as confused as everyone else.

"Jamal's in the hospital. They got him April."

I watch as April's face turns from confusion to fear. Both her and Keith race out of the class room. She doesn't even both picking up her stuff. I watch as they both disappear behind the closed door.
