Maria decided the day was lovely and we should eat our brunch outside. We laid out in her garden by a large fountain and got to know each other. I liked Chris and Jesse. They made me laugh so hard at times, tears came out of my eyes.

I took notice that Maria was head over heels for Jesse and hung onto every word he said. I know I had just met her, but this was the quietest she had been in the last 24 hours. I looked over at Robert; he was also quiet. He had been texting the entire time, a small crease dented his forehead from frowning at his phone. Suddenly he got up and left. Maria and Chris gave each other a look.

"So, Lia," Chris turned to me, "what grade are you starting?"

"I'm going to be a junior, what about you?"

"Same; I hope we get some classes together." He winked.

"Why, so you can copy off her work?" Jesse teased. "Don't let him copy off you, Lia. Make him do his own work."

"Dude," Chris jokingly whispered, "Why do you have to ruin my plans?" He turned to me.

"Anyways, Lia, we could study together. I am a great study partner."

"Lia, the only thing he's good at studying is anatomy," Jesse teased.

"Bruh, does bro code mean anything to you?" He said, smacking him with a lawn chair pillow.

I laughed. Maria rolled her eyes. "It doesn't seem like it, but he is smart despite acting like an idiot," she said, referring to Chris.

"Anyways, Lia, we should get started on planning our routine."

At that moment, Robert came back with a curvy blonde at his side.

"Hi Abby," Maria said.

Abby waved at her, she looked annoyed, and Robert didn't look too pleased either. She noticed me and squinted her eyes. Wait. Did she just roll her eyes at me? Figures, the snob would have an equally snobby girlfriend. Like attracts like, right?

"We're going to go upstairs; I'll talk to you guys later," Robert said, leading her up the stairs.

Chris rolled his eyes when they left.

"Can they ever just be normal?"

Maria looked at me embarrassed, "Abigail is the daughter of some family friends. Her family has stake in my families company so our grandparents and her parents have been really pushing for her and Robbie to date since forever. She can be nice, kind of a snob, mostly she's just harmless... mostly."

"They always fight," Chris added, "It's annoying, and she doesn't like me, Jessie, and Lana because we aren't 'old' money."

Maria made a tight-lipped smile, "As I said, she can be a snob. But my family has been shoving her down Robbie's throat for years now. I usually just pretend she doesn't exist."

"It's easy for you to ignore her, Mar— you aren't in her grade and have to deal with her and her groupies every day. She's nice to you because she wants your brother," Chris said.

"You've hooked up with half those groupies," she said in response.

"Oh, they aren't dating?" I asked and then regretted it; I don't know why I was so nosy; it was none of my business.

Chris scoffed, "No. She wishes— that's why she's in a bad mood all the time."

"Pretty much," Maria said embarrassed, "I feel bad for her, to be honest, but she knows who she is dealing with. I feel more sympathy for my brother. On Robbie's end, she's a family friend, so he can't really ignore her and cut her off completely as usual. She's at every holiday party, reunion, etc. It's complicated and awkward. She keeps hoping he'll ask her to be exclusive, and he doesn't."

"Maria is just nice; she is a huge bitch." Jessie said matter of factly, "She's an ass to my sister and pretty much anyone who doesn't fit her agenda."

"Aaaanyways, we should work on our schedule," Maria said, changing the subject.I nodded. She got up from her chair and stretched, "we can do it in my room. Do you boys want to come up? We're just going to work on track schedules, but you can chill."

"Sure," Jessie said and got up.

I started picking up all of our empty food containers. "Lia, what are you doing?" Maria laughed.

"Helping you pick up," I answered, confused. "Honey, don't worry about it. One of the maids will get it."

"Oh," I said, putting down what I had picked up.

"You're cute, Lia," Chris said, tapping my nose with his finger as he walked past me.

Upstairs, Maria's room was beautiful. She had a queen bed with what I was sure were silk sheets and something that I'm pretty sure is called a chaise. Her room had its own en-suite bathroom and her ceiling had beautiful intricate molding. I always had to share my room and bathroom with my siblings and grandmother. I couldn't imagine having space the size of my Dad's apartment all to myself.

"You can lie down on the bed, just take your socks off since we were outside," She said, dropping her bag on her chair. I nodded, and Maria went to get some paper from her desk. Jessie and Chris made themselves at home on some lounge chairs and started playing video games.

Suddenly we heard a thump.

Jessie let out an awkward laugh, "here we go."

The thump was followed by more thumps and a loud female moan.

"Uhhg gross," Maria said covering her ears and kicking close the door to her room.

It didn't do much; we could still hear them.

"Yes, daddy, harder."

I blushed, and Jesse snickered "that's new," He said laughing.

"She's giving her top performance today," Chris said, winking at me.

"I am so sorry, Lia," Maria said, her cheeks a bit pink.

"It's okay," I said, kind of annoyed, "we just need to concentrate."

I mostly wanted to bolt out of there. Sex didn't exactly make me uncomfortable, but after that car ride and now this. I mean, what was wrong with this guy? I was so done. Still, Maria was so nice, and I could tell she was embarrassed. I didn't want to make her feel bad.

We worked for thirty minutes, and they were still going. Sometimes the thumps and moans got quieter, and I thought they were finishing only to hear them ramp up again.

"Jesus, how long do they do this for?" I asked, frustrated.

We were trying to work our plan into the plan Coach had created. It was a difficult task made more difficult by the porno going on nearby.

"Usually not this long," Maria answered.

She added: "and usually not this loud.

"I think Abigail was a bit put off by seeing you and want to make sure you know what's 'hers'." She did air quotes when she said hers.

"She has absolutely nothing to worry about. I am not interested and I'm pretty sure it's mutual. Plus, Abigail is gorgeous."

"It doesn't matter. She's really insecure, and seeing a random pretty girl at her house within 50 feet of Robbie gets her in a mood. Also, Robbie left his phone this morning when he went to pick you up. She called, and I might have answered and told her what he was doing...oops."

She sounded sincere and innocent, but her smile said otherwise.

"You sneak," Chris threw a throw pillow at her. "acting like mother Theresa downstairs when Jessie and I were ragging on her, you can't stand her just the same."

"Now, boys," Maria said, "That is not true, but I will remind you that while Lana is your cousin Chris,  she's my best friend," she said shrugging, "anyways, Lia, let's finish our schedules. I'm bored with all this Abigail talk."

We finished around three, and then I told Maria I needed to be getting home.

"I'll drive you," she said.

Chris and Jessie stayed behind; they had fallen asleep on her lounge chairs, and she felt bad to wake them up.

"Before we go, let me make sure my mom ate her lunch. She's been in a mood this week." Maria said as we padded out of her room being careful not to wake up the boys.

I followed her down the hall and up another staircase that led to what looked like a small sitting room with large double doors.

"Come, Lia," Maria said, opening the doors.

I hesitated for a moment after the conversation with Robert. I didn't know what to expect, then shook my head and followed her past the double doors into the room.

Her mom was beautiful. She looked like Maria but with gray hairs and laugh lines. She sat on the bed, talking to someone in a maid uniform as if they were old friends. The only thing strange was that all the curtains were drawn, and the lights were dim.

"Hey, mama," Maria said, coming in.

"Hello darling, I just woke up."

I could see Maria look at the maid carefully as if to ask for permission.

The maid nodded affirmatively and winked warmly at her.

"We're having a good day today, right, Ms. Bennet?" The maid said rubbing her employers arm.

"Yes, yes. That nasty headache is almost gone," Maria's mother answered patting her maids hand.

How's everything, my sweet?" She said, and moved to make space on the bed so Maria could sit.

"Good mama, training with a friend today," She said, looking at me.

Her mom turned and gave me a warm smile, "Hi. I don't think I've met you? But my head is so lost these days."

"No. We haven't met; I'm Cecilia," I said, introducing myself. I spoke to her in Spanish. I noticed she had an accent, and it was something I naturally did without thinking. For whatever reason, I always felt rude to talk to someone in English when I knew it was not their first language. I was not sure if it was done for their comfort or mine. I walked up and greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. Then said hello to her maid.

"Oh, she's so cute," She said, turning to Maria.

"She's small, but she smokes everyone on the team," Maria said, smiling.

I had never felt short before, and I'm pretty sure I was not. I guess in a family of insanely tall people, I look like a little gnat.

"Have you eaten, Mama?" Maria asked.

"Not yet. Darla was going to make me brunch. Would you like to join us, Cecilia?"

"Oh, no. I have to head home. My dad gets home soon, and I haven't even started dinner," I said, suddenly nervous.

"You can take some food home," She said, smiling.

"Oh, no. My dad is very picky. He will only eat Cuban food. Rice, beans, chicken, pork. Thank you so much for the offer; I really can't, though."

"That sounds delicious; I love Cuban food. There used to be a restaurant nearby, and they closed it. I was so sad. We'll do a raincheck then," She said, squeezing my hand.

"I would love that," I said and said my goodbyes to her and Darla.

Later, on the way home to my apartment, Maria told me she thought her mom really liked me.

"She never invites any of my friends to lunch. She probably thought you had kind eyes. My mother is astute in that way. She can always tell when people are trustworthy."

I blushed, not knowing what to say.

"For example, Abigail she barely acknowledges," She said

"What happened between Lana and Abigail?"

I asked, curiosity getting the best of me. Maria looked over at me.

"It's not that complicated. Both Lana and Abigail were in love with this boy Damien in 9th grade. This boy is delicious. I usually do not pay attention to younger men, but I think anyone would make an exception for him.

Anyways, Abigail is pretty much the most popular girl in her grade and stakes her claim on him. Lana doesn't care what anyone says and decided to go after him.

To make a short story shorter- Abby found out when Lana and Damien were hooking up in the locker rooms after school. She took a video and posted it everywhere with the word 'slut' in large red letters. She then manipulated the coaches to kick Lana off cheerleading, dance, and the homecoming committee."

"That is pretty shitty of her."

"Yeah, well, that's Abigail. I mean, it doesn't matter. Lana's family owns one of the US's biggest tech companies, and her uncle is a producer, so it's not like her future is ruined. Still not cool."

"Yeah, poor Lana."

"Eh, don't pity her either; she's still dating Damien, in their weird open relationship. They're super in love. So, I don't think she cares that much. Jessie and Chris are really overprotective. I think they care more. Especially Jessie. Seeing his sister posted naked all-over social media was not fun for him."

She gave me a devilish smile. "She looked amazing, though. I think if anything Abigail inadvertently elevated Lana's status as the hottest girl in school." She chuckled. "I really can't wait for her to meet you."

I nodded. After a few moments of silence, I blurted out:

"Chris seems nice."

Maria smiled knowingly, "Oh, you think Chris is cute, huh?"

I blushed.

We spend the rest of the car ride singing loudly to songs on the radio and laughing at Robbie's and Abigail's performance.
