Callum's POV:

My eyes slowly open.

My skin is damp and the side of my face is pushed hard into the glass window of the passenger door. I wince as I try to move. A loud groan echoes around me as the car tilts, dropping a little lower from wherever it has landed. My head bounces from the window and I grip the dash, steadying myself.

The roof of the car has caved, almost crushing us. My fingers feel stiff as I fumble for the door. I manage to get it open, slightly. I suck in a sharp breath and begin to wiggle through the small gap. It takes a long time as I try not to move too much.

I gulp in the fresh air once I'm out and the rough ground digs into my palms. My arm. I look down at it. It's loosely dangling underneath me, unable to weight bear. I'm positive it's broken.

Collapsing, I roll onto my back and stare up at the sky. It's morning now. Maybe it is even past morning. The pain is everywhere. Hot. Intense. Harsh.

My eyes want to close. Everything inside me is begging for rest. Somehow, I push myself to my feet. I sway and fall back down. I stand again. I survey the car. It's a warped mess of metal.

Staggering to the other side of the car, I see Rhett.

I wipe the blood and sweat from my face and almost scream at the pain the ignites in my arm.

One end of the car is crushed into the ground, the other resting on a large rock. The windows are shattered, bits of glass littering the ground around me.

Squatting, I look to Rhett. Dry blood is sitting underneath his nose and has oozed from his ears.

I have no idea how I can get him out of this car, with the roof caved in like that. I try to pry open the door, but it doesn't budge.

"Rhett," I croak.

I touch his shoulder. He doesn't stir.

I walk back to my side of the car and stare at the gap. I'm amazed I fit through that.

Even on this angle, the door won't open any wider. Brushing away some of the glass fragments, I reach inside and try to feel Rhett's pockets, searching for a phone. I can't get through.

A wave of exhaustion knocks me off my feet.

The heat. The pain. It's unbearable.

I curl into a ball, pressing my face into my knees, feeling a helpless sob rip from my throat.

Darkness fills my vision once more and this time, I welcome it.
